A bit about me: 

I grew up in Berlin, loving nature, and struggled with my mental health. 

A psychologist changed my life as I know it today.

I Lost myself in the teens because nature was not cool. 

After High School, I went to live in Australia for a year & rediscovered myself. Nature is awesome. 

Studied business to learn how to make companies a force for good, rather than what they are now. 

Lived abroad in 6 countries to understand us humans better & discover more wild places. 

Worked in E-Commerce, Mobility, Non-profit, hospitality, and tourism, to positively change those industries. 

Quarter life crisis: triggered by eco-anxiety

Created some side hustles to tip-toe into entrepreneurship. 

Learned what real crisis management is by becoming a leader of a team in a tourism company, while Covid broke out. 

Getting as many team members & local partners sanely through this crisis. 

Decided in 2022 to quit my job and go all in on Wildya. 

2023.

Realized that biodiversity heroes struggle to finance their projects, created Wild Busines Mates.

Tourism gone wrong.

New lodge blocking great migration route.

This footage shows staff members chasing away wildebeest after a new lodge is built right in the path of the great migration in Kenya. 


🤔 Why the outrage? 

The great migration of around 2,5M wildbeest, zebras & gazelles is one of the most breathtaking wildlife spectacles of our planet. Crucial for the local ecosystem & people. 

Extensive new infrastructure & jeeps are now threatening the natural movement of this migration. 

Here in the clip, the wildebeest can't pass their usual way. And now have to find a new path. 

All added up, this puts immense pressure on these animals & thereby risks the existence of the great migration. 


🚨 The culprit?

I did some digging & from what I could find in the news, it seems to be the Ritz Carlton Lodge in the Maasai Mara. Can't know for sure, since the people in the video don't mention the name. 

Unfortunately, these scenes are not unique. In just 10 years, the number of accommodations there almost doubled. 


💪 What can you do about it?

1) Don't stay or go
Stay in places that boost local nature, not destroy it. Especially worth double-checking when you plan to stay in the wilderness. 

2) Book with professionals 
When planning a trip into an unknown wilderness, consult with some wildlife experts. They ensure your trip doesn't come at the cost of wildlife. e.g. for Africa with Alice Péretié. 

3) Shift your mind 
Yes, you deserve that break! But your trip should not sacrifice the magic you came to see. Otherwise, you will be one of the last to experience it. How can you ensure your trip has a net positive impact on the place you are visiting? 


Tourism done wrong, nature is exploited until the last penny. 

Tourism done right, nature thrives & we get a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 

Let's do better. 

P.S. What's your take? Should we build hotels in remote wilderness?

Only 10 species make 40% of entire wild land mammal biomass & why it’s a problem.

🦌 The 10 species are: 

12% White tailed deer 
8% Wild boar
6% African savanna elephant 
2% Eastern gray kangaroo
2% Mule deer 
2% Moose 
2% Red deer 
1,8% Roe deer 
1,8% Red kangaroo
1,4% Common Warthog

As reference: all carnivores (bears, tigers & co.) make only 3%!!!!


🚨 Why is it a problem: 

Nature is no dummy. It figured out a great self-sustaining system that runs smoothly for millions of years. 

The secret ingredient? Diversity. 

The more diverse the crew, the greater the service they provide & we benefit from: 

→ Store carbon 
→ Cycle nutrients
→ Prevent diseases 
→ Dispersing seeds 
→ Engineer ecosystems & co. 


🤓 Now this research found out that without human intervention:

a) Larger mammals would represent more of the total biomass
b) Deer, wild boar & co. wouldn't lift so much weight, if we wouldn't have eliminated their predators

But large mammals & carnivores are an inconvenience for us. 

So we got rid of them. 


💪 What YOU can do to bend the trend

1) Talk about it
This was news to me too. Let's talk more about what we lost in the past decades & how we get governments, citizens & companies to bend the trend. It all starts with an honest conversation. 

2) Rewild 
We need to bring back the wild. Not just the comfortable ones. Wolves, bears, lynx & co recreate balance. See how you can bring them back locally or support Rewilding Europe, Rewilding Britain, Tompkins Conservation & Global Rewilding Alliance co. 

3) Go plant-powered 
Yes, those 10 species represent 40% of the weight. But wild mammals in total only represent 2% of total land mammal biomass. The rest of the 98%? Us & our livestock. Switching to more veggies brings back the wild. 


