Don’t give up on your dreams.

It’s not too late.

I’m turning 50 this year and I only recently figured out what I want to do when I grow up.

You can’t always judge growth on the surface level. 

Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

Everyone’s growth looks different.

I might have never made a 30 under 30 list but I’m still gunning for a 50 over 50 or 70 over 70?

Can I get an Amen? 

Here’s to all the late bloomers.

Talking about late bloomers, when I was 12, I dreamed of writing a book. Thirty-seven years later, I finally achieved my dream. Better late than never, am I right?

My brother Van Phan drew the illustration down below for my book Do This Daily. He recreated an image I had found on the internet and I hope it reminds you to keep going, and also, to stop with the comparison game. The  only person you should be competing with is the person in the mirror. 

Be a little bit better than the person you were yesterday. The goal isn't to be perfect. It's to be better than who you once were. 

Just because you can’t see the progress doesn’t mean that the growth isn’t happening.

Growth is scary.
It means taking risks.
It means betting on yourself.
It means learning something new.
It means trying something new.
It means becoming whom God made you to be.

The unknown can be scary, but don’t let it make you live life small. You were made to live a big life. So live your definition of “big” (even if that means living a simple life).

What does living your best life look like? Define and imagine it so you can visualize it daily and, more importantly, take the necessary steps and action to get there.

The growth needed to achieve your dreams is the space between where you are today and where you need to be.

What are the books you need to read? People, you need to meet? The training you need to receive? The lifestyle you need to live to close that gap between who you are now and whom you need to be?

You can look at those steps with either fear or excitement. The amount of time it takes to respond with fear or excitement is the same. Choose excitement and inspiration. It’ll get you much further, and you’ll have more fun along the way.

Which do you choose?

Adopting a bias for action was a pivotal shift in my mindset that revolutionized my life. Previously, I harbored an overwhelming fear of making mistakes, which paralyzed me and hindered any progress. However, I realized that I needed to start betting on myself. When you trust in yourself and your capabilities, you start understanding that there are no wrong or right decisions because every occasion is an opportunity to turn a lesson into something extraordinary.

When you’re on your deathbed and look back at your life, it’s unlikely that our thoughts will linger on our CV, the balance in our bank accounts, or the type of car we owned. What will truly matter in these reflective moments are the relationships we’ve built — the people who loved us deeply and those we love in return.

We’ll think about those who made a lasting impact on our lives and those who genuinely cared and shared their time with us. In those moments of introspection, we’ll understand that the material possessions and superficial successes pale in comparison to the richness brought by meaningful human connections. These are the true treasures of a life well-lived.

On April 2, 2024, I'll mark a pivotal moment – four years since being laid off from Fortune Magazine during the height of the pandemic. But rather than sadness, I've chosen to redefine this date as a day of celebration. 

Why, you ask? 

Because on that very day in 2024, I'll be publishing my debut book, "Do This Daily: Secrets to Finding Success, Happiness, and Purpose in Work and Life." 

For those who have faced layoffs or found themselves trapped in toxic work environments, I urge you not to lose hope. God's delays are not God's denials. 

When I was laid off four years ago, it felt like I had lost everything. Little did I know, it was actually the best thing that could have ever happened to me. 

To borrow a quote I stumbled upon in a Bed Bath and Beyond store, "Sometimes, good things fall apart so that better things can come together."

Just one week after my layoff, I began crafting the foundation for the community of SEVEN. 

This unexpected turn of events also led me to forge a deep and lasting connection with someone who has become one of my closest friends. When I lost my job, I had to call  Mita Mallick who was at Unilever at the time. I had to cancel our scheduled lunch meeting which had been arranged when I was still with Fortune. Despite being strangers, Mita generously devoted an hour to speaking with me and offering words of encouragement. The rest, as they say, is history, and she has since become like a sister to me. 

At times, blessings can unexpectedly arise from the most challenging chapters of our lives. It's of utmost importance to cling to hope and nurture unwavering faith, even when adversity looms large. 

For those who have experienced the loss of jobs and missed opportunities, I implore you to persevere. You may not end up where you thought you were going, but you will always end up where you were meant to be.

Life doesn't always take us where we planned, and sometimes, that's the best thing that can happen for us.

The point isn’t to be perfect. It’s not about living a curated life without struggle. The goal is to grow.

It is the continuous effort to be a little bit better than the person you were yesterday.

There is no room for growth if you feel you’ve reached the pinnacle of perfection. No matter where you are in life, come with a beginner’s mindset.

Have gratitude for what have you today as you work to make a better tomorrow. 

Life is more than titles, accolades and a constant need to live a “perfect” life. 

Life is messy and beautiful.
We cannot isolate ourselves from hardship and pain but we can make the decision to grow and learn from these lessons. 

Life isn’t about perfection. 

It’s about service to others without forsaking your own mental health.

It’s about loving yourself enough to treat yourself like someone you love. 

It’s about leaving the world a little bit better than how you found it.

It’s about finding joy in the small moments. 

It’s about being present to the beauty around you.

Instead of asking my 9-year old daughter, Morgan, how school went, I’ve been asking her, “Who did she help today.”

In the past, she would give me one word answers like “good,” “okay,” and “same.”

Now, she’s excited to tell me how she helped Brooke with a difficult math problem. She helped a kindergartener tie their shoes. She helped Ms. Ortega by cleaning the classroom. 

How different would our world be if we celebrated helping others as much as our wins and our accomplishments? 

If you are not getting the answers you want, ask a different question. 

The questions we ask others, tell the world what we value.

The same applies to our questions at work. 

Servant leadership is a culmination of our actions and how we interact with those around us.

Some tough love: it's not that you're too busy to do the things that matter most.  The reason it's not getting done is because you haven't prioritized it enough to put it first in your life and schedule. 

Yeah, I said it. 

One of my favorite quotes is from Peter Drucker, "What gets measured gets managed." The same can be said about what you schedule: what gets scheduled gets completed. 

Simply said, if you measure something and schedule it, you are more likely to act on what you want to get done. 

We want health. 
We want to spend time with those we love.
We want to complete big projects that can impact our company long-term. 

But inevitably, these things get pushed aside as we chase short-term quarterly gains, put out fires, and are inundated with back-to-back meetings, parent PTA meetings, and chasing the next shiny object. 

Sound familiar?

We need to manage our calendars and not let our calendars manage us if we want success and balance in our lives.

Ate like crap, today?
Had a bad night’s sleep? 
Wasn’t productive, yesterday? 
Didn’t exercise this week?

That’s okay.

Don’t be so hard on yourself for today’s mistakes. Our life is not dictated by one day, one week or one period in your life. 

Life is an average of all our actions. What we do daily impacts who we are  in the cumulative.

When you slip, get back up. 

Stop feeling guilty and work on getting better daily.

Consistency is the key, not perfection.

Whenever you feel fear, I want you to remember this acronym: 
FEAR is nothing but False Evidence Appearing Real.

Remember that fear OVER estimates the threat, and UNDER estimates your ability to deal with your challenges. 

When times get tough, remind yourself that you are more than capable of doing hard things. Life doesn't get easier, but we become better equipped to deal with our challenges with time, perseverance, and grit. 

Keep pushing. Keep growing.

On March 27, 2024, I'll lead a breakout session at the Annual Women of Ascend Conference: Leading Together to Empower our Collective Future. 

Ascend members can register for my session for free, "Stop Being the Sidekick When You're the Main Character in Your Own Story: Own Your Voice," from 2:40 to 3:25 on March 27.
