A little about me...

I'm an investor, entrepreneur, restaurant owner and explorer of 98 countries. I host the Try Life On Podcast, and coach professional 1:1 on wealth and freedom, helping you build lifestyle you don’t need vacation from.

In 2021 I retired from the 9-5 world after 25 years as Senior Executive at Accenture, a global consulting firm. Was also a Federal Agent through my US Air Force military service. I retired after 22 years as Lt. Colonel. And I became a midnight police officer later in life for the Montgomery County Police Department as a means to give back to local community. Yes, all at the same time.

Along with partners, founded Quattro Capital, a private equity firm. I’ve acquired roughly $250M in real estate with investor partners. I started buying real estate in my 20s as a means to capture time freedom to live more. 

I have strong passion for living life leveraging freedom principles (time, financial, location, purpose & relationships) and started Try Life On Media to help others do the same. The Try Life On podcast and speaking engagements are my joy. 

I love to say I used real estate, passive income, lifestyle design principles combined with leveraging my three 9-5 professional careers to beat the rat race and build lifestyle I don't need vacation from. I’ve completed that mission and now my passion is to help others do same.

Traveled to 12 countries

Aspiring professional bodybuilder
Drives better than his police officer father
Working for Amazon while investing in real estate
Travels hacks to me and his little brother every few weeks

What I am most proud of today:

As of this morning at 4:58am, now lifts more on incline bench press than Dad (2 x 315lbs). My 48 year old self got it once.

How many experts have told you "you can't" so you don’t?

In my family we don't listen. We respect people, absorb info, and make appropriate moves regardless of what people say.

Create your world accordingly, it’s yours.

We were taught the wrong game.

Work, get biggest title, highest salary, mortgages, stuff (payments), cars, beers Friday, Costco and kid activities Saturday, recover Sunday. Need more stuff. Press repeat.

Many loop this cycle 40 years sending money to 401Ks to break the cycle at 65. (P.S. financial industry makes trillions in fees. It’s why they lobby the gvt for you to invest more).

No thanks. That’s not freedom. It’s consumerism.

How to break out of the “Rat Race”..

1. Give yourself a why…. (i.e. family, Lifestyle)
2. Stop buying unneeded stuff forcing you to work.
3. Pay yourself first. The “Future You” is the #1 bill. 
4. Store money vs. Saving money. Stay broke (not poor).
5. Build up enough in storage to buy an asset
6. Buy/create assets that pay you (stocks, real estate).
7. When it pays, store that income + add your paycheck.
8. Buy another asset.
9. Press repeat.
10. Press repeat again.

My ‘asset’ was condos. Bought 35 in 12 years on average salary of $80k. Sold some, kept others. By 2014, 18 paid off generating $160k+ a year. Still live off it to this day.

Took 7 years for enough monthly to cover basic needs (2008).
Took 14 to generate more than I was getting from work (2014).
It’s year 27 and now my assets buy assets. 

Outright time, location and financial freedom.

- losing an audition to be on the Wire.
- being a Federal agent in Turkey and Africa
- travel and immersing in 100 countries 300x
- two good tryouts but not making it to the NFL
- failing at opening coffee shops and restaurants
- winning by navigating a consulting career for 25 years
- failing, almost quit, in 2008 financial crisis in real estate
- success. More passive income than work salary by 2014
- success, no quit, own 26 apartment complexes in 2 years
- courage at 33 to follow passion, hometown police officer
- energy to be a police officer & exec same time for 15 years
- fail again as a club/restaurant investor - two projects flop.
- build Mediterranean island property for a lifestyle change
- executing Middle East philanthropy projects. Getting better.
- produce media projects with mentors. I'm New. I'll take risk.

There is so much life to be had if we just Try Life On. Just do.

I won because I lost MANY times.

I won because the person I've become, not what I did.

Consider taking (calculated) risks to experience life, not worrying about opinions of others (a superpower).

Today for me it’s sitting by the Chesapeake Bay reading Power of the Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy, 10th time, in peace, giving thanks for the journey. Next stop, who knows.

In reflection after leaving 25 years office life, realize even more how damaging to mind and body it was.

Heavily refocused on mental + physical health since.

Being behind a computer unconsciously for hours on end was terrible. I wish I paid attention to it more.

- bad for mental health 
- bad for physical health
- bad for business and clients

A refocus on health at 47 has made me a better business person, more focused human, partner, and coach.

Not to mention down 30 lbs.

Walking, water, weights, whole foods (processed is poison) saved me. As has focus on re-straightening posture with back exercises (love deadlifts) and digital detox (mental diets).

First deal ever was a $90K 1BD/1BA condo in Virginia. I was 26.
Went to Fairfax County, VA library to get a book it to closing. Followed the steps. Walked out.

Last deal (w/ partners) was $38M, 240 unit apartment complex (3rd in a year) and 10 acres on an island. Still executing from books, but with people, figuring it all out.

So many exit 9-5 then create or pick another restrictive one.

There’s no instant financial freedom.

Our society believes too much in instant.

Uber, instant noodles, netflix, on-demand everything… 

Doesn’t work that way in investing.

Pick one investment strategy (real estate, stocks, social media, etc...), stay at it. Get really tight on info. Then add patience and consistency (emphasis on latter). 

Even if you hit a windfall (lottery), you've still not developed skills to maintain it and multiply it. Skills take time to lock in.

Self education is paramount. 

Consistency of execution is everything.  My own journey...

7 years for more income than expenses (2008).
14 years to generate more income than work (2014).
27th year now. Have outright time and financial freedom.

These guys get it. Takes work & adjusting, over years, to win.

In 2002, a 70 year old real estate agent changed my life. 

Her advice could change yours too.

Bought my first investment for $90k. Was 26 and full of ego. 

Did that deal on my own. Sought a broker to help me do a $300k deal, maybe $500k. No plan. No approach.

She convinced me to NOT chase status symbols. Rather, chase freedom, salary for self for life options. (See video). 

Stick with small. Pay them off. Secure life then go for growth. 

Did 14 with her. Paid off now. A $120k self salary… freedom.

I’ve looked. Can’t find her. May have past on. I’m eternally grateful. Her practical advice altered generations of my family.

Play a different game.

Secure basic needs and life options first. Then grow. 

That’s power.

Enjoyed time in corporate, but hated the posturing.

Also hated the "just climb the ladder, you'll be fine" mentality.

Didn't blindly subscribe to it. Nor should many.

Flip the mindset.

Here's what I mean.

Mindset #1 - Bring home the most money one can make.
Mindset #2 - Make the most of the money you bring home 
(invest it, leverage learned skills)

The difference is priorities and time spent.

#1 makes a contest out of career (posturing)
#1 puts default emphasis on climbing (time lost)
#2 puts focus on life outside the contest (life values)
#2 puts focus on using pay to create options (time gain)

Started with the first in 1997. Shifted to the second in 2012.

Earned financial, time, & location freedom w/ second mindset.

Became a police officer age 33. An idea in my head for 5 years after a military deployment. Just helped the world. Let’s help local community too. That was my idea, while being a full time consulting executive too.

Before midnight shift I’d stop at my son’s room to say goodnight. Like clockwork “…have fun tonight Batman. Let me know when you catch Joker!”

I miss those moments.

Doing a job you love is cool too. 

It can be a way to fulfill your purpose.

I fulfilled mine. Never caught Joker though.

When gurus say be an entrepreneur to live the life… garbage.

Don't fall to pressure of internet hype.

Follow your own version of success.

The notion we have no time is lack of commitment to self, I believe (yet we stay up late building employer dreams 🤔)

How to create a 14-month year.

• 4-8am each weekday = 20 hours a week
• That’s 80 hrs a month = 960 hrs a year.
• That’s 5.71 weeks created = 1.5 months!

Add a Saturday and Sunday 4-hour block…

• That’s 112 hrs a month, 1344 hrs a year.
• That's 2 full months on you and dreams (remember those?)

Whether 4-8am, 7-11pm, 2 at lunch + 2 in car, be intentional.

Started businesses this way, while an exec and police officer. 

Still do after 27 years (even from the Middle East).

Dreams evolve. 

Get up. We don’t lack time, we lack commitment to self.

Got to Frankfurt for those brats. Stayed 5 hours, hacked a flight to US for son’s swimming championship next day 8am.

After a 30 day trip to France in 1990 at age 15 I realized it’s a form of constant learning. That led to understanding building businesses and having multiple careers is constant learning. 

Ways to engage life and not feel stagnant. It’s all related. I’ve never looked back. Nor should you.

This is not a travel post. It’s a constant learning post. A call to live and create more post.

Less excuses. More creative thinking about business and life.

Yes, You can.

Since 2010, I've actively designed business/personal life.

Here's my schedule for today in Lebanon.

4am - time to get up. Black coffee is brewing.
5am - swimming in Mediterranean Sea, coastal town
6am - gym. Leg and shoulder day. 100 pushups
8am - butcher for steak & eggs. Fruit stand watermelon
9am - breakfast complete. Drive north to mountains 
10am - 4 mile, 1500m up hike, Jabal Moussa Mountains
2pm - steak house. More whole food. No processed junk
3-8pm - US east coast up. Real estate & coaching work

Note: Hike was incredible. Talked life, faith, business with my friend and brother Edy. Also walked silent to enjoy nature. Four hours of joy and friendship.

Key for my designed life is intentionally living where I have a full day before US wakes up. Being with tribe/people I value. Focus on experiences, not stuff. Stay avail for clients. Work remote. Travel hack to US for family as needed.

