Don't sleep on past customers/clients. A recent client was a manufacturing company in the Midwest who wasn't pleased with what their paid ads were doing. I came up with a couple of emails centered around tariff uncertainty/some other angles and they sent it out. No expectations. It led to a past client touring the facility and putting in a $20K order that week. Insane ROI (charged them less than $500 if I recall correctly). 🎯 Modern Marketing: A Case Study in Targeting Ourselves Into Irrelevance Apparently, marketing today is a simple two-step process: Blast 5 billion ads across 47 platforms every week. Wonder why nobody cares. At Variety’s recent Entertainment Marketing Summit, industry execs had a collective therapy session about the existential crisis we're all feeling: We're "targeting our way to oblivion." (Actual quote, not satire.) -Zoomers and Millennials are allergic to feeling "sold to" — even while binge-watching 12 hours of branded content. -Authenticity™️ is the word of the year (again), but it’s still mostly treated like a costume we put on, not a core strategy. Meanwhile, brands are personalizing ads down to microscopic levels — "your fridge is in this scene, BUY THIS FRIDGE" — while somehow alienating everyone who isn't already obsessed with their product. The Catch-22? You have to niche down and go mass market at the same time. You have to think global and act like you're besties with someone's local soccer team. Shot: I need a full marketing team. Chaser: For $350. When people say that freelance marketers need to “niche down,” or “embrace AI,” I need them to understand that these are the expectations freelancers are dealing with. (And it’s not limited to Upwork, either.) It’s easy to think freelancers are just “complaining,” but like I said a couple days ago - this is the worst I’ve ever seen it. Telling freelancers they need to “adapt” is somewhat like telling a bar they need to “pivot” during Prohibition.
