A couple of years ago, I went through a process and landed an offer that completely changed my view of the job search

I was interviewing for a company and was in the final stages 

I always heard the phrase “you need to stand out” - but I never really understood what it meant. How can you stand out from the other interviewees? What if they were just better than me?

Imposter syndrome and self doubts kicked in. But I wanted to do better than all my previous failed attempts. I wanted to convince the hiring manager that I had what it takes to do the job. That I was the best candidate. 

I wanted to change the narrative. So I did something completely different compared to my previous failed interviews. I studied the latest industry events, drafted 2-3 examples of how my role could help solve potential challenges/pain points, and gave the hiring manager a 90-day plan of how I would approach my ‘new job’ if I was hired.

I was being strategic. I was in the final stages. I needed something that would make me stand out. I needed to show my true potential. And it worked.

This is not to say that this will work for everyone. But I do know this:

You are one unique person out of 7 billion, and there is a way for you to stand out that no one else can replicate.

This is my example of how taking a leap of faith in yourself and being willing to do what others are not doing can generate different - and potentially - positive results for you.

I remember feeling embarrassed back when I was in school or as a professional looking for jobs

Everyone else seemed to had it figured out. Extremely successful at whatever they were doing. 

And there I was, feeling like a failure.

But then I realized that everyone lives life at their own pace. What ‘success’ looks like is different for everyone. 

So I started focusing on what I could learn from them, and how I could surround myself with people like them.

I stopped comparing.
I started growing.

And things changed drastically. 

If you’re feeling defeated because of others’ success, change the mindset. Clap for them and learn from their mistakes and wins.

Let’s all be successful, in our own terms.

I DID IT!!

I’m happy to share that after completing a bootcamp as a professional student (if that’s a thing), I will now switch hats to be their new LinkedIn Instructor!

When Zach Wilson brought this opportunity to my attention, I couldn’t believe it. 

I’m excited to bring all my knowledge and experiences building my brand on this platform to the new group that will be embarking in this journey next month.

This happened in a very unique way. I enrolled as a student while being a professional - and this was definitely a challenge. I struggled to understand how to even start. The journey was full of challenges. 

I remember setting meetings with the instructor to get my platforms (SQL, GitHub, etc.) ready to go and things just seemed to not work the way they were supposed to. But I didn’t give up. I wanted to understand how the world of data and AI worked together. I wanted to be 1% better than what I was yesterday. 

I showed up to every class, asked questions (way too many), and connected with others that were more advanced so I could get myself to the level I wanted to be at.

And I did it. I completed that and felt a sense of fulfillment for not giving up. For me, it was more about the journey and the lessons learned. It was the knowledge acquired. I can proudly say this experience changed a portion of my career. 

Now, I will get to sit on the same classroom, but teaching others the power of LinkedIn. A full circle moment.

Today at 25 I’m influencing 300,000 lives, and in the process, my own too

I just reached 300,000 followers on LinkedIn!

This is no longer a dream, but a reality. I never thought I would be able to build a name for myself here, let alone have all of you following my story and seeing me as a person of influence.

300k of you that helped me build a 6-figure brand. That many of you that helped me see rejection as a redirection and land my one “yes”. All of you that helped me develop a passion project that contributed to building my parents dream house and their early retirement.

Just thinking how 8 years ago I was a 16 y/o teenager leaving her home country to come to the US with: 

NO English
NO network/connections
NO friends or closed ones

I was a lost first-gen who didn’t know the opportunities that were out there. It was just me and 2 packed luggage full of dreams.

Today, I celebrate that I represent the non-traditional generation that once thought they didn’t have a space on these platforms.

I celebrate that I’ve built a community with more people than the small town I was born and raised at.

Cheers to 300,000. Here’s to more valuable content, and more people getting the help and visibility they need.

I’m proud of my non-traditional journey

I’m proud that my first job was working as a server at a restaurant and now I work in my dream job.

I’m proud of my parents who worked cleaning bathrooms, preparing food and packing at supermarkets to be able to bring food to the table at the end of the day.

Whenever I’m asked what my parents do for a living, I sometimes felt insecure. None of my parents went to school. They don’t speak English.

They don’t have a degree. They never worked at a big corporation. They don’t have many connections in the professional world. See, my parents had a different reality living and growing up in a humble environment in our small town in the Caribbean.

But my parents are my biggest inspiration.

So whenever I’m asked about my parents again, our background, and our upbringings, I will always feel proud of where we were, where we are, and where we will be.

Because our past doesn’t define us. 

We are defying the odds in a different way. Building legacy and helping others along the way.

Whether you’re looking for a job, building your own business, or wherever you are in life right now: having a non-traditional story is a superpower. Use it accordingly.

Here’s to every LinkedIn user who’s looking for their next opportunity and have a unique story. Don’t let that become a negative influence. You got this.

If you’re looking for your next opportunity, keep your options open

Don’t stop interviewing until you have an offer on the table

I’ve seen this happen over and over again. Jobseekers land an interview and stop looking elsewhere. Since we don’t totally control what the outcome will be, we should keep our options open.

Specially in this job market - don’t put all your eggs in one basket. 

The job search is extremely challenging right now. Let’s make sure we work smarter. Let’s get that next ‘yes’.

I landed multiple job opportunities and skyrocketed one of my former startups a few years ago by upskilling - and it all started with $59.

Continuing Education is sometimes seen as a ‘nice to have’ when in fact - it should be a need.

If you’re looking to grow a business, if you’re unemployed - and even if you have a job, you should always aim to further your career and upskill.

Back when I was searching for a job, I took multiple online courses. I included the certification on my resume and on my LinkedIn - and it paid off.

This was the same for one of my former startups. I took several bootcamps, courses and certifications that helped me increase sales, become a better leader, develop technical skills, and more.

I love sharing resources with the community here, so I’m sharing one today that changed my career: Coursera. I’ve used Coursera ever since I was a student, and haven’t stopped even now as a professional. As someone who grew up in a different world almost, having these types of resources was not common.

The only platforms I used to see growing up and even post-grad were ones that I couldn’t afford. We all know how expensive continuing education can be. Thankfully, we now have platforms that are either free or have very affordable options.
