SEO is crazy, the industry is mental. Beyond the BS of AI adoption and content abuse at scale, when we peel back to old school issues - we see now MORE than ever, Google is indexing less and less content. Your AI AGENT that publishes content while you sleep? Yeah good luck with that. Google is indexing LESS content overall. For EVERY website crawled, less and less content gets indexed. Why? Unique added value is a STRONG MODEL to not index information that already exists 1000x over on other sites. Now - what's also SUPER fun to see on your domain or ANY domain you may be working on: 1. Crawl your website and ensure you are using Google's indexing API 2. Export your crawl, ideally you need KEY metrics which are: > URL, Coverage State from Google, Internal Links, Word Count This allows you to rule out a lack of internal links or thin content (low word count) or to look at the relationship of content length vs performance 3. Use IMPORTXML to get publish dates of content from your crawled URLS > You can use XPATH or you can use REGEX in importXML to get dates i.e. if you are using structured data, it's likely you have datePublished, you can use this importxml in your google sheet to get a publish date =REGEXEXTRACT(IMPORTXML(A2, "//script[@type='application/ld+json']"), """datePublished"":\s*""([^""]+)""") 4. You should then export your search console data and use VLOOKUP to pair your URLS with their last 16 month performance - this way you can see what stuff has some click data or no click data etc. 5. You should then create a filter and look at your content BY YEAR and by coverage state - for example in my snapshot, this is 1 sites content for 2022 where the URL is unknown to Google despite the URLS being 3 years old Here are things to consider: 1. If content ISN'T indexed but was, what did its lifecycle look like? i.e. when was it published, what did the data look like over the period of being indexed 2. If content WAS indexed, but never performed well but had sufficient internal links and was indepth or had a lot of content i.e. 3000, 4000+ words -what did the query profile look like? 3. URLS unknown to Google - if you have lots of these but have sufficient internal links, then you have to ask yourself WHY the URLS are unknown despite being aged? especially if there are internal links 4. Content discovered/currently not indexed are usually in this group when they've lost ALL perceived value. What typically happens is: > Content fatigues > Behavioural data dwindles > SERPs refresh, leading to query losses as the content is deemed of lesser value > Decay continues with recrawl periods growing > Eventually recrawl periods exceed 90-130 day "apparent" thresholds until the content is dropped from the indexed Basically in short MODERN SEO STRATEGIES SHOULD NOT COEXIST WITH CONTENT AT SCALE! Google doesn't NEED content at scale. Don't waste your time, run a leaner, meaner index.
