A bit about me: 

I grew up in Berlin, loving nature, and struggled with my mental health. 

A psychologist changed my life as I know it today.

I Lost myself in the teens because nature was not cool. 

After High School, I went to live in Australia for a year & rediscovered myself. Nature is awesome. 

Studied business to learn how to make companies a force for good, rather than what they are now. 

Lived abroad in 6 countries to understand us humans better & discover more wild places. 

Worked in E-Commerce, Mobility, Non-profit, hospitality, and tourism, to positively change those industries. 

Quarter life crisis: triggered by eco-anxiety

Created some side hustles to tip-toe into entrepreneurship. 

Learned what real crisis management is by becoming a leader of a team in a tourism company, while Covid broke out. 

Getting as many team members & local partners sanely through this crisis. 

Decided in 2022 to quit my job and go all in on Wildya.

Next stop Berlin: Do we soon have 20,000 elephants roaming in Germany? 

What sounds like a joke is a proposal from Botswana's president that perfectly shows our current biodiversity dilemma. 

The Global North outsourced biodiversity yet is unwilling to pay for it. 


🐘 What happened? 

President Mokgweetsi Masisi has threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany amid a dispute over the import of hunting trophies. 

Germany is one of the biggest importers of hunting trophies. 

Trophy hunting can be, in unique cases a finance stream, how to get money for nature conservation. 

(I wrote a detailed post on that matter, which you can find in the comments)


🧐 Why does he want to get rid of the elephants? 

Botswana is a safe haven for elephants and has 1/3 of Africa's entire elephant population. 

Roughly 130,000.

Botswana doesn't have fences, so elephants cause damage to property, eat crops, and can trample people.


☝️ Can't we just relocate them? 

Yes and no. 

Yes, we can and it is incredibly expensive because those beauties are heavy and big, so relocating them is quite a mission. 

No, the problem with elephants is that they used to roam the entire African continent; by nature, they were covering huge distances. 

You might pay for the relocation only for them to walk somewhere else. 

Yet, elephant populations in Africa are still far from historical numbers, so we don't have enough. We just have very heavily concentrated populations. 


🌍 Global North & South Dilemma

In the Global North, we destroyed our nature for "progress" and still struggle to co-exist with nature. 

E.g. Wolves getting culled in Switzerland, Nature restoration Law blocked, Brown Bears are blocked off from their historical range etc. 

Yet we dictate how the Global South, which guards biodiversity, has to live with these animals.

This quote of the president hit is perfect: "It is very easy to sit in Berlin and have an opinion about our affairs in Botswana. We are paying the price for preserving these animals for the world,"

Instead of being rewarded the Global South is paying the price for protecting our last wild places. 

We all benefit from a thriving natural world, so we should also be willing to pay for it. 


💪 3 Actions you can take:

1. Rewild Europe. Help us to relearn to co-exist by supporting NGOs like Rewilding Europe. 

2. Support innovation. A living elephant should always be more valuable than a dead one, help innovative projects that create new finance streams for nature, like Rebalance Earth

3. Open mind. Listen and come with an open mind, when meeting or reading about the challenges of people that live side by side with wildlife. 


Let's keep the elephants where they belong and help countries like Botswana to benefit from guarding our collective treasure: the last pockets of real wilderness.

My wildest dream is others' biggest nightmare

I am working 24/7 to create a wilder world.

I can't shut up about it. 


🐼 But a wilder world doesn't just mean pandas, deer & dolphins.

Wilder world also means wolves, spiders, snakes & co.

And that's where we run into the nightmares of some folks.

Wolves in the woods
Snakes in the garden 
Spiders in apartments
Sharks on the coastlines


But here is the harsh truth: we need those.

They are crucial for the web of life.

We can't cherry-pick those species that are cute & fluffy.

👉 A wilder world means we must relearn to co-exist with wildlife.


Don't get me wrong, you don't have to fall in love with spiders.

But I ask you to respect & protect them.

Respect that these animals have been here long before us & that they play a crucial role in nature.


For us nature lovers, it is crucial to understand that what we love creates fear for others.

Only when we address & help them to overcome them will they become allies in our mission to make the world wilder.

And if we need one thing, it's more allies.

Humanity in a nutshell: We just found a new species 🎉 It's endangered...🤬

A giant new anaconda species has been found in Ecuador. 

But her kind is at risk of going extinct due to deforestation, human hunting & pollution from oil spills. 


💡 Why does it matter? 
- As apex predators, anacondas play a vital ecological role in regulating fish, rodents, deer & co populations
- We still find new species all the time, but our human pressure can cause extinctions before we even discover a species


🐍 What species was found? 
A northern green anaconda living in the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador. 

The biggest individual they found was 6.3 meters, but the Waorani (indigenous group) guides say there are far bigger individuals out there. 

Which could make it the largest snake in the world. 


👀 Who found it? 
The Waorani lived side by side with the snake since the beginning. So clearly them. 

