My role as Assistant Director of Studies tasked me with:

- Representing the school overseas by conducting lectures and teacher training workshops for English language teachers in a number of Russian cities, including Rostov-On-Don and Krasnodar.
- Enhancing the school's international reputation. In 2018 at the request of the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan, I delivered an online series of live webinars to over 2000 Kazakhstani English teachers aimed at improving the quality of English teaching in that country.
- Enhancing the school's online presence. During my time at Erin, I created and uploaded a number of videos, aimed at both teachers and students of English, which amassed over 25,000 views across digital platforms.
- Conducting teacher training workshops for staff.
- Being proactive, offering support to staff before it was requested.

Niche teaching.

If you're unfamiliar with the term, the idea is simple:

Instead of trying to cater to everyone under the sun, and their pet goldfish, you become the go-to expert for one specific group.

I know, choosing a niche might bring up worries like, “Will I limit my student base?” or “How do I even find the right niche?”

But here’s the reality:

Yes, your pool of students might seem smaller, but it’s packed with more quality—students who are looking for exactly what you offer.

And finding your niche?

It's located in that sweet spot where what you love teaching meets what a specific group needs.

It’s totally normal to have doubts, but I’ve experienced first-hand 3 cool things that happen when you commit to teaching a niche:

1️⃣ You save time on lesson prep since your students have similar needs.

2️⃣ Attracting students becomes easier because everything you do on social media speaks directly to your niche.

3️⃣ Your students get better results, testimonials roll in, and you gradually become recognised as a specialist. 

This reputation then enables you to command higher rates 📈

If you feel stuck in the grind with schools and platforms like I did, niche teaching might be your answer.

I hope this provides some clarity, and maybe even sparks some motivation.

But remember:

Nobody's got it all figured out, and that's perfectly fine.

Your niche may have to go through several iterations before you find the sweet spot—mine certainly did!

It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Move at your own pace.

Just keep moving forward, that's the key.

Teaching business not progressing as quickly as you'd like?

Here's one important thing I've learned about 'progress' 👇

It doesn’t follow a straight upward line.

Meaning X hours of work today doesn't guarantee Y result tomorrow.

Progress as a teacher entrepreneur is more like the slow burn of boiling a pot of water.

Even though we might not notice any changes at first, that doesn’t mean nothing is happening.

I've been down that road...

Stretches of time, study, energy, and effort without any tangible rewards.

Optimism fades, and doubts creep in.

It's tempting to question everything.

But here’s something I know now that I wish someone had told me during those challenging moments:

Every day you show up and sharpen your skills, you're adding heat to your pot.

No bubbles on the surface yet? Don't be fooled.

Underneath, things are changing. Energy is building.

And every ounce of your effort cranks up the heat just a bit more.

Remember, every journey has its own rhythm.

Stay true to your purpose and keep doing the right things.

Your pot will boil in time.

One final thing before I wrap this up...

Don’t be too hard on yourself.

You WILL make mistakes, and you WILL mess up.

Know this and own this.

Mistakes do not make you a failure.

There’s always a lesson to be learned.

Extract it, draw a line under it, and move on.

Do this, and each mistake starts moving you closer to your goal, not further away.

If you're okay with your current hourly rate, this one might not be for you...

But if you’ve ever thought, "Can I really charge over $50 an hour for teaching ESL?" Let’s clear the air.

Many ESL teachers think $25/hour is as good as it gets.

I’ve been there.

Wondering, how on earth could I ask for more when others are charging so much less?

Here’s what I learned:

Earning $50+ an hour isn’t a pipe dream.

But it does require 3 things:

1️⃣ Teach Smart: Be great at delivering exactly what your students need.

2️⃣ Get Noticed: Learn how to draw the right students to you.

3️⃣ Sell Your Worth: Confidently explain why you’re worth more.

Starting out, you might only feel strong in teaching.

Marketing, selling and social media might totally not be your thing.

And that's okay.

