I thought I was a failure.

At the age of 18, I went to check the JEE results with my father on our scooter.
I went with high hopes.
Was left with none.

I did not clear it.

At the age of 24, I dropped out of my PhD program in the US.
Came back to India, not knowing what to do next.
I had let down everyone, including myself.

At the age of 29, I quit my consulting job to join a startup.
I was fired after a year.

However, more than a decade later, I have realised that over time, everything falls into place.

That insecurity of not making money.
That guilt of probably letting your parents down.
That fear of never being happy in your career.

Over time, every failure passes away.

ONLY if you reflect on it.
ONLY if you ask yourself: Why did it happen?
ONLY if you change the way you do things.

Because we will all fail.
That is inevitable.

But few of us will win in life.
That will happen through reflection.

If I can do it, so can you.

“I don’t have time!”

When people say this, what they are essentially saying is that they do not have energy.
But what kind of energy are they lacking?

There are 4 kinds:

Physical energy:
- Do you get a good night’s sleep?
- Do you have a good diet and do you eat on time?
- Do you maintain an active lifestyle?

Emotional energy:
- Do you have self-confidence?
- Do you talk positively to yourself?

Mental energy:
- Are you creative?
- Are you optimistic?

Spiritual energy:
- Do you have integrity and commitment?
- Are you honest?

If you eat junk, sleep late, and lie to yourself that you will fix it tomorrow,
It doesn't matter how well you have scheduled yourself for the next day.
Your day will be lousy!

It isn't about managing time.
It has always been about managing your energy!

If you have written such a cold email for a job/opportunity, here is why it WON’T work:

1. It is addressed to nobody.
Write to “Ankur” or “Mr. Warikoo”.
Write to a real person.

There are hundreds of copy-pasted emails that recruiters receive.
By addressing them properly, you give them the chance to connect to a real human being.

2. It has no homework done.

Which role are you interested in? Why?
Why do you feel this organisation is a good fit?

3. It could have been sent to anyone.

There is nothing personal, or specific in this email. 
It could have been sent to anyone. 

DON’T make that mistake!

Here is a better way to draft the email:

“Dear warikoo (because I know you like your last name more than your first name)

I am so excited to write to you.
The intent of this email is to check if you have internship opportunities for a video editor such as me, in the team.

I am a self-taught video editor and have been editing for 4+ years now. 

After following your work for 2+ years now, I feel I have both the experience and an understanding of your content, to be able to contribute meaningfully.

I see you rarely do videos on LinkedIn — and that is where I think I can help.

Here are 2 sample videos I have made for you to show what I am capable of.

Do you think this was good enough for me to get some time with you? Eagerly waiting for it.

Thank you so much :)”

Do the work for them in advance.
Make it difficult for them to say no!

Their foundational trait is they have less ego. They don't talk about being a high performer. No. They quietly act like it and don't expect awards.

If you suffer from overthinking, you need to know these 2 things:

1. You are not the only one.
We are all hardwired to think more about the bad than the good.

Some time back, we all were cavemen and women!
And at that point, the only thing that mattered was survival.

Each time we ventured out, we could be attacked by a wild animal, by members of another tribe, or even our tribe members who are jealous that you made it to IIT :)) 

So, our brains focused on ONLY ONE THING — alerting us of the danger.
Over millions of years, this has become a habit of the human mind.

While the dangers of wild animals have reduced, others still exist.

The danger of "Sharma ji ke ladke ko dekho" (Look at what Mr. Sharma’s son has achieved) is still there. 
The danger of being laughed at is still there.
The danger of being seen as a failure in society is still there.

2. Our mind focuses on possibilities. Not probabilities.

Is it possible that you will get hit by a bus today - YES!
Is it possible that you will be kidnapped - YES!
Is it possible that you will be fired - YES!

Just the possibility of an event is enough to trigger overthinking.

To stop overthinking, we need to consider probability.

Each time we step out, there is a possibility of getting hit by a bus.
But we still step out fearlessly, right? 
How come?

Because we have told our brain that the probability of it is low.

And how do we know that the probability is low?
Because we have witnessed that ourselves.

When YOU are convinced that the probability of the bad thing happening is low, your mind will automatically be convinced.
