𝗔 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 
 
I am often asked what my job as an internal auditor actually is and at the beginning it wasn't easy for me to put it into simple words. 
 
One way to explain it, without using technical terms that few understand, is that we are like doctors for organizations. 
 
Here's the analogy. A good doctor or 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 (𝘄𝗲): 
 
➡️ Recommends treatments to patients to prevent illness.  
 
We recommend measures to management to prevent the organization from getting into trouble. 
 
➡️ Detects insidious diseases and recommends proactive therapies.  
 
We gradually identify governance issues and recommend solutions to prevent the problem from escalating. 
 
➡️ Identifies the cause and not just combat the symptoms.  
 
We should identify the root causes and not just the problems. 
 
➡️ Cares about his patients, has a lot of empathy and is a good communicator.  
 
As an internal auditor, we also need emotional intelligence and impeccable communication skills. 
 
➡️ Always continues his education at conferences or seminars in order to be able to provide his patients with up-to-date care.  
 
Just like us, we are obliged by the Standards to keep our skills up to date. 
 
➡️ Are sworn to secrecy.  
 
We treat information with the utmost confidentiality.

When I was young, I played tennis and was nervous in critical situations of the match. 
 
I would then miss the decisive balls and lose. 
 
I wanted to learn to perform my best in critical moments and reach my full potential so that I no longer had the annoying feeling that I could actually do much better. 
 
I came across Timothy Gallwey's book, "The Inner Game of Tennis."  
 
This book provided the answers I was looking for. 
 
It teaches us to silence the inner critic—the one who doubts and overanalyzes every move. 
 
On the tennis court, this meant focusing on the ball rather than fearing the miss. 
 
In the workplace, it means concentrating on the moment and the task at hand rather than worrying about the future outcome and possible criticism or failure. 
 
These insights helped me get my nervousness under control and reach my full potential in critical situations.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 
 
The Global Internal Audit Standards, in particular the Standard 11.2 Effective Communication, emphasizes the importance of communication as one of the most important requirements for internal auditors and their staff. 
 
Here's an experience I'll never forget. 
 
While preparing next year's internal audit plan, the following happened. 
 
I called the Head of Strategy and told him that I wanted to talk to him about current and emerging risks. 
 
To my surprise, he said he didn't have much to say about it, but if I wanted, he could come to me.  
 
I told him to just come, I would wait for him in my office. 
 
I felt a little queasy. Was this going to be another formal meeting with not much to find out? 
 
When he arrived and we sat down at the conference table, I asked him: "𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗘𝗢 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼?". 
 
Surprisingly, we talked openly for over an hour about strategic goals and opportunities.  
 
It was one of the most insightful conversations I've ever had.  
 
Not to mention, by understanding the company's strategy, we were able to customize the audit plan.  
 
This can be achieved by adapting your communication style and content rather than following a set script.

I learned to ask a simple question to answer this. 
 
Would you do this work even if it wasn't paid or just covered your costs? 
 
This hypothetical question is surprisingly simple, but it gives you clues about whether you really like your job or are doing it for other reasons, such as material reasons. 
 
If the answer to that is no and if your circumstances permit, you should consider looking for a new job or career path. 
 
Imagine you don't like your job and you have to do it 40 hours a week.  
 
This looks like torture. 
 
You will also never reach your full potential and excel if you are not passionate about your work. 
 
Recently, in a meeting, colleagues were amazed that I write almost daily on LinkedIn about my experiences and try to inspire others to explore new paths. 
 
I simply told them that I love this activity and that I really enjoy what I do. By the way, I'm doing it for free.

Thank you to everyone who participated in a recent survey.  
 
The results reveal that only 𝟳% 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.  
 
📈 12% through 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 
🗣️ 63% through 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿  
👬 18% through 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗻𝘁 
 
That means, 𝟴𝟭% of fraud tips originate from reports of concerns and management tips. 
 
In the Global Internal Audit Standards 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟯.𝟭 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 suggests that skills related to 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗱 should 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱.  
 
Furthermore, fraud should also be considered in both the risk assessment and audit planning processes. 
 
From my experience, internal auditing, with the current methodologies, is effective at preventing fraud 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁. 
 
 How will we be handling this expectation gap? 
 
𝘿𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙪𝙙𝙞𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙚 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙣𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙪𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣?

𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 
 
The internal auditor faces a problem when management remediation plans can only be resolved satisfactory through extensive projects, such as implementing an SAP system to replace the completely outdated, internally programmed system. 
 
Such a project can stretch over several years.  
 
What should the auditor accept as a management action?  
 
In my experience, the situation often changes completely after a year, or further delays occur.  
 