Feeling nervous about putting yourself out there or asking for a higher price is completely normal.

It's the fear of failing or facing criticism that holds so many of us back.

But here's the truth:

If you really want this, there's no secret shortcut or magic bullet.

Understand that feeling nervous is part of the process.

Know you're not alone, and that stepping outside your comfort zone is essential.

There's no way around the fear.

The only way past it is straight through it.

This growth, this effort, it will change everything.

I’ve watched teachers double their rates because they committed to this journey.

They understood courage needs to come before confidence, and they pushed past their fears

And if they can do it, there's no reason why you can't do it too.

🟢 Don’t sell yourself short.
🟢 Don’t stick to rates that don’t reflect your true value.
🟢 Don’t let a fear of sales or marketing stop you from shining.

This journey isn't just about earning higher rates;

It's about unlocking doors to a future where your skills, dedication, and passion pave the way to having a greater impact on the world.

A fear of putting themselves out there.

I know it's hard - especially making that first post or video.

What if someone disagrees?

Or worse, a troll shows up and says something mean 👿

Here's the truth ⬇️

Avoiding criticism and negativity online is really easy:

Don't do anything 🙅‍♂️

Don't say anything 🤐

Don't aim to make an impact 🎯

When you post content that:

A. Is authentic

B. Comes from a place of wanting to serve others

Two things happen;

You attract the right people 👥

And you repel the wrong ones 🚫

As an ESL teacher who wants to make a difference, it's important to understand one thing:

As soon as you start publicly helping others, criticism and praise come hand in hand 🤝

If you're worried about getting some negativity, you will NEVER find the love.

Put yourself out there, and the right people will follow you.

And the ones that don't?

You weren't looking for them anyway 😉

What are some effective strategies for content creation?

What are some common challenges faced by teachers in content creation?

Teaching ESL online is an incredible opportunity to create a full-time income doing something you love, from anywhere in the world 🌍

BUT...

With so many English coaches out there, how do you make yourself stand out?

Look, I'm not saying this is the only way, but here's what worked for me ⬇️

1️⃣ Find a niche that has a need for your service, the financial means to pay you what you want to earn, and that you feel passionate about helping.

Then craft an offer that solves their biggest English challenges.

I found my niche in Brazilian professionals working in Ireland ☘️

My offer was a 10-week program that levelled up their confidence, job interview performance and email writing.

2️⃣ Learn how to quickly locate and connect with these people.

I used Sales Navigator, but with most niches, you can do this easily for free.

LinkedIn allows you to filter by location, language, and profession, making it easy to pinpoint your ideal audience.

Don't start selling yet!

Emphasise providing value in your initial message 🎁

3️⃣ Create a LinkedIn profile that speaks directly to your niche.

Demonstrate you understand their challenges and goals, and talk about how your solution is tailor-made to help them reach them.

Try to avoid generic goals like 'more vocab'.

Focus on the stuff that really matters, like helping them crush their next job interview or ace their IELTS exam.

4️⃣ Share content: 4 posts a week if you can.

Your first 3 posts should share actionable tips for your niche.

The aim is for them to spend just 1-2 minutes consuming your content and then walk away with something valuable that moves them closer to their goals.

In your 4th post, talk about a client you've helped.

Mention the challenges they had before working with you,

And share specific results you know other members of your niche care about.

If you've got one, attach a testimonial.

No need to be a Canva Picasso.

Raw, unedited screenshots beat fancy graphic design every time. 

My top-performing post for my teaching business was a simple WhatsApp voice note from a thrilled client telling me she performed great in her interview and got the job 📱

5️⃣ Learn how to talk to your prospects in DMs, so you can quickly identify the ones who are a good fit for your program and set up calls with them.

Asking the right questions is key here.

Every message you send should be short and as easy as possible to respond to.

No essays or chunky paragraphs.

And no unsolicited sales pitches.

6️⃣ Get comfortable communicating the value you bring to the table during your calls.