But they invited Bryan Fry, a National Geographic Explorer & biologist at the University of Queensland, to check if it's a new species. 


☝️ What makes this anaconda species so special? 
It's a sacred animal for the Waorani. 

+ They differ genetically by 5.5% from the widespread green anaconda.

For context, the genetic difference between humans and apes is about 2%.


🤦‍♂️ Why is it endangered? 
The Waorani territory faces threats from:
- roads
- mining
- oil exploration
- climate change
- slash-and-burn agriculture

Due to their limited range, they are even more vulnerable. 


💪 What can YOU do to make a difference? 
Support Amazon Frontlines (founded by nature hero Nemonte Nenquimo) with your money, voice or skills. 


The story of the northern green anaconda is a great example of letting indigenous guide us. 

They lived in harmony with the anacondas until the global north showed up & started to destroy everything. 

We have to reflect on our ways of life. Otherwise, species can go extinct before we ever find them.

So this happened...

🎉 Next milestone: Standing on a stage to talk about wildlife & what we can learn from them. 

Elena Doms & Katja kicked my butt because I didn't mention this last week. So here we go. 


At ChangeNOW, Wildya was selected as one of the 12 favorite solutions out of 170 impact start-ups.

Meaning we had the privilege to pitch in front of a greater audience & bigger stage. 

If someone had told me 1 year ago when I started this ecopreneurship journey, I would have called them nuts. 


This journey is much harder than I expected: sleepless nights, self-doubts, setbacks, mental health challenges, dead ends, etc. 

Something that they don't write in all those glory founder books. 


So I soaked up these few minutes of joy. 

No matter what will happen next, no one can take that away.

Apparently, this idea isn't crazy. 

Others start to see the value in it, too. 

So we will keep pushing for a world full of wildlife & happy people. 


Last but not least.

People only see one person on stage, but this was far from being a one-man show.

"You can choose to be ecologically sustainable & not be economically sustainable." Douglas Tompkins 

Watching the powerful story of Kris & Douglas Tompkins reminded me that economic profitability is not everything.  

They saw the creation of national parks as paying rent to nature.  

Because there is no economy of a dead planet. 


Yet economic profitability has become the default decision maker.

The one number we constantly optimize for. 
 
This brought some people prosperity, but for what price? 


Let's take a concrete example of Wolves 

🤑 Economically profitable 
- bringing them back into areas where they became extinct costs money in transportation, rehabilitation, staff 
- local communities need to be made aware & educated because they have forgotten how to co-exist with them 
- there will be occasional situations where wolves will create economic damage (e.g. killing a sheep)
- so a hard sell on the first look

🐺 Ecologically profitable 
- the wolf is a keystone species, so without them, you can't recreate intact ecosystems 
- they guard the forests by keeping herbivores on the move 
- they keep populations healthy by hunting on the sick and old 
- & I could go on forever 


So what do we choose now? 

Ecological or economic profitability? 

We often chose the latter. 


Thereby shooting us in our own foot. 

Because if we maximize for ecological profitability, we will economically thrive in the long run as well. We just need to make up the initial costs. 

Why? 

Intact ecosystems deliver stronger ecosystem services like carbon storage, flood management, pollination, tourism etc. 

All services we benefit economically from. 


So what are we waiting for? 

Ecological profitable > economic profitable 

Let's optimize for a living planet than a balance sheet.

What is the root cause of the biodiversity crisis? 

In 2020, I had to decide how to tackle the biodiversity crisis. 

So I went down the rabbit hole to seek the root cause of all this destruction.


🫚 My research led me to the observation that the reason for all this is that we humans got disconnected from nature. 

After all, most of us live in cities, which have little nature in them. 

This disconnection led us to feel emotionless about nature. 

Making it easy for us to destroy. 


💡 So, to truly tackle the biodiversity crisis, we would need to reconnect people to nature. 

That is the root.

If we tackle the root, more nature-positive actions will follow, like redesigning agriculture, rethinking our consumption patterns, switching to green energy, relearning to co-exist etc.


So how do we do this? 

That's how Wildya got born.

Many enjoy a day off today, so why don't you grab that opportunity & get a bit of a nature dosis?

The Eco-Allies community is coming to life 

This week, Henrietta invited us to a bonfire chat to hear about her Safari Guide training and how it helped her with her purpose, mental well-being, and connection to nature. 

Before, we already had Nathan, who offered his skills and brought us a hypnotherapeutic meditation exercise to cope better with our eco-anxiety. 

Or David, who created a local chapter in Canada to start in-person meetups and connect with like-minded people. 


It's truly inspiring to see our community members shaping the community in their unique ways, each contribution adding a new dimension to our collective journey. 

Because that was the sole purpose of it:

Creating a community of people that want to transform their eco-anxiety into action, in which ever way possible. 

We all face the nature & climate crisis together, yet how we react differs greatly. 

We need to create various solutions so everyone can find something that works for them. 

The community members lead the way.