A thought for you.

Live up to your own ideals and not someone else's. It's not about getting out of work, but rather setting up your lifestyle, so you can work on your terms. 

Build lifestyle you don't need vacation from.

The best paradigm shift in business I learned.

The goal is to work ON the business, not in it. 

Took me years to understand this concept.

From 2002 - 2014 I self managed 35 investment properties I bought, the furthest ones 300 miles from each other.

No time for self, coupled with three careers and kids.

Finally woke up. Hired 3 property managers. Outsourced. 

Gave up 10% revenue to regain 90% of my time.
(For my TLO coaching students, example of light green time).

We frequently hold on out of fear of losing control. I wanted the money. In reality, the time was more valuable. You’re actually taking control, creating leverage and lifestyle.

By loosening grip, was able to focus on acquiring 2000 more over years and life itself. I take phone calls, not paint walls. 

What’s cool is creating jobs and opportunity for those that do. Have 12 property managers today in 8 states.

Goes for any type of business.

Spend more time ON the business than IN it.

You’ll live more by giving self more time to live it.

Police officer 15 years.
Federal agent 22 years.
Consutling exec 25 years.
Real estate investor 27 years.

Got it right to live along the way. Valued experiences more than promotions, for example. Work was never life to me, just chapters in it, though school stressed it as a destination.

Some 99 countries later, still in awe of this planet. Find myself on Gressholme Island, Norway after 20 miles walking last 2 days exploring with an amazing friend.

I did good putting down past lives for new ones, new relationships, new places, new experiences - sauna and cold plunging in the Baltic Sea (Nordic Fjords) today being latest.

Monday message:

We have choice. We lie to ourselves saying we don’t. But we do. Working is good. Working on your life book while working is better. My ‘full book’ is my career accomplishment.

It’s ok to build your employer’s dream life for that paycheck, we need it. But be sure to build yours along the way too. If I’d waited until current age 48 to start, my book would be smaller.

I wish you happiness on your journey.

Focus on practical freedom. Here's how:

1. Get your basic needs covered.

2. That allows you to destress and control your time.

3. Leads to time freedom – mental and physical space to do what it is you want. Experiences and relationships you have time for create more relationships and experiences. Life compounds on itself. And you can do this because…

4. You’re not financially obligated to anyone (employer), now you have time to access life and earth as intended.

How it went for me:

Monthly Family Basic needs (since approx. 2010 to now)

- $2400 mortgage, insurance, etc. (humble U.S. based home)
- $2000 bills, gas, food, other
- $2000 kids, life, travel, fun
- $0 on cars and junk (my 2005 Infiniti is just fine)

Mindset is always secure/protect family basic needs and always be in control (not at mercy of employer, for example).

Then protect it and build from there (any new entrepreneurial or life endeavor you don't pillage your basic needs resources - where so many faulter).

By 2012, met need of $6400 by cashflow coming from 6 paid off condos (all around $100K a piece, (Maryland and Virginia)). Used paychecks to systematically pay them off over a decade.

No one has controlled my time since.

I chose careers for purpose, didn’t need them.

Get practical.

Chase money it runs. It's an illusion of fulfillment.

Play this game or a different one. Up to you.

We need money for life. 

But you're confusing life with money. 

I did until I woke up 15 years into careers.

Experiences and relationship became primary currency.

Got strategic in many ways.

i.e. Turn down promotions in favor worldwide experiences and passions. Use extra time to build outside streams of income, not posture inside corporate walls. Build lifestyle you don’t need vacation from. 

Done it, helped > 200 do same via coaching. 

Money has a role but it's not that.

1. What’s your dream day look and feel like
2. What’s the personal blueprint that enables it day to day
3. What work blueprint supports it. If current doesn’t, pivot.
4. You now have tools for that day. Practice it. Try It On.

Been ‘Trying Life On’ a long time. Involves mindset + skillset.

Many don't realize 20 years formal education sets us up to forget dreams. The system is set to build someone else's.

Attacking work with financial & time freedom in mind helps. 

Chasing titles as a default doesn't. Steals time.

One of many external validation traps.

Experts have a way of making you feel less than cause you didn’t build that thing, execute that plan, go to that place.

They have no idea who you are.

Their opinion has no bearing on you.

Your good. You got this. Your goals are yours.

What they don’t realize is work + life aspirations are deeply personal, not cookie cutter. Your life book is your life book.

- 1:1 lifestyle design and wealth coaching to 200+ people
- heavily reaffirmed faith in 2023 due to an incident
- conquered depression / major depressive disorder
- health journey 253lbs to 225 lbs - deadlift 500lb now
- first real estate deal, $90K (2002), last $38M (2023)
- owned 30+ apartment complexes in last 8 years
