An Important Clarification About the ASCM Discussion

Over the past few weeks I have shared concerns about the direction of the Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM). I want to be absolutely clear about one important point.

I am not criticizing the association itself. I am not criticizing the chapters, instructors, volunteers, or members. In fact, I think the work they do is extraordinary. They help people build careers. They strengthen the global supply chain community. I love that. I support that. And I want it to continue for decades to come.

My concerns are focused on governance and leadership.

The executive team is responsible for day to day operations. The board is responsible for strategy, oversight, and ensuring that the association fulfills its mission responsibly. That is where the problems lie.

ASCM has a large executive team. Their compensation is significantly higher than peers at other associations. The CEO alone earns over $1,000,000 per year even though ASCM is losing millions of dollars every year. The lack of meaningful cost controls and the absence of a balanced budget are difficult to understand.

Over time, ASCM has evolved into something unusual for a membership association. The very people and companies who believe they are “supporting” the organization are actually just customers. Certification holders, instructors, corporate members, channel partners, students, and even chapters have no voting rights and no voice in the governance of the association. We all pay, but none of us have representation.

Viewed objectively, the data in the 990 filings is sobering.

The association is suffering a rapid decline. If nothing changes, ASCM risks a financial collapse soon. If that happens, decades of hard work by thousands of volunteers could disappear. The certifications we value and the SCOR model that so many rely on could end up sold off, transferred, or simply fade away like so many standards from organizations that failed to adapt or govern responsibly.

A handful of friends have reached out with concerns about the damage they think I am doing to ASCM’s reputation. I understand that concern. But the deeper I look at the data and the governance structure, the clearer it becomes that the association is in serious trouble. I know many people who have been working quietly behind the scenes for years, trying to nudge changes and improve the situation. That approach is admirable, but it has not worked.

This is not about assigning blame to the people doing the work.

This is about saving the association while there is still time.

The board of directors is meeting today. This is the time to share your point of view so that we can create a sustainable future for ASCM.

Raising these concerns is an act of loyalty, not hostility. It is about protecting a community, a legacy, and a mission that matter deeply to many of us.

If you only have Villan in the movie and not a hero, it’s not a love story. 

There is one fundamental problem in all this criticism of ASCM Jeffrey McDaniels  and Daniel Stanton . Why ASCM considered as the Golden North Star of Supply Chain Education, specifically in USA? I care less about their governance issues and SCOR IP issues what I care more the quality and innovation they provide to supply chain community. Which is frankly very archaic, out of time and very expensive to pay the hefty salaries of Executives. It is time now that Supply Chain Community look at other providers of Supply Chain Education, evaluate them, critique them, promote them and embrace them. 

So it is about time, supply chain folks start caring less about Villan and start finding the hero(s).

Weekly Update to SCM Professionals – ASCM Situation

Here’s a quick update on my ongoing discussions with ASCM.

In addition to the posts many of you have seen, I’ve been speaking directly with ASCM staff. At this point, nothing has changed. The conversations remain difficult — there are fundamental differences between how ASCM sees the state of supply chain education and what many of us experience every day. They believe things are fine; many of us know they are not.

Thank you to everyone who commented or reached out privately. Your feedback is consistent and paints a clear picture of the gaps.

I’m continuing these discussions through the end of the month to understand ASCM’s perspective better. But let’s be honest: there’s still no alignment between their view of reality and what members, instructors, and partners know needs to improve.

I’ll keep at it, but if nothing shifts, I will share my observations publicly again. This is too important to let slide.