The longer it takes, the more redundant the problem becomes. 
 
𝗧𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲, 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 
 
In such cases, it is advisable to implement immediate corrective actions or temporary controls to minimize the risk.  
 
The next step would be to propose that management create a project plan for the SAP implementation and outline how they plan to address the control issues. 
 
Ideally, this takes less than a year.  
 
Follow-up should focus on these two points, which are more realistic to achieve.

In the past, having a strategic roadmap for the internal audit function was a best practice. 
 
In the Global Internal Audit Standards, Standard 9.2 now requires having an internal audit strategy. 
 
If you are struggling and need have a jump start, here are some tips I have applied in the past.  
 
Feel free to pick and choose what works best for you and don’t forget to align it with your organization’s objectives. 
 
➡️Perform annual strategy workshops with your internal audit team to involve and engage them. 
 
➡️ Perform a SWOT analysis to understand where your function stands. 
 
➡️Use a maturity model to envision where you want to be in the future. We were using the PwC maturity model level to capture unrealized values: 
 
    Level 1: Assurance Provider 
    Level 2: Problem Solver 
    Level 3: Insight Generator 
    Level 4: Trusted Advisor 
 
From where we were, we decided to go to the next level, which was to become an Insight Generator. 
 
➡️Define the building blocks and make a statement about your endeavor. Like:  
 
🌐 Fit for the Digital Future 
🌐 Driven Value Auditing 
🌐 Auditing Value at the speed of the risk 
 
🏢Building blocks could be: 
 
People Development, Innovative Leadership, Digitalization, Cooperation, Strategic Audits, Ethical Values, Quality, Performance, Learning, Process, Staffing, Technology. 
 
➡️Create a Business Plan (I suggest 3 years) to further define objectives and performance criteria for each building block. 
 
➡️Create a risk register to meet your goals and for regular reporting on the need for actions to get back on track. 
 
➡️ Present to the Board and Senior Management to showcase you are on a journey. 
 
With this, you can meet the Standards and are well prepared for the next EQA.

I was pleased to see that the Global Internal Audit Standards place a strong emphasis on competence, which is explicitly mentioned  
 
in 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝟯: 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, defined as 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚, 𝙨𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨. 
 
It's clear that having a good audit plan without the competent resources to audit the critical areas, risks, and controls would pose an 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸. 
 
As a 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, I recommend creating a customised 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘅 based on a mix of different sources: 
 
𝟭. 𝗜𝗜𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘅: I prefer to use the competency level to assess each auditor's level based on general knowledge, applied knowledge, and expert knowledge. 
 
𝟮. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘅  offered by Gartner:  
 
It considers additional core competencies like:  Soft Skills, Audit, Controls and Risk Management, Business Acumen, and Information Technology. 
 
𝟯. 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹: Gartner also offers a review tool that you can use. 
 
𝟰. Integrate various required competencies from the 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻:  
 
Make sure to incorporate the competencies needed to fullfil the audit plan. 
 
𝟱. 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿'𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 and Current Level: Identify any gaps.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 – 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 
 
The Columbo Method, inspired by the 1970s TV series "Columbo," is a clever interview technique that I have applied in my role as an internal auditor on some few occasions. 
 
It involves three main steps to extract information without the interviewee realizing they are revealing critical details.  
 
Here are the steps with examples: 
 
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 
 
O͟b͟j͟e͟c͟t͟i͟v͟e͟: Make the person feel at ease to see you as a friend rather than an auditor. 
 
H͟o͟w͟ ͟t͟o͟ ͟I͟m͟p͟l͟e͟m͟e͟n͟t͟: Engage in light conversation about non-work related topics such as hobbies, recent events, or the weather.  
 
This non-threatening dialogue helps lower defenses, preparing the way for more candid responses later. 
 
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 
 
O͟b͟j͟e͟c͟t͟i͟v͟e͟:͟ Introduce the main question at a good moment after building a rapport. 
 
H͟o͟w͟ ͟t͟o͟ ͟I͟m͟p͟l͟e͟m͟e͟n͟t͟: Ask your key question in an indirect way, embedded within casual conversation.  
 
This indirect approach lessens the chance of the person becoming defensive. 
 
E͟x͟a͟m͟p͟l͟e͟: Suppose you need to verify if someone has been adhering to budget constraints during business trips.  
 
Instead of directly asking about their spending, you could mention how challenging you find it to stay within budget limits during your travels and inquire if they have found a good strategy to manage expenses. 
 
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗠𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 – "𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴" 
 
O͟b͟j͟e͟c͟t͟i͟v͟e͟: Extract additional information with a final, seemingly afterthought question. 
 
