How to break out of the “Rat Race”..

1. Give yourself a why…. (i.e. family, Lifestyle)
2. Stop buying unneeded stuff forcing you to work.
3. Pay yourself first. The “Future You” is the #1 bill. 
4. Store money vs. Saving money. Stay broke (not poor).
5. Build up enough in storage to buy an asset
6. Buy/create assets that pay you (stocks, real estate).
7. When it pays, store that income + add your paycheck.
8. Buy another asset.
9. Press repeat.
10. Press repeat again.

My ‘asset’ was condos. Bought 35 in 12 years on average salary of $80k. Sold some, kept others. By 2014, 18 paid off generating $160k+ a year. Still live off it to this day.

Took 7 years for enough monthly to cover basic needs (2008).
Took 14 to generate more than I was getting from work (2014).
It’s year 27 and now my assets buy assets. 

Outright time, geographic and financial freedom.

If not, here's a predictable cycle.

College: get a good salary and you’ll be fine.

Industry: we’ll give you a good salary for now.

Consumerism: buy me. Don’t worry you’ll make more.

Recession/layoff/age out: sorry, tough times, need salary back

Break the cycle.

Self education: Use salary to create PERMANENT income (real estate, digital products, dividend income, business, etc). You control them. They don’t shut off involuntarily.

Takes work, but once set up it’s worth it.

Because they’re permanent, so is lifestyle. 

Hired 1997. Added first stream (real estate) in 2002. 

Left 2021 with 2000+. Some $50/month, some $2000.

Real estate, dividend stocks, TV show royalties, intellectual property, military and police pensions - my passive tools.

Find one that works for you. Worth the effort. You don’t have to leave work. I stayed for 25 years. Give yourself life options.

Used police, military, consulting career incomes as leverage.

Here's my example.

Started my 25 year career in IT consulting at 21 in 1997, but had other life aspirations. 

2004 – Grad school to play football again, give NFL another shot. I'll get my Masters which will boost business. Can you support me? (A: work part-time, 20 hours, while you go).

2008 – Want to be a police officer in my neighborhood. Giving up 80% salary to do so. It's a calling. Will give me credibility with policing clients. Can you support me? (A: Don’t quit. Let’s find a way to do both (did so for 15 years)).

2012 – Love international affairs and culture immersion. Speaks to my soul. I've designed a role that will drive revenue. Does that work? (A: Yes! We’ll create that role… worked 7 years virtually/physically in 12 countries. Note: Told I wouldn't get promoted outside home org. Didn't care. Wanted experiences and relationships).

2015 - Want to volunteer for 2 years in my Federal Agent military role to run field offices in Turkey and Africa. Life dream. Will broaden diplomatic and leadership skills to engage clients better. Concerned about my civilian career. How can you support me? (A: Don't be. You'll be an even better human when you return. Your salary will be taken care of).

2021 – A happily retired employee who ignored higher paychecks and offers to leave and worked his butt off for 25 years because I was heard. Asked better questions. Turned down 7+ offers to leave for more money along the way. 

Asking better questions helps you Try Life On more.

Don’t just accept status quo.

My 4 hour habit killed my 9-5 routine.

In fact it helped me create lifestyle I don’t need vacation from.

I like to share this habit the most.

I’ll keep sharing, forever, cause it can free you.

The notion we have no time is more we lack commitment to self (yet we bust tail for employers? 🤔)

How to create 1-2 months…

• 4-8am each weekday = 20 hours a week
• That’s 80 hrs a month = 960 hrs a year. 
• That’s 5.71 weeks created = 1.5 months!

Add a Saturday and Sunday 4-hour block… 

• That’s 112 hrs a month, 1344 hrs a year.
• Close to 2 full months on YOU and DREAMS.

Too tired at 4am? Kill Netflix or beer at night. Go to bed. Or reverse it. Work 7-11pm.

Since age 25 or so, 4am was generally my time.

Created several $M businesses this way and designed life while working as an exec, police and military officer. I still do this after 27 years cause dreams evolve. My 9-5 is no more.

If you think this is grinding, you’re wrong. It’s priorities. It’s being selfish for self, to later be selfless for others.

I’m mentally and financially free from nonsense, cause of a habit. Status quo cannot have me again.

Be honest.

You don’t lack time, you lack commitment to self.

In 1997 (age 21) felt instinctive need to be financially free.

Graduated and started my consulting career.

Idea of an office for 40 years felt delusional.

Idea of living free, traveling, working for experiences did not.

After 5 years reading books and thinking, finally…

Developed understanding goal wasn’t money or titles.

