Most people write. But they aren’t writers.

The man at the post office can write. The lady at the bank can write. The portly doctor at your clinic can write. The copywriters at your agency can write.

So can the traffic cop who caught you driving, texting, and coaxing your girlfriend’s constipated cat to open up his bowels.

But none of them are genuine writers. None of them can write with the ink that makes tears saltier.

None of them can take simple words, put them in a fresh sequence, and change the way the world thinks about sport, or war, or peace.

Neither can they fumigate parts of your brain to exterminate the pests that have come in via politics.

Nor can they rouse up people into flimsy rafts to go and save pods of dolphins headed towards a secret Japanese atoll to get their heads bludgeoned.

That, dear people, is a different kind of writing.

You can’t, just by the ability to structure a sentence, give yourself the epithet of a writer.

It’s like picking up gravel and calling it gold, because it’s panned from the earth.

Just because you write emails, blogs, and articles doesn’t make you a writer.

Just because you write posts that make your cousin giggle in abandoned Dhanushkodi doesn’t make you a writer.

Just because you write clichéd poetry that rhymes with soutanes and croutons doesn’t make you a writer.

Just because you are always high on cat food, laced with three and half cups of basil and two drops of thyme doesn’t make you a writer.

And just because you are a tongue-pierced, belly-button pierced, and ear-lobe pierced pretentious runt of a copywriter doesn’t mean jack when it comes to writing.

It just means you can use the language a little better than a trained rat that squeaks on cue.

You aren’t a writer if you can’t serrate words and berate souls. You aren’t a writer if you don’t have a pen that can chisel and sculpt paper.

You aren’t a writer if you can’t shorten breath and cauterise nerves. You aren’t a writer if you can’t stab and shred everything ever written.

And most of all, you aren’t a writer if you only write shallowness to fatten your wallet.

Write if you must for your heart. Write for your anger. Write for your angst. Write for all those things that make you delirious.

Write for pain. Write for love. Write for hate. Write for wrongs. Write for rights.

Write to free yourself. Write to unshackle yourself. Write to liberate yourself. Write to save yourself. Write to find yourself.

Be bloody. Be gory. Be red.

Dip words in your veins and your arteries. Write with your truth. Write with the glow that fills you.

Write with light.

Once you reach that point when your writing is the leaking, dripping, oozing trail of your soul, then call yourself a writer.

Then, and only then, should you have the grit, gall, and gumption to put that six-letter word called writer next to your name.

Otherwise, you’re just fluff.
