SEMRush stock has been on a consistent decline all year, even with it's pivot to AI and enterprise, and it's a damning tale... One that I am considering shorting 😅

Wall Street once loved SEMRush! It was a nimble SaaS riding the SEO boom while big tech focused on their ad monopolies... Fast forward to 2025 and the stock is down over 50% in six months, guidance was slashed, and is now an injured unicorn simmering on the edge of a sub-billion dollar valuation.

This is all because of a handful of factors:
- There core SMB and freelancer base, the lifeblood of SEMRush’s early growth, is bleeding out, and that's an industry wide problem.
- The enterprise pivot? Still too early, too expensive, and not compelling enough. Large marketing teams already sit inside Adobe, Salesforce, or HubSpot ecosystems...
- They bloated out the platform with too many mediocre tools, becoming a jack of all trades, master of none.


Meanwhile, the macro reality for search is brutal:
CTR from organic is collapsing as Google continues rolling out AI Overviews, AI Mode and pushing zero click experiences whilst publicly saying they will actually increase clicks somehow.

Even if SEMRush builds the best tools in the world, they’re chasing a shrinking TAM. And the market’s noticed. 

CAC is rising, LTV is dropping, and EPS just flipped negative (-$0.04 when investors expected positive).

Unless SEMRush can reinvent itself as a data infrastructure layer powering next gen marketing agents, not just another SEO SaaS, this decline isn’t cyclical, it’s existential.

AI hasn’t just disrupted search. It’s rewritten the entire value chain of how marketing intelligence is created, analyzed, and acted on.

And if SEMRush can’t evolve faster than the algorithms it once measured… Then this chart might not be a dip, it might be a preview. 📉

I wrote a blog post 3 days ago, and it's already ranking #3 and has influenced the Google AI Overviews for the target exact match keyword ("link sculpting").

This is the new SEO game:
- Publish once with highly optimized content on niche domain → influence not just the SERP, but the AI snapshot EVERY USER will see.
- Links still run the show, but content that engineers AI Overviews = Disproportionate visibility, especially around purchase journey queries.
- You don’t just fight 10 blue links anymore, you fight Google’s own AI-generated answer box...

And if I wanted to really scale this up and takeover, I'd use my base (90% human written) article, rewrite with 90% AI versions and post on free and paid parasites until I control the consensus! 

This keyword isn't that high value (400 MS) but imagine applying the same system to 10,000 MS+ commercial terms in finance, SaaS or iGaming!

That’s when you stop “ranking articles” and start controlling narratives. If you’re not building content to seed AIs, you’re already behind, and the future is going to slap everyone in the face real soon...

Google is officially cooked!!! 👿 

Government, hospital, even children’s charity websites turned into casino affiliate farms, and Google’s ranking them top... Or the algo actually does it's job and tanks them, then they just get 301'd into another aged domain 🙄 

Google’s link spam systems? Dead...
Its manual review queue? Fossilized...
It's most recent algo updates? Paper tigers...

And it is even easier than it was 10 years ago, and way more profitable! Old backlinks, clean history, and a 301 chain later… boom, “Canada’s #1 Casino Bonus Site” 🤣 

And at least last year you needed an authority site! Now you don’t even need a parasite anymore.... Just pick up a £12 GoDaddy auction domain that used to belong to a charity, slap on a new theme, 301 in a burnt casino shell, and you're printing money 🤑

This isn’t hacking. It’s not even very clever. It’s lazy, old school SEO tactics with great timing, and Google loves it because it's funneling all it's resources into AI, and letting search get blasted with spam.

Some of the biggest players aren’t even building links right now. They’re just buying forgotten brands and laundering traffic through expired trust and equity signals...

Welcome to the modern competitive SERPs:
- DR60 domains that used to be hospitals, now promoting crypto roulette
- Gambling sites hiding behind .org redirects
- And 200k/mo from pages Google could detect 3 years ago, but now ranks like mad!

Black Hat is booming! White hat is coping! And Google? 

They're off trying to let AI magically fix all of this, even though it'll simultaneously kill their cash cow! At this point, SEOs aren’t gaming the system, we’re just the only ones still playing...

Spammers are turning charity, trademarked business, government and even children themed domains into casino sites, and Google is rewarding them with premium rankings. This is abusive and unethical to say the least. When is Google going to act? Some of the worst offenders:

elitechrysler.com - an automotive site hijacked to promote Canadian casinos.

safecanada.ca. - a government government help site for national emergencies and natural disasters now turned into promoting unregulated Canadian casinos

wavecomp.ai - a computing and ai company website now promoting casino bonus offers

peopletree.eu - an environmental support site turned into promoting UK casinos

languagecoursesuk.co.uk - a language educational site turned into promoting illegal UK casinos

arabellareeve.co.uk - Someone’s personal catering business hijacked to promote illegal UK casinos

cliftonpark.org.uk - a museum for children now promoting illegal UK casinos

elaris.eu - a German electric car company website now promoting illegal German casinos

wizardexploratorium.io - a children’s wizard and magic site now promoting illegal uk casinos

redkangaroo.co.uk - a children’s trampolining site now showcasing casinos

vso.org.uk - a voluntary services overseas charity website turned into an illegal UK gambling website

yeovilhospital.co.uk - a hospital turned illegal casino site

nsbcpa.org - The National Society of Black Certified Public Accountants now promoting illegal Italian casinos

This music news blog created a dedicated gambling category and took over US casino SERPs in under 45 days...

"Relevancy" is becoming more and more of a joke with this weak algo, and AI Overviews are poorly filtering the top 100 sources - With more and more spammy sources taking over.

