Study Protocol Execution: Implement research protocols, including participant recruitment, informed consent, and data collection, while adhering to ethical guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Patient Care: Provide comprehensive clinical care to research participants, including physical assessments, medical histories, and monitoring of adverse events.

Provided care for 2250+ patients (outpatient, inpatient, intensive care unit, emergency room, operating room) in virtual and in-person environments. 

Served as first and/or second assist in 50+  general, oncologic, neurologic, obstetric, gynecologic,  orthopedic, and urologic surgical cases for a total of more than 200 hours assisting in the operating room. 

Assisted in pre-, intra- and post- operative care, urgent and emergent care, sepsis screening, and rapid response in cardiopulmonary arrests. Performed history and physicals, incision and drainage, wound repair and closure, drain management, external jugular vein cannulations, and point-of-care ultrasound. Additionally, demonstrated proper technique for intubation, central line placement, lumbar puncture, obtainment and interpretation of an ABG, thoracentesis and paracentesis.

My oldest daughter and I have been at odds with each other for what seems like the entirety of her 23 years.

As she prepares to finish her undergrad (math & physics from a university halfway around the world 🤯 ), 

I felt a deep desire to make amends. 

I planned a trip. 

I was filled with doubt leading up to it and was totally, completely convinced the effort would be entirely in vain (and would likely make things worse)... 

But I couldn't let it go. 

Instead, the result was: 

☀ We spoke honestly and respectfully - with love. 
☀ We engaged to understand, not just to be understood.
☀ We communicated without raised voices, hurt feelings or judgement.   

We are closer now than we've ever been and are moving forward with grace.

I couldn't have done this 3 years ago - not without the influence and growth that has come from this community and the friendships formed on this platform (and then later in real life) 

The situation reminds me that: 

-  All things are possible.  
-  Doing the 'right' thing is worth the effort.
-  Authenticity > "What you think they want to hear" - 100% of the time.

And despite popular belief, the course of action pursued is not likely to be "let's just sew it back on" 

To add insult to injury (pun intended), the person making the call is a young doctor who graduated 2 weeks ago & is horrified and finding this out for the first time. 

Choose wisely.

The struggle is real, but you are appreciated.

Confession:  I wake up at 4am most mornings, tip-toe down the hall & hide in my office to work on what is quickly becoming the first draft...  of my first book.  

Over the past few months I've learned that authorship is SUPER similar to every other BIG life pursuit in 3 ways:  

▶ Collaboration is key 

Help (and content) are everywhere. 

Engaging with the outside world on topics that move my soul -  generates momentum. 

▶ Authenticity matters 

Imitating others or attempting to "people please" results in an output that no one will ever want.  

When I self-censor, the work sucks.  

This seems universal.
 
▶ Success is the result of small moves over time

The ability to do ordinary things with extraordinary consistency is the difference between average and exceptional.  

I've just never been that good at anything out of the box, but I've kicked butt in several areas of life by just showing the f* up and failing until it works. 

Book writing seems to be following the same pattern.

Working in clinical medicine is more painful than ever & 2025 is coming in hot. 

I don't know how this prediction will age, but I suspect well.

There's something special about being in a warm climate where 'appropriate' takes on a different meaning.

Not sure how to feel about this...

Please don't unfriend me on Facebook... (just kidding - I don't have Facebook), but...  "The Hard Thing About Hard Things" was SO so boring.   

I powered through the dense, the technical & the abstract for almost 8 hours, because the unique wisdom packed into the details was still totally worth it.

My biggest take away?

▶  None of us really know what we're doing... including CEOs.  

▶  The best leaders are just crazy enough to imagine a better future and brave enough to show up fail until they win.