H͟o͟w͟ ͟t͟o͟ ͟I͟m͟p͟l͟e͟m͟e͟n͟t͟: Just as the conversation is about to end and the person’s guards is down, 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.  
 
This is often when people give away more than they intend to because they’re eager to conclude the interaction. 
 
E͟x͟a͟m͟p͟l͟e͟:͟ As you’re wrapping up, you might say, "Oh, by the way, I was curious about who else was involved in that project.  
 
Could you remind me?"  
 
This spontaneous query can unexpectedly lead to important revelations.

In a recent survey by Wolters Kluwer, 38% indicated that Domain III presents the biggest challenge for internal auditors when implementing the Global Internal Audit Standards. 
 
I would like to offer some suggestions on how to address this crucial area, specifically in governing the internal audit function. 
 
I would customize the Three Lines Model to fit the circumstances and objectives of your organization and use it as a framework for discussions with the board and senior management. 
 
The essence of the discussion is to deliberate on the responsibilities and conditions necessary for a successful internal audit function. 
 
The main points include focusing on creating and maintaining the effectiveness and independence of the internal audit function. 
 
The emphasis is that the success of the company’s objectives can only be achieved through a strong partnership between the board, management, and internal audit. 
 
The Three Lines Model offers a principles-based approach to governance, promoting clarity, effectiveness, and alignment with stakeholder interests.  
 
It supports organizations in navigating complexities by defining clear roles and responsibilities across governance, risk management, and assurance functions.

In the exit meeting, we are often asked by management how other departments handle the findings. 
 
If you can find an answer and even establish connections with other departments, then you have scored big with management.  
 
The start of a good relationship, not seen as the checker but as the one actively helping management. 
 
As internal auditors, we have insight into all operations and great insight into good or best practices. 
 
In my previous role, we created a 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲 to collect all the best practices. 
 
I find that collecting and sharing best practices with the group is one of the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 in internal auditing.  
 
Not to mention how grateful management is to receive and see other practices.

Many wonder why I engage in multiple activities simultaneously these days. 
 
My reasoning is straightforward.  
 
I aim to create options or alternatives for myself, enabling future choices. 
 
In Finance, options represent a potentially high value for a minimal and speculative investment.  
 
Currently, it feels as though I am purchasing call options 📈. 
 
The value of an option is influenced by factors known as the Greeks.   
 
Two key factors are Theta, representing time, and Vega, representing volatility. 
 
In practical terms, this means the more time and potential outcomes (volatility) my ventures have, the higher their value. 
 
Having more alternatives enriches your life by expanding your choices.

There is always a risk of layoff due to downsizing if you are employed.  
 
If you are affected by this, you may experience severe psychological distress. 
 
As a young man, I understood this.  
 
The fear of no longer being needed motivated me to take a course on resilience.  
 
What I learned was gold, and I will give a real-life example. 
 
During a serious crisis in our company, I had to go to my manager and discuss cost-cutting.  
 
Believe me, it was a difficult phase in my life. 
 
I told management that as internal auditors, we could help save eight times our internal costs. 
 
This allowed me to block the first few bullets.  
 
Later, my manager asked us to participate in the cost-reduction program. 
 
Over the years, we had saved 40 times our costs to the company. 
 
Besides the savings, this gained high recognition in the company that internal audit is more than reviewing controls but can actively advise on cost savings through working capital reduction and better vendor negotiations. 
 
The most important thing I learned at a young age was to see difficult times as an opportunity and to show your value to the company so that you don't become part of the wave of layoffs.

It takes several years to reach the status of a trusted advisor.  
 
Reflecting on my experience and thinking about what might be good advice to gain the trust of management and the board more quickly, I would give the following signpost: ⏩ 
 
It should be a given that you are mastering your craft as an internal auditor. 
 
Make it 𝗰𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 what your 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 is to the 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.  
 
𝗜𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

With this attitude, you have clarified the situation of your role and laid a foundation for future relationships. 
 
💡𝗕𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: Sometimes it takes fortunate circumstances and outcomes. 
 
Our internal audit department has significantly improved its image through various circumstances.  
 
In one case, we were able to solve a major fraud case, and in the second case, significant cost savings were identified and realized.

What I really appreciate about the internal audit profession is the 𝘂𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 for on-the-job and off-the-job training. 
 
𝗢𝗳𝗳-𝘁𝗵𝗲-𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲'𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀:

However, the best learning method, which I also shared with my son who will be graduating in a few months, is 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲—𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻. 
 
🎓 This relates to the 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁é𝗴é 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁: teaching someone else is the best way to learn, according to research. 
 