Remember, sales is about communication, not manipulation.

Listen carefully, and only make an offer to the prospects you're confident you can help.

Ever get the feeling that you’ve run out of ideas for your content?

Been posting for a while? Then you know...

Some ideas spark. Others fizzle like a wet sparkler.

But here’s a thought:

Do you really need to come up with fresh ideas each time?

Not necessarily.

Remember Odysseus and the sirens from Homer's Odyssey?

Their enchanting songs would draw sailors in irresistibly.

Now, imagine your content doing just that.

Every niche has its hot-button topics — the "siren songs."

In football, it’s Man United.

In politics? Definitely Trump.

Have you discovered topics that resonate with your audience? Awesome!

Now, twist them, turn them, and use them again.

Recycle and repurpose posts that work.

There's no need to reinvent the wheel every time.

Diving into topics that resonate deeply with your audience will:

1) Keep them coming back.
2) Save you a lot of time.
3) And as a bonus, putting your unique spin on these topics will allow you to position yourself as a thought leader in your niche.

But what if you haven't found your "siren songs" yet?

If you're a Business English teacher, hot-button topics could be 'navigating cultural nuances' 🌍 or 'gaining confidence in conference calls'. 📞

Test the waters.

The best topics are the ones that engage your audience and spark conversations.

6 Lessons Starting an Online Business Taught Me 👇

This might be controversial...

A freelance ESL teacher recently asked me a great question 🤔

"Do we need to get more qualifications before increasing our hourly rate?"

Here's my answer in a nutshell ⬇️

Not really 👎

Now, don’t get me wrong, your credentials are important, and you should be excellent at what you do.

But certificates aren't the be-all and end-all.

When I first started teaching English freelance, I thought my qualifications would impress prospective students.

But, as it turned out, they couldn't care less.

All they wanted to know was if I understood their challenges and if I could help solve them.

Definitely a wake-up call 😅

So instead of focusing on my fancy-schmancy DELTA, I shifted my focus to demonstrating how I could help my students reach their language goals.

Things like:

📧 Writing professional sounding emails

💼 Answering job interview questions in English

🗣️ Communicating confidently in their meetings

🤝 And avoiding misunderstandings with their colleagues

Once I got good at this, it became a lot easier to earn more for my time 📈

💡Extra tip: Offering a specialised program instead of standalone lessons helped too 😉

Here's the bottom line 👇

If you're considering teaching ESL freelance, focus on understanding your students' challenges and showing them how you can help.

Your credentials ARE important, but they're not everything.

Focus on solving problems, and the rest will fall into place.

Here's how you can instantly charge more for your lessons 👇 

If you're looking to break free from low-paying schools and companies, then understanding THIS is essential.

People don't join a gym for the fancy equipment,

They join because they want to look and feel better 💪😎

People don't buy a cookbook just because it has pretty pictures, 

They buy because it helps them make delicious meals 👨‍🍳🍽️

And people don't buy a plane ticket because it looks nice,

The buy because it brings them to their desired destination ✈️🏖️

It's the same with your students!

They don't pay for your lessons for the pronunciation exercises.

They pay you because doing those exercises will benefit them in their lives.

So instead of promoting features like "We'll do exercises together to improve your pronunciation/grammar/vocabulary", try linking it to an outcome your students care about ⬇️

"We'll work together to improve your pronunciation, 𝙨𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙙 𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠".

Tired of spammy LinkedIn messages promising fortunes? 

You're not alone! Here’s why they don’t work 👇

I try to keep things pretty positive on here, BUT...

It's time for a quick Monday morning rant 😤

I got a message from someone I just connected with, claiming she could help me make an extra $20k a month. 

She sent over a booking link too.

My lucky day, right? 😅

She hadn't even viewed my profile 🤦‍♂️

This is far from the first time I've received a message like this on LinkedIn.

Look, I get it. 

If you're a freelancer, your ultimate goal is to make money and have a successful business.

And that is totally OK.

