Safety is personal to me. When you get run over by a car that loses control and mounts the kerb (May 2012), it’s tough not to become extremely passionate about keeping people safe!

But I also believe that safety is key to business performance: “Safetynomics”. It’s not just morally right to ensure safety, it makes financial sense too.

My business, Slip Safety Services, combines both:
a) on average, clients see a 57% reduction in slip accidents and injuries

Slip accidents are a relevant risk to 85% of businesses (The State Of Safety, 2022). They cause 300,000 A&E admissions and £1bn+ of insurance claims a year.

I’ve never visited a business that has no “slips, trips and falls” risk assessment, policies and procedures. We’re all trying our best.

But, RIDDOR rates have been flatlining at c.30% for the last 10+ years. Conclusion: the basics have got us as far as they can...

A Winter Risk Assessment is only as good as how it performs in the wet

✅ Hazard identified: wet entrance
✅ Risk assessed: slip potential
❌ Control applied: sign, mat, routine clean… and still slipping

In winter, identifying the hazard is the easy part.

Evaluating whether your controls still work when floors are colder, wetter and busier is where most systems quietly fail.

A control that looked fine in autumn but loses grip in December does not reduce risk.

It creates confidence where none should exist.

This is the winter trap:
Action ≠ effectiveness.

If the surface can’t maintain friction when it’s wet, the paperwork doesn’t matter.

So the real question isn’t:
“Do we have controls in place?”

It’s:
 “Have we checked if they still work in winter conditions?”

Winter slip prevention isn’t “react fast.” It’s “remove the hazard before anyone meets it.”

Every December, the same pattern shows up:
wet entrances, colder floors, slower drying, heavier footfall… and suddenly your “fine in summer” route becomes a slip lane.

People ask, “What do we do when someone slips?”

Better question: Why was the slip waiting there in the first place?

Signs and toolbox talks help behaviour.

But they do not change physics.

If the surface is low-grip when wet, you cannot train your way out of it.

You fix it with:

- targeted cleaning that restores friction

- the right treatment (where needed)

- pendulum testing so you have proof, not hope

When is a fall just a fall… and when is it someone’s fault?

A £100,000 claim was dismissed in court because the evidence didn’t hold up. But that doesn’t mean the hazard wasn’t real. 

The culprit was a misplaced chocolate truffle, but CCTV showed there was no contact between the shoe and the chocolate truffle before the fall.

This case leaves us with bigger questions:
🔸 Are our assumptions about safety based on visibility or verification?
🔸 Can something feel unsafe and still be legally safe?
🔸 And when should responsibility shift from individuals to systems?

We talk about slip risks a lot, but how do we separate chance from negligence?

That message mattered to me.

Because what changed wasn’t the environment.

It was clarity.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬.

This is the part of safety that’s often missed.

Not reducing risk, but reducing the mental load that comes with not being fully sure.

Safety isn’t only about policies or paperwork.

It’s about understanding what’s actually happening in your space, and being able to stand behind it.

So here’s the question I often come back to:

We solved ‘workplace safety’… then the workplace moved.
That’s the real challenge.

You can have world-class controls at HQ,

and a team member straining their back at a kitchen table.

You can have perfect ergonomics on-site, and someone working from a car seat because it’s “quiet.”

Remote work didn’t reduce risks.

It redistributed them.

Into homes. Cars. Spare rooms.

Places we’re responsible for, but can’t physically see.

And that’s uncomfortable.

Because you can’t audit what you can’t walk.

So the question becomes:

Are we updating our safety approach for a distributed world, or just hoping old systems work in new places?

Why Tiny Forces Lead to Big Failures?

Ever heard of the 𝗯𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁? A small change in conditions can trigger massive consequences.

🔬 A microscopic layer of water, thinner than a human hair, can reduce friction enough to cause a slip.
🏗 A tiny crack in a structure can grow into catastrophic failure over time.

🚀 The Challenger disaster happened because of a minor change in temperature affecting rubber seals.

In science, 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹. They compound, amplify, and escalate until they create an incident nobody saw coming.

In safety, 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 are just as powerful as marginal gains.

I once turned a terribly squashed lemon into lemonade.


Not in the inspirational-quote sense.

In the very real, uncomfortable sense.

In 2012, I was hit by a speeding car and ended up in the hospital with multiple broken bones.

At the time, I called it bad luck.

Over time, that explanation stopped making sense.

When you look closely at harm, patterns appear.

Signals get missed.

Assumptions go unchallenged.

That accident made me curious.

Curious enough to stop accepting “accidents happen” as an answer.