When you learn something with the intention of teaching it, you understand it more deeply.  
 
🏆 Teaching also counts as CPE to meet the Standards. 
 
I am experiencing this right now as I prepare to give a seminar 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗜𝗔 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 on one of the most complicated topics: 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻.

Can you be yourself in the corporate world and stay true to your values and beliefs? 
 
Yes, you can, and I have experienced that. 
 
However, the conditions were unique.  
 
Top management were the owners and therefore entrepreneurial, value-driven, and they promoted authenticity.  
 
Everyone had the chance to contribute their strengths.  
 
I didn't have to play a role; I could be the person I wanted to be with all my strength and abilities.  
 
I was the internal auditor and tried to advise and support the company in the areas of risk management.  
 
That was highly appreciated. 
 
I think these were unique circumstances in which I was lucky. 
 
Later, there was a new management, and that no longer worked; people had to play a role and wear masks. 
 
Suffocated by endless formalisations, I decided to explore new ventures to be myself again.

𝗣͟𝗿͟𝗼͟𝗯͟𝗹͟𝗲͟𝗺͟ ͟𝗶͟𝗻͟ ͟𝗛͟𝗶͟𝗲͟𝗿͟𝗮͟𝗿͟𝗰͟𝗵͟𝗶͟𝗰͟𝗮͟𝗹͟ ͟𝗢͟𝗿͟𝗴͟𝗮͟𝗻͟𝗶͟𝘇͟𝗮͟𝘁͟𝗶͟𝗼͟𝗻͟𝘀͟:͟ 
 
In organizations with many levels of hierarchy, it often becomes evident that employees are primarily motivated to climb the ladder as quickly and as far as possible.  
 
This pursuit is driven by the perception that higher positions come with significant rewards, including more money, bonuses, recognition, and even a corner office.  
 
However, such positions are limited, and the competition intensifies the higher one ascends. 
 
𝗖͟𝗼͟𝗻͟𝘀͟𝗲͟𝗾͟𝘂͟𝗲͟𝗻͟𝗰͟𝗲͟𝘀͟ ͟𝗼͟𝗳͟ ͟𝗧͟𝗿͟𝗮͟𝗱͟𝗶͟𝘁͟𝗶͟𝗼͟𝗻͟𝗮͟𝗹͟ ͟𝗛͟𝗶͟𝗲͟𝗿͟𝗮͟𝗿͟𝗰͟𝗵͟𝗶͟𝗲͟𝘀͟:͟ 
 
This hierarchical structure can lead to aggressive competition. Employees may only look out for themselves, resulting in a work environment filled with mistrust.  
 
𝗜͟𝗻͟𝘁͟𝗿͟𝗼͟𝗱͟𝘂͟𝗰͟𝗶͟𝗻͟𝗴͟ ͟𝗮͟𝗻͟ ͟𝗔͟𝗹͟𝘁͟𝗲͟𝗿͟𝗻͟𝗮͟𝘁͟𝗶͟𝘃͟𝗲͟ ͟𝗠͟𝗼͟𝗱͟𝗲͟𝗹͟:͟ 
 
To address these issues, I helped establish an alternative organizational model within a larger team.  
 
In this model, individuals are rewarded based on their contributions to the company, emphasizing skills acquired in their roles. This system allows for multiple lead auditors, provided they meet certain levels of maturity and competence.

The focus of our model is on mastering one's role and work. Excelling in your job leads to natural recognition and rewards from the employer.  
 
The goal is to empower each employee to 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱.

This approach fosters a healthier work atmosphere, enhanced teamwork, and higher levels of commitment, as every team member 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲. 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️🦸

𝗔 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱 
 
As a teenager, I engaged heavily in team sports and participated in numerous competitions. 
 
From those experiences, I quickly learned the significance of team spirit and the magic of well-functioning teams. 
 
We may not have always had the best individual players, but as underdogs, we managed to defeat the favorites. 
 
Later, as a Chief Audit Executive managing over 45 employees, I aimed to demonstrate to our team that this was not merely an empty phrase, but a crucial element for success. 
 
I introduced our staff to the concept of the 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮 in game theory.  
 
The key takeaway is that everyone can influence the outcome.  
 
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀.  
 
Conversely, if someone chooses not to cooperate, it leads to unfavorable results. 
 
What does this have to do with the title?  
 
"𝗔 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱" refers to a film about the life of the brilliant mathematician and Nobel Prize winner, 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘀𝗵. 
 
The Nash equilibrium, a central idea in game theory, is a potent concept that sheds light on the dynamics of 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 and remains relevant in various contexts today.