Goal was time freedom and money was a tool.

So one week in 2002 I created a freedom plan.

I pray this is your week.

1990 - age 15, 30 day trip across France opened my inner city eyes. World is bigger than Boston. More culture than Haitian I know. Want more worldwide experience. What’s out there?

1997 - age 21, found book Personal Finance for Dummies. Learned passive income is money generated without need to physically be somewhere (i.e. real estate). Creates time.

2002 - age 25, vision - create financial freedom plan to earn time & geographic freedom and have experience like age 15.

Journey was never about money.

Vision as a kid, systematic plan as adult. Executed for years.

Power of reflection + mindset shifts can never be taken from you. Use them to define your path. Don’t default. Design.

If I can change approach at 15 year mark, anyone can.

1997 - start career (running a race)

- Made analyst, want to be Consultant.
- Made Consultant, want to be Manager.
- Made Manager, want to be Sr. Manager.
- Made Sr. Manager, wait… Goalpost keeps moving 🤔 

Freedom didn’t come. More hours did. 

2012 - start mindset shift (defining a race)

- Seek high client impact roles, high pay, least hours.
- Invest 60-70% of pay in real estate.
- Invest in financial self-education.
- Invest in travel & experiences.
- Use pay to build businesses.
- Turn down promotions.
- Focus on Freedom.
- Build lifestyle.

Last promotion was 2013.

2021 - Freedom. No titles. No goalpost. No competing.

Businesses, real estate, worldwide experience.

Stop running. Think critically. What are you chasing? Take a step back and actually see what’s happening.

It's not the game. It's your approach to it.

I always have someone in my ear.

I don’t let my tribe down, ever.

Goes for business partners and investors too.

You wire that way over time, being accountable.

So got up at that 4:30 alarm, drove 30 min. Glad I did.

Be accountable. It really helps.

Let go of your personal history.

Lean into life curiosity.

That’s my advice on this Friday.

Encouragement for those doing different.

On my journey, saw constant posturing for positions - military & corporate 25 years - it was everywhere - never felt right.

My goal was lifestyle we don’t need vacation from:

- acting on TV shows
- trying out for the NFL
- live in the Mediterranean
- becoming a police officer
- buying thousands of apartments
- becoming a special agent in charge
- learning how to travel hack to 100 countries
- opening several clubs, restaurants and businesses
- being the best 25 year IT Senior Exec employee I could
- outright financial, time, geographic freedom for anything.
- monthly adventures like fly 5k miles to read by Aegean Sea

Prefer experience and freedom vs. accolades and money.

Naysayers started in my 20s. 

Family, peers, co-workers - unsupportive statements as path was socially different. 

Was always at the library, aisle 6, reading books. No Google or LinkedIn when I started. (Books are still better by the way).

Was quiet 17 years (loud now to help YOU).

Sent me into entrepreneurial depression.
(Very real. Take it seriously. Get help).

Later got it right. Found people with shared values.

Was a terribly hard and emotional road. But if you think the price for living is too high, wait until you get the bill for regret.

I encourage you to reject status quo (if right for you)

- Do that thing. Have that experience. 
- Disregard societal noise
- Try life on more
- But please... Find your tribe. Get support.

I'm a solo + entrepreneur, and I'll never push it on people.

Because being an employee can be awesome too.

Talk of building business, securing future, optimizing it all, for many it makes sense to just do a job you love and live life.

Memories alone will pay you forever.

Full time exec 25 years, but also an officer for 15, same time. 

So most Friday nights after corporate I'd patrol midnight shift starting 8:30pm. My family would film me leaving because to my kid I was "Batman" to him, the car was the Bat Mobile. 

Always waved leaving - the look on his face priceless.

Today is Friday and I miss it. Miss my shift mates.

Doing a job you love is cool.

Don't fall to pressure of entrepreneurial hype.

Fall for career as a life experience. Money is not everything.

Glad I did this starting age 33.

For your thing... Grab a book. Hire a mentor. Attend seminars. 

Pick an approach, study it. Execute over a long period.

Relying on social media as ‘the source’ is lazy. 

Found 2 books mid 2000s. Convinced me to buy single family homes and pay them off. Worked. Financially free. Re-read and executed what they said over and over for 2 decades. 

Added 3 additional books in 2010s relative to investing, man’s purpose and life. Have read them 10+ times each. Led to designed life, understanding my purpose.

Finally added a 6th book after 23 years - Power of the Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy to understand how and why we think how we do, and how to control it. Read it 7x since picking it up.

Same 6 books. Over and over and over.

Books/deep info > gimmicks. Stop chasing. Start executing.

Career highway is crowded. 

People all vying and competing for same things.

What if you intentionally designed your journey to have more experiences vs. default chasing status as an approach?

Constant competing with people doesn’t make sense. 

Creation - build lifestyle, business, experience - does.

Get off crowded highway. Make your own. There’s no traffic.

This world believes too much in instant.

Only way I made it this long, cause I had a why.

Three phases to my journey, all specific to a why.

1. Securing basic needs (2002-2014)

Invested in condos and created streams of $160K. Food, shelter, decent quality of life covered for life, no employer needed (although I worked for 8 more years).

2. Help others secure basic needs and dreams (2015-present)

Built Quattro Capital with partners to help people reach their why. We've helped invest $100M in <4 years with 25%+ annual returns. Years 2021 and 2022 were great. Year 2023/24, a tough, high interest rate, low liquidity market. Brutal actually.

3. Securing dream lifestyle (2020-present)

Idea in 2015 to create Mediterranean lifestyle between 2 countries. Intentionally sought real estate opportunities there. Not money related, to build a lifestyle I don't need vacation from. To be respected part of community. To live different. Idea to creation took 7 years. On 3rd project now (villas and apartments) and building personal home.

Real estate or other entrepreneurial things help secure life, design life, and help others do same.

But it ain’t instant. Sometimes it sucks. It’s work. 

And it’s a long game.

I’m on year 27. I’m still evolving. Still making mistakes, but know how to mitigate most.

Use pay to buy things that pay you, get basic needs covered.

You’re chasing $20M schemes.

When a few $000 will do.

How it went for me.

Monthly Family Basic needs (since approx. 2010 to now)

- $2400 mortgage, insurance, etc.. (humble home)
- $2000 bills, gas, food, other
- $2000 kids, life, travel, fun
- $0 on cars and junk (my 2005 Infiniti is just fine)

Mindset was secure family needs, I'm in control.

By 2012, $6400 met by cashflow of 6 paid off condos.

Used paychecks systematically to buy them over a decade.

Bought 8, used equity from 2 + checks to pay off rest.

All raises kept living standard same. Invested rest.

Once basic needs are covered, you're beholden to no one.
(Read this again. If you absorb anything, absorb THIS!)

Life opens in ways not easily explainable. 

We don't need $20M to be free, yet folks chase it for decades.

What’s your basic needs number?

I’m watching mentors 15 years older than me.

Paying attention to work for work sake syndrome.

Real estate is a skill for life.

Business itself is a skill for life.

Knowing when and how to pull back a bit and enjoy it all is the best skill of all.

The whole point is to be able to live life better, have more fun, build more family and experiences, work on creative projects. We need time for it.

Whatever your business or thing is, don’t forget why you started it in the first place.

Growth is good. So is actually living.

Rammed it into my kid brain for 15 years.

Once I let that nonsense go, focused on creation, collaboration, giving of self and knowledge, life changed.

I’m an ‘accidental’ solopreneur since 2022. 

Unintentionally started personal brand posting on being

- military federal agent
- corporate exec while a policeman
- views and tactics around lifestyle design
- traveler hacker of 100 countries 300 times 
- my financial, time & geographic freedom journey
- real estate investor of 2000 units, 200 acres, 2 countries
- failures & lessons learned doing above

Asked to coach. Started with email, zoom, PayPal. 

Demand got larger. So I started building...

1. Mission – Help people (re)design lifestyle
2. Sought help – Paid mentors for help with tools/process
3. Built a curriculum - To achieve the mission statement
4. Packaged Info - Made 25 years of knowledge searchable
5. Technology – Plugged in 4 virtual tools
6. Optimized the Process - an art, not a science
7.  Process to locate people genuinely needing help

Watched a mentor create his own economy helping people, paid for his time and course. 

(Note: I pay experts for time. Cuts learning curve by years)

Created trylifeon.com, the Try Life On podcast to help people create lifestyle they don’t need vacation from.

Revenue so far is $500k+ and waiting list.

More importantly, impacting lots of people positively. Gives me purpose I lost when I retired from military and policing.

Formal education brings you into the status quo world.

Self-education allows you to sculpt your own.

There’s a huge difference.

Seek knowledge, act on it. 

Status Quo is default language we don’t have to follow.

Note: Nowadays, I generally spend $100K-$150k on self-education annually including coaches, seminars, experiences, travel, courses. I'd do more if I could. There’s a lot out there to learn, but it’s at different levels as you grow.