We can be the first generation to tip the scale & leave the world wilder than we found it. 

Let's get to work.

How can I top that? 

And truth must be told: 

→ I gained weight 
→ I lost touch with my friends
→ I am right on the edge of burnout 
→ I haven't been surfing or much in nature
→ I didn't show up here as I would have liked
→ I struggle to find the balance between dad & ecopreneur

Even such beautiful moments come with a tradeoff. 


So I want to especially thank 6 women who got me through the hard parts & helped me to enjoy the beautiful parts. 

Because here on Linkedin & on stage you see me. 

But I wouldn't be there without them. 

Selfmade men/women don't exist.

This guy created a solution for how to engage a community & raise the money to do it. 

Meet Tom Constable, founder of the Grange Project. 

Together with his wife Chloe Constable, he bought a farm in 2023 to rewild the land & transform the surrounding farmland back to a nature oasis. 

But he quickly realized that such rewilding efforts require significant amounts of recurring financial support & that investments in nature are hard to get.

So Tom, on top of all his responsibilities as father, podcaster & rewilder, started to add extra night shifts to build a tool that would empower landowners and communities to gain access to new funding, in order to generate positive global impact. 

Platform Nature was born. 

This tool can be embedded on any website & is designed to be a fun way for supporters to sponsor segments of your restoration projects. 

No complex setup. 
No technical skills required. 
Start generating revenue in days.

Blew my mind when he showed it to me last week. 

It makes the impact nature ventures create so much more tangible + it helps to get the much-needed additional money in.

My reflection from our call last week? 

We need more Tom's in this world. 

People who refuse to give up & use everything they've got to build a wilder world. 

P.S. Is it also on your life bucket list to buy land to rewild it? Or am I alone?

What if gorillas had bank accounts? 

Kaja Wasik & Jonathan Ledgard just did it. 

Jonathan estimated that the financial value of the mountain gorilla population is nearly $1,4 billion or 10% of Rwanda's GDP. 

So what if gorillas would see some of this money? 

In a first transaction, a gorilla paid roughly $15 for a ranger to remove a poacher's snare.

This is called "Interspecies Money" & Kaja & Jonathan are pioneering it with their nature venture Tehanu.

💡 How it started: 

On his travels, Jonathan saw the same situation unfold wherever he went. People living in remarkable nature have to find ways to sustain their families. But in a capitalistic system, the chopped down forest, the bushmeat of wildlife & co. is more worth dead than alive. 

So he wanted to find a way how local people & species thrive together. 


💪 How it works: 

1) They evaluate the ecological role of the species & quantify the services it provides to its ecosystem & us. Helps to get people on board. 

2) They built a custom AI proxy of the species & even individuals of the species. That is trained on all the knowledge we have of the species, including often-ignored voices like rangers and local communities.

3) The AI creates tasks like planting trees, picking up trash, or monitoring for poachers. Serving the animal's needs & let humans complete them. 


💸 Where the money comes from: 

Right now, from already existing tourism or NGOs. But in the future, why the middlemen? We could pay gorillas directly. 


🦇 Where to go from here: 

Gorillas are only the start. Fruitbats, orangutan, elephants can follow. 

And sooner or later we might hopefully have a “Bank for Other Species”?

Skydiving beavers with parachutes from World War 2. 

Nope, this isn't A.I. 

In 1948, the Idaho Fish and Game Department decided to drop 76 beavers with parachutes into remote areas. 

But why? 

Due to the fur trade, the beaver population in the U.S. decreased from 10s of millions to only 100,000 in 1900. 

Habitats were suffering without their keystone species. 
 
Yet people who moved to Idaho began to complain about beavers and the floods they caused. 

The 76 beavers needed relocation. 

But taking the truck to remote areas was too stressful. 

Chances of success too low. 

So researcher Elmo Heter came up with the idea to use leftover parachutes from World War 2 to drop them into remote areas. 

76 out of 77 survived. 

Far better than any other relocation method at that time. 

Within months, the beavers restored their new homes. 


So what's there to learn for us today? 

People going out of their way to save a single life. 

The easy solution would have been to simply kill the beavers. 

But the department came up with an innovative approach to save them all. 

Showing us real courage & innovative thinking. 

We need more of both of them to build a wilder world.