But there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it.

When it comes to sending your first DM, here are 3 important things to keep in mind:

1️⃣ GIVE first.

In business (and life in general), I can't think of a worse way to begin any interaction than trying to 'take' something from the other person.

It's just bad manners.

Do you have any cool resources or tips your new connection might find useful?

Hook them up with some freebies.

You get to build some trust, and they get something valuable.

Everybody wins 🙌

2️⃣ Personalise

Take a sec to read up on their profile.

What industry, company, or country is your new connection working in?

Have they posted anything interesting lately?

Mention at least one of these things in your DM.

A small personal touch will go a LONG WAY to reassuring your recipient there's an actual human being at the other end of your message.

Plus, it'll keep you off the spam list and from getting locked up in 'LinkedIn jail'.

3️⃣ Prove it!

An extra 20k a month is a pretty lofty claim.

Now, I'm not saying she couldn't deliver on that. Maybe she could.

But with any big promise, you'd expect to see some proof, right?

A quick look at this person's profile didn't fill me with confidence.

Not a single case study, testimonial or original piece of content.

Whatever results you help your clients get, whatever your promise, make sure you provide an equal amount of evidence to back it up.

No case studies yet? That's fine. Everyone has to start somewhere.

But if you try to promise the moon and stars right off the bat, you'll face some pretty stiff skepticism.

Counter it by making a more realistic claim while you wait for your first couple of testimonials to roll in.

When I started teaching independently, figuring out what to post was a major challenge...

Consistently sharing educational or inspiring stories and insights is like watering a garden 🌱

You're nurturing your future and helping your audience grow, bit by bit, while building trust. 🤝

With time, this know-like-trust bond strengthens, enhancing your reputation and drawing in new clients.

Sometimes, the biggest hurdle to posting isn’t the market, the competition, or the timing.

It’s the reflection in the mirror—our own fears and hesitations.

Those nagging doubts and "what ifs."

They're the silent gatekeepers holding us back.

The good news?

With the right tools, guidance, and advice backing you up, posting content can become a lot easier.

I recently started reading 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear again.

The big idea is simple:

Small, consistent actions stack up to create big results 🚀

Here are my 5 favourite takeaways and how you can apply them as a teacher entrepreneur:

1️⃣ Tiny changes are powerful:

Take lesson planning. A few small tweaks can turn an average class into an outstanding one.

Clear illustrates this point with an example of a pilot flying from LA to New York 🛩️

Adjusting the route by just 3.5 degrees results in the plane ending up in Washington instead of New York 😯

2️⃣ Your Environment Matters:

Ever rearranged your working space and felt a wave of new energy? ⚡

Clear claims surroundings can make or break our habit success.

A cluttered desk can lead to a cluttered mind, and vice versa.

3️⃣ The Compound Effect:

Just as compound interest grows your savings, small daily habits compound into big life changes.

Imagine improving your marketing or sales skills by just 1% every day – by the end of the year, you'll be 37 times better! 📈

4️⃣ Overcoming Plateaus

Feeling stuck? You're not alone.

Everyone experiences this (even though social media might suggest otherwise).

The important thing is to be courageous and keep pushing forward, no matter how small each step may seem.

We often don't get to see the fruit of our labour until much later.

But if you give up, you won't get to see it at all 🌱

5️⃣ Reward Yourself:

Kept my favourite for last 🎁

Finished drafting that tricky lesson plan?

Go ahead, treat yourself with a cup of coffee or your favourite snack. 🍫☕

The coolest part is your brain starts to associate the dopamine it got from the reward with the task you completed before.

Which is a way of 'hacking' yourself into enjoying hard work.

How cool is that!? 🧠

Just a heads up – your reward should align with your goals.

Binge-watching a whole season on Netflix after writing one post might be overdoing it (even though it's tempting, I know!)

Here's the bottom line:

Whether improving your teaching methods or refining your marketing strategy, it's the small daily habits that count.