Parasite SEO isn’t just surviving, it’s thriving! Google nuked subfolders, “cleaned up” casino SERPs, and yet the same cycle repeats again and again: Authority shells recycle, spammers flood in, and churn and burn parasites dominate.

The August spam update didn’t kill parasites; it just reshuffled who gets paid this month. Orphan pages got torched, but buy a few extra posts from the ones that saw a boost and you’re right back in business. 

Google can’t hit the root authority, so the recycling theory holds: Smash one host, and another instantly fills the SERP gap, on a never ending loop.

Meanwhile, AI Overviews are letting low quality, mismatched sources bleed through. The classifier barely applies to new domains, and with content signals dead, links + authority + freshness + traffic carry the entire weight... That’s why random blogs can tack on a “casino” subfolder and outrank decade-old iGaming affiliates! 🤣

The SERPs are trash, and whilst some will complain about it, I will always say that’s your opportunity...

There is no difference between white hat, black hat and spam in SEO anymore... The algorithm is a mess, it's weak, and that forces your hand.

Almost ALL of the most competitive niches in our industry are now ruled by parasite SEO, or the agencies and corporate groups that Google have allowed to grow so rich they acquire their way to the top thru the same algorithmic mechanisms anyway.

And anything you can make a quick buck off, consistently. These aren't your average churn and burn affiliates anymore, in some cases, these are publicly traded companies battling each other in the SERPs for  supremacy with teams of people behind them, by any means necessary.

This war isn’t fought with "best practices" anymore. It’s fought with leverage! Leverage of platforms, leverage of authority, leverage of loopholes. The lines between parasite SEO, algorithmic exploitation, and corporate dominance are gone.

The SERPs aren’t fair game, they’re rigged arenas where either you buy your way in (acquisitions, PR/link budgets, UGC flooding etc), or you hack your way in (parasites, redirects, churn and burn, spam, AI at scale).

The weak cry about "Google killing SEO" and are desperately trying to pivot to GEO/AEO/ASSEO (whatever you want to call it) for 0.92% of the share, whilst the winners ride the chaos, stack entities, run parasites, pivot into foreign markets, and milk the churn.

Because the algorithm doesn’t reward quality anymore. It rewards who can game it harder, longer, and smarter before the next reset.

And AI Overviews are just the same! It is ridiculously easy to manipulate local AIOs because of how weak the pages and context are, and the fact checking and filtering is still laughable at best... Unfortunately, your one man band, technical masterpiece of a site won't cut building niche consensus by itself anymore.

Again, the black hats, the "spammers" are just being fed a constant diet of scale: Domains, content, links, and even better automation tools every other month, and they’re winning because they treat SEO like engineering, not art. They don’t argue about “ethics” in Slack threads, they build machines that ship results every quarter.

I'm just one of the very few people that will allow you to see behind the curtains, and watch as I have consistently made profits from outmaneuvering algo changes for close to 2 decades - Those changes have dramatically slowed in the past 12 months though, and it is easier than ever to rank, abuse the algo and even abuse negative SEO if you know how to "takedown" pages 😅

🚨 WARNING: NSFW SEO KEYWORDS

The ChicagoReader created a dedicated "adult" parasite SEO section earlier in the year, and whilst it initially went to the moon it's stagnated in the last few months...

With that being said, a LOT of these keywords can't run ads, so you won't see CPC valuations - Meaning the site is likely making more in the region of $800,000+ per month from the current traffic levels.

Most independent publishers (especially from the world of PR) would kill for that kind of revenue these days...

Google’s last few updates have actually boosted parasites (AGAIN) on authority publishers, even while hammering smaller independents. That means this site isn’t some anomaly, it’s sitting in the same bucket as Deccan Herald, Times of Israel, Hindustan Times, and others that are quietly printing money off affiliate and adult niches.

What we’re really seeing is the parasite recycling effect: Google smacks down one host MANUALLY, but the demand doesn’t go away, the algo still promotes it, so the same networks just shift content to the next authority domain. 

In other words, this example may have already plateaued, and only because it stopped creating more content, but another publisher in that same vertical is already climbing, and the next domain to explode on to the scene is already plotting.

$800k/mo isn’t a ceiling, it’s a case study. The ones who scale fastest into multiple verticals will be the ones pulling seven figures per month...

You think you’re grinding.

Until you meet someone who does your same job…

But makes 10x the money, works half the hours, and isn’t even stressed!

Despite a lot of companies, freelancers, publishers, agencies and software companies struggling in SEO right now... The industry is STILL projected to grow massively over the next few years.

From $65B to $135B by 2030 👀

That’s a 2× expansion during one of the most volatile  periods of marketing ever. How is that even possible?

Because search algorithms are becoming more influential then ever - Whether it be directly with Google, Amazon, YouTube, TikTok etc... or it's indirectly thru AI & voice assistants sourcing information. 

And even if Google burns the old playbook, brands still need:
- Analysis.
- Research.
- Rankings.
- Revenue.
- Visibility.

What’s dying isn’t SEO.

It’s the old way of doing it - The technical SEO for JUST one site becomes a lot less relevant when it's 10-30 different sites content being mashed together.

And the lower to middle quality work, from audits to outreach to content, is already mostly being outsourced to AI, or at least from 10 hourly workers to one with ChatGPT Pro...

The SEOs who adapt, who treat SEO like algorithmic marketing (which a lot of the black hats have been doing for donkeys years anyway), they will thrive! Especially with the constant diet of new tools, opportunities, platforms and even niches or new geos.

This industry isn’t shrinking. It’s consolidating.
