Today I work with 7-figure brands who value my worth - and my time.

Here’s the 4-step process I followed to build a profitable email marketing business from scratch.

1) Learn from the best

- Study the 1%
- Consume their content, courses, books, etc.
- Apply what you learn
- Get their feedback (if possible), learn, repeat

2) Work with agencies

- Build a list of email marketing agencies
- Apply to open positions or send them an email
- Start working & get as much experience as possible

*You'll learn a ton about systems + business by working for an agency. Start there before branching out on your own.*

3) Share testimonials + case studies

- Ask the agency or current clients for testimonials
- Create case studies of results you've gotten
- Share them on social media, your website, and when talking to potential clients

4) Adopt a strong belief system

- Have a strong "why" for building your business
- Recap your daily achievements (no matter how small)
- Be kind to yourself (seriously)
- View failure as feedback & keep going

Here are 5 tips I’d tell myself if I had to build my email copywriting business all over again:



1) Embrace your mistakes. When you mess up, you learn. It gets you one step closer to excellence. Fail fast, fail forward.  

2) Seek mentorship. Having a mentor will save you months (maybe years) of trial and error. 

3) Tell everyone about what you do. Don't be shy. The more you share, the more opportunities come your way.

4) Other people's judgments are about them (not you). If you have haters, that just means you're doing something they wish they had the courage to do. Use it as fuel and keep going. 

5) Remove distractions. You don't need a website, flashy business cards or a high follower count on day 1. Focus on improving your skills, getting clients and getting results. 

That’s all you need.

Keep it simple, get out of your own way and you'll be surprised how far you'll go.

Your hook should ALWAYS do 1 of 2 things:



1) Be about your reader

2) Pique curiosity

If your hook does anything but this ☝️ your reader might dip.

Here are some examples:

"If you're anything like me, you started your business for one reason: Freedom." (About the reader)

"When I was 22 and graduating college, I had a big decision to make..." (Curiosity)

Why do these work?

✔️ Humans are inherently selfish, so if you speak directly TO them, they're more likely to listen. 

✔️ Humans are also curious by nature. Play on that curiosity (ethically) and you'll keep their attention for MUCH longer.

The #1 thing to do if you're just getting started with email marketing:



Build your flows. 

Your flows (aka email automations) are like your 24/7 salespeople. 

They:

- Educate
- Build trust
- Sell your offers for you

Set them up, make sure people are consistently being added to your list, and watch yourself make more money. 

So many people forget this.

Stop doing THIS in your emails (unless you want people to unsubscribe).


There are lots of mistakes brands make with their email marketing. 

But one of the most common? 

Writing long @ss paragraphs with zero white space that look more like a novel than a newsletter.

Look...

I know you have a lot to share. 

You have amazing stories, a great offer and you just want to help your audience. 

But if your email isn't visually appealing, people won't read it. 

Plain and simple.

My advice?

Add line breaks after every 1-2 sentences. 

This adds more white space and makes it easier on the eyes. 

As a result, people will naturally want to read more (as long as your copy's good, of course 😉).

You don't have to cut down on how MUCH you write, just on how it's presented.

1. Plan the night before ✍️ 

- Write out your to-do list the night before
- Number each task by order of importance so you know exactly what you'll be doing.

Brownie points for time-blocking everything on a calendar! ✨ 

2. Eat your biggest frog first 🐸 

- Tackle the hardest, most important task first thing in the morning. 

This ensures you won't procrastinate on it and you get to enjoy the rest of your day knowing the hardest thing is out of the way.

3. One task at a time ✅ 

Multitasking leads to brain fatigue - real quick. 

- Focus on ONE thing at a time
- If you get distracted, come back to your main task immediately.
