I had an interesting convo with a friend job hunting.

Mentioning the market is tough. 

That is certainly true for many industries.

I would also argue that the old playbook is dead.

The numbers game can cause many people to lose momentum or burn out.

Or worse yet get jaded.

I’ve seen LinkedIn posts speaking to people that have sent thousands of job applications.

With limited responses.

The below strategy might be a way to break tunnel vision.

I regularly speak to strangers using this back channel strategy.

And used it to get some interviews when I was evaluating that market.

This strategy is roughly verified by people like Austin Belcak.

Though his solutions might differ as far as details.


Send a well written cold email to a contact at the company that:
>Asks a provocative question (Credit to Jeff Molander) that invites conversation.
>Is value driven or speaks to doing market research/networking.
>Mentions a shared community or passion for your field.

If your email has value, community and soul - you are more likely to get a response.

Don't forget to follow up as people are busy.

Be mindful your vibe exudes confidence.

Even if you are going through a tough stretch.

The new playbook is about building back channel relationships.

And showing you are passionate+plugged into the community.

It is in people’s nature to be herd creatures.

People have a 6th sense for passion.

And they gravitate towards people that love their fields.

The old playbook of “set it and forget it” is dead.

That is a surefire way to see limited growth.

I regularly audit Google Ads accounts.

These are the common issues I see:

→ Lack of imagination and TLC:
-Founders without a technical marketing background have a sixth sense for this.
-Brands simply don’t see how much their Google Ads can be scaled.
-Due to tunnel vision and working with lackluster agencies.
-Many brands underestimate keyword/audience research for Non-Brand and PMax.

→Lack of proactive testing of copy, content, etc..
-Testing ideally weekly changes is huge.
-This helps you stay ahead of competitors.
-And continuously improve results. 
-I’ve seen change histories show a lack of regular tests.

→No framework to create and test landing pages fast:
-Many brands are sleeping on this.
-Creating landing pages should not spark an existential crisis.
-They send traffic to homepages+PDP's vs. dedicated landing pages.
-And wonder why conversion rates are nothing to write home about.

→Not following “must have” best practices to a “t”:
-Using a clear and solid campaign structure.
-That often includes broad match+solid audiences.

→Scaling what works:
-Often your best performers can be scaled.

→Pause the “gunk” that doesn’t work:
-Look at campaigns/keywords last 30-60 days 
-Identify segments with lots of spend and little revenue.

→Focusing on what moves the needle:
-It's very easy to get "distracted" by a complex account.
-The 80/20 principle is not a marketing gimmick.
-But a legit way to save time.

These types of learnings helped me build foundational world-class growth engines for multiple emerging brands that became household names.

I've spoken to and audited multiple brands under $1M/month.

Here are the common patterns that I observed for brands that are "stuck".

1. Not focusing on growing conversion rates:
→ The simplest mechanism is website and landing page testing.
→The biggest blockers for the above: Having clear direction on what to test, and an easy way to get tests to market.

2. Not understanding continuous market research:
→I think the term "market research" can be an ego hit as it implies product market fit. That is a limiting belief.
→That couldn't be further from the truth. Continuous market research helps you evolve both on the product+marketing side. And fine tune product-channel fit for channels like Meta. 
→It can be as simple as emailing your list - and offering a $10 Amazon gift card for a quick chat. Document things like common objections to a purchase and common problems your product solves.

3. Lack of imagination:
→Paid media channels like Google+Meta Ads are often underestimated in their potential for scalability.
→Same goes for creating incremental revenue streams in channels like email marketing and TikTok Shop.

These types of learnings helped build foundational world-class growth engines for multiple emerging brands that became household names.

What are some ways to test a DTC brand's landing page?

I speak to DTC founders and brands every week.

And I'm always humbled by the market research I collect.

Here are some of the common denominators I've learned:
-Most brands have some type of clear vision for the year and a big "problem" they are trying to solve.
-Not every brand is trying to grow revenue. Some brands are more focused on funding, product, supply chain or infrastructure. 
-Profitability is a speed bump for many revenue ranges. Both for the brands as a whole and for the DTC/ecom umbrella.
-Many brands see challenges or speed bumps with channels like Google+Meta.

Having said that here is how I can help for brands looking to break growth plateaus:
-Have you ever seen Pulp Fiction and seen “the Wolf”.
-He knows exactly what to do and what to look for to solve problems.
-That's the key to real growth.
-Distilling growth into a handful of clear success actions and processes.
-This usually involves "building" something ranging from systems to create landing pages or new ad concepts fast.

People weeks away from losing their homes after being let go.

Getting jaded not getting responses to job apps or emails.

I believe there is a silver lining to this great shift occurring.

Employees, freelancers and contractors are reclaiming their power.

Even if at times they feel powerless.

I believe this “great shift” is a case study of human consciousness.

I’ve had multiple times in my life where I felt powerless.

Times where I thought I would “lose everything”.

But I always came out the other side stronger.

-There are an infinite number of ways to win.

And I am no expert on the job market but can say:
