The past year has been a constant uptrend for GrowthTrigger.

But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. 🫠

On one hand, we've been out there crushing it for our clients, and becoming:

1. The fastest-growing retention marketing partner in Finland ✔
2. The best and only retention marketing partner for telehealth brands ✔

On the other hand, this past week has been a reminder of the inevitable downsides of scaling up a service business:

1. We got one client initiating a chargeback of the full email marketing automation setup we built for them months earlier... ❌ (after blocking me on all communication channels)

2. And another one breaching the terms of the contract and refusing to pay for the work we had already started to fulfil. ❌

In both cases, we've already paid our team for the work, and ended up taking a +€10k loss for the business.

Our service results and client satisfaction have always been top-notch, but seems like you can't fully avoid running into the wrong people while doing business.

What you can do is to move forward and take the responsibility, for instance:

→ I should have noticed the red flags earlier before signing.
→ I should not have initiated work before the money is in the account.

I'm just too used to trusting that people are honest, but the world is a cold place. ;)

Luckily, we're now in a position where I'd rather say "bye" 👋, even if it meant losing 10s of thousands of €.

This broken email broke revenue records for our telehealth client:

A couple weeks ago, we sent a sales email to 40k subscribers.

Everything looked normal in customer.io preview...

But Gmail stacked the whole thing into one vertical mess without line breaks.

It looked broken.

Instead of trying to cover it up, we turned it into a story.

A couple hours later, we sent a plain-text email "from the team", apologizing for the formatting issue and “𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠” 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥 like a real human would.

Same offer. Same list. Just a different wrapper.

The result:
→ Highest open rate ever for a full list promo
→ Highest click rate ever for a full list promo
→ Most conversions ever for a full list promo

The “mistake” turned into one of the most profitable campaign offers we’ve ever sent.

But only because we acted fast, and found a creative way to turn a negative experience around.

The takeaway:

Provide education to help them make the most out of the treatment.
Explain how it works, what it does to your body, and any potential side effects.

3️⃣ 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲
Introduce the first real success story from a satisfied patient.
Talk about before state, the challenges, and how everything changed.

P.S. Offer chance to quickly contact support in every email to proactively reduce ticket volume + anxiety.

P.P.S. Don't forget your transactional post purchase emails (receipt, order/shipping confirmation...). These have the highest open/click rates so you don't want to waste that real estate.

Retention starts earlier than you think. Don't neglect your patient onboarding flow.

Note to self:

Don’t let external conditions define your state of mind.

Last week was extremely busy and challenging. Lots of biz headaches, etc.
This week, most of those problems are solved and things look bright.
The interesting part: nothing changed either week.

I still work, eat, train, sleep.

Had to sacrifice a bit of sleep and training but the big picture is identical.

The only thing that really changed is how I feel.

Last week I felt stressed and overworked.
This week, good and like I’m back in control.

Need to keep reminding myself more often: how I feel is a choice.

Are your perfectly "personalized" emails actually killing your results?

Here’s the thing:

Sending to a tiny, hyper-personalized segment rarely beats hitting your broad audience of engaged subscribers.

Let's say you're sending a perfectly tailored email for a 5X smaller segment.
Yes, it will have a higher conversion rate, but I bet it won't be converting 5X better.
And that's what you'd need to make the hyper personalization "worth it".

So what to do then?

Focus first on sending campaigns to everyone who’s actively engaging with your emails:

→ Opens, clicks, and recent interactions.

Cause the more people you can reach with your emails without hurting your deliverability, the bigger the revenue potential.

Now, maybe in the near future, AI will make personalization at scale feasible.

But until then, maximize the impact of your campaigns by sending the majority of your campaigns to a broad audience.
