In 2017 right after I got married, I had this sinking feeling of uncertainty and panic.

After having spent all my life trying to become an engineer and working on building a career, I was shocked that I couldn’t see “What’s next”.

What was worse was that there was no one who could help me answer that either! 

Being a young engineer at work, I felt stuck. Living in a new city with no strong community, I felt stuck. Creatively, I didn’t even know where to begin.

So I spent the next 5 years answering that very question, WHAT’S NEXT? 

I answered it for myself and then for 200+ women in just 3 years.

It’s a loaded question, one that no one teaches you how to answer. There are hardly any specific books on it and there is no roadmap.

I know as an engineer yourself, you know the frustration of it all. From having a roadmap all your life to suddenly flying blind! 

My journey to finding this roadmap consisted of 267books, over $50k in coaching costs and endless nights of thinking. 

I DID ONE THING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING.  

I stopped waiting for someone to give me the roadmap. I started CREATING my own roadmap. I started getting crystal clear about what I wanted.  

During 27 years of following someone else’s roadmap, I made micro progress. 
 
Once I got clarity:  
→ I got promoted twice in one year without applying 
→ I gave a TEDx talk
→ I started my own coaching business 
→ I grew my business revenue to $200k
→ I served over 200 women and helped them find clarity in their careers too.

I MADE PROGRESS FASTER THAN BEFORE.  

What changed ? I found a repetitive & predictable method to answer what’s next. I took responsibility for my own career. I stopped relying on other people and started applying the Clarity Loop 6-step framework:

When I first met Deepthi, 
she was 100% sure she wouldn’t post on LI.

April 2023, I lost all hope that my business would work.

Neha applied to hundreds of jobs for over 6 months and didn’t get a single back.

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 we spent on shifting her perspective and shifting her focus to believing that she can get any job she sets her mind too.

𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸, we focused on helping her decide on the epic STEM goal that will energize her to work hard every day. She was crystal clear and very specific about what that goal would be. She figured out the exact roles that she wanted to focus on.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸, we jumped into the resume and how to make it such that she gets fast callbacks! We spent close to 3 hours reviewing every detail, and she spent over 11 hours in the background to make the resume exactly what it needed to be. So it can tell the story she wants to tell. We also updated her LI profile to match her brand-new resume.

𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸, we started interview preparation, and by this time, she had received 3 callbacks. 🤩

The perfect job took about 3 months to come around, but it was all worth it!

She interviewed with big companies like Apple, and she finally joined a startup that is aligned with her values.

She exceeded her goal of $70k, and most of all, she found her most confident self in the process, one who can do anything.

𝗗𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱..

Mentors are overrated! 

I am glad I learned this early in my career. 

Instead of chasing mentors, I looked for sponsors. 

People who will vouch for me in the rooms I am not in.

I got four promotions in less than eight years in a traditional manufacturing company only because I had a wide network of sponsors.

Sponsors are usually cross-functional managers, 
team leads from your stretch projects, 
and one key stakeholder from senior management. 

In my case, my dotted-line manager, my old manager, 
the VP of the parallel department, and my recently promoted friend who helped me secure my first promotion to management. 

Sponsors are important because 
✅ they attend calibration meetings, 
✅ review promotions, and 
✅ can influence career decisions. 

If you can’t build a sponsor network, you can’t succeed in corporations. 

So, ditch mentors and start to find sponsors.

How I did it all & then some w/o burning out.

In 2020, I was working a full-time job.

Building my business at night

And dreaming of TEDx every day.

By the end of 2020, I had it all!

It was the biggest year of my life.

Here are 3 things I did to pull it off!!

1. 𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆.

Everything little thing made it to my calendar. 

No room for wasting time or getting distracted. 

I focused solely on maximizing efficiency.

2. 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 

When I heard a NO from prospective clients, I never let it get to me.

I time-boxed my disappointment and kept going.

Dwelling in disappointment is the biggest waste of time.

I realized it early on that the same time can be used to moving the needle forward.

3. 𝗜 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗱. 

Ever since I started a business, I have had a coach.

In 2020, I had 3 of them, which accelerated my growth. 

I didn’t just get coaches, but I listened to them intently. 

I didn’t shift responsibility to them but collaborated with them for epic success.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆. 

Lots of money.💰💰💰

The more money you make or save the farther you will go.

Next time you look at your goals, 
make sure to advocate for high dollar projects.

Once you get them, work to deliver 30% more than commitment 
& watch yourself turn into a corporate queen👸🏽

I make them write each story in detail. 

What happened, when, where, how, and what was their impact? 

Knowing this helps us narrow down the roles they can work towards,
And it gives them confidence that they can do tough jobs. 

This memory jogging exercise helps increase their confidence almost instantly.

A blank document and start writing.

Then start by not taking it personally.

Lots of work conflicts or differences are much easier to solve once we stop taking them personally. 

What if their passive aggression had nothing to do with you.

Mostly hurt people hurt people. 

So assume they are going through something much worse.

Then keep things super professional and communicate everything in writing. 

If you have a record of their constant lack of support, 
you can then escalate things to HR. 

But if they are responding on email, then you are good to go. 

Let people deal with their mess, and you ficus on performing at the highest level.

Process > People is the only way to succeed in corporate life.

Yes, the dreaded work conflict that is hard to understand, de-escalate, and maneuver out of.

Trust me! I'm a fun person.😬🤭

But I've had my fair share of issues with toxic environments and everyday quarrels per different opinions, personalities, cultures, and perspectives with team members, management and cross-functional colleagues.

Still, no matter what the conflict, I have always had a way to stop, analyze, mediate, and de-escalate these issues to total resolution, thus moving the project forward.

As STEM women, we are constantly surrounded my dominant opinions, harsh dynamics and extreme work environments that can make anyone loose their marbles!

By trying not to "𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮" for our team, we tend to loose our voice to accommodate any ebb and flow that seems not going in our favor.

I am so proud of you for trying to be present and continue with your work!

I know how hard it is to make that first step in realizing there is a problem and start heading towards a resolution.

The scariest thing is to START after you've realized there IS a problem.

What do you do when you realized this? How do you address it? What techniques exist on handling conflict? How do we listen and strategize to find an outcome together? What do we do if it's too escalated? Is the conflict ingrained in the work culture or no? What type of conflict is there? Wait... there are different Types? Do we have allies? 

It is extremely noble of you to be so empathetic about the team's needs so that they can get along in tension ridden meetings, but let's see if we can work on facing the conflict with confidence so that we can come to a solution that works for you AND your team, yes?
