Greetings! After encouragement from some friends at LinkedIn, as well as many other long-time friends and colleagues -- online and off -- I will be taking you on a rare and special journey for the month of April.
 
As I have teased -- across 100s of comments for the last year or so -- I am publishing a memoir about my life up to age 26, ending when I started a new chapter in my life, when I got together with my now-husband. (Volume 2 will be about the two of us, to be published at some future date.)
 
As I have also teased, 2024 marks my 20th anniversary on this platform. I joined in 2004 and, I have learned, I was apparently among the FIRST 500,000 MEMBERS of this community. There are now 1,000,000,000 MEMBERS.
 
There are many surprises in store. But. Here's a little taste of what you can expect:
 
1. Revealing -- even shocking -- personal stories.
 
Funny, moving, bizarre, and more, they will run the gamut from being offered a commission to West Point by a US Senator, to chatting with actor Paul Newman on my dorm room phone, to having a brother with one of the rarest diseases on Earth, to what it was like being a part-time runway model in 80s New York;
 
2. Business tales and lessons -- often of a different sort.
 
My education and my early career took me to some fascinating places, meeting all sorts of incredible people. For instance, I was a contract software trainer for Apple and had GE as a client for my tiny tech startup in the 80s, while I was working as a part-time personal shopper to the stars at Bloomingdale's;
 
3. LOTS of opinions.
 
I will cover anything I feel like, while trying to be useful, with a mix of intelligence, humor, and snark that -- if you know my comments -- you might expect; and
 
4. Details about my worklife -- today.
 
I leave so much out of my profile and my comments -- on purpose -- but I will start to fill in the blanks for you. All my roles, companies, projects, events at which I am speaking (two in April), a B School class where I am guest lecturing, my podcast, and more, more, more.  I’ll even share what I can of some of my confidential work with investors.
 
In short, I will let it ALL hang out.  For a month.  No holding back.  If you want to know anything about me -- my life and my work -- pay close attention in April. I may not have the time or the inclination to continue this afterward... we shall see.  I will number the posts 1-30, with a few bonuses
sprinkled in.

LinkedIn: In the Beginning, 2003-2004

Home Office. New York. Day.

TIM, a smart, funny, good-looking, and seasoned executive, sits at his desk. He sips his Starbucks iced venti skinny vanilla latte out of the most fashionable and hard-to-find travel mug. He launches Zoom on his laptop and begins to speak.

Gather 'round. I have a tale to tell... Once upon a time, there was a world without LinkedIn. It was a dark and terrible time, before all the heroic influencers of today. There was even a time before social media at all.

(Screams of terror.)

Hold each other tight, folks, don’t be scared! I will begin with my beginning, here on LinkedIn.

(Audible sighs of relief, chatter saying “thank god” or the like.)

So. I am celebrating 20 years on LinkedIn. Prior to joining, I had already had a long and varied career, and was using early social platforms like AOL Chat Rooms, Friendster, and Myspace 1.0. Before those, I had been emailing since the early 90s, using message boards even earlier back in the 80s, or otherwise living my life offline.

In late 2003, I was invited to beta test. I was working in NYC at a startup called Prefer Network, an early transactional database later bought by Merkle, and over the course of 7 years there, I had a range of roles, including head of “database integrity,” consumer data privacy, or sales and account management.

I had a great network, including all sorts of folks useful to me and the business. I still had an actual Rolodex, but I was already using Salesforce, too, founded in 1999. But, it just stored information, it wasn’t about connecting folks in my network.

The test convinced me that the concept would work. Or that it could.

But why isn’t my start date 2003 instead of 2004? Well, I closed my account. I figured it was too soon, there was no one I knew. I joined again in 2004 – twice – using different names, and closed one of those accounts soon after. The one that has stuck to this day was from an invite from Igor Gorin, and we are still connected – he is Connection #1.

I’ll share some “eras” of the platform in more detail later. But I have used LinkedIn in myriad ways, depending on where each of us was in our “lives" at the time:
1.      Contact management;
2.      Sales leads;
3.      Jobs and gigs;
4.      Cofounders;
5.      Investors;
6.      Board roles;
7.      Speaking engagements;
8.      Podcast co-host and guests;
9.      Sponsors; or just
10.    Entertainment!

In my decades here, I have seen people rise up the ranks in their fields all the way to the top, even become famous. This includes friends, former colleagues, and employees. I have seen people go in the other direction as well, or just disappear. Dozens have died. Even more have gotten married, had kids, or had grandkids. Guess what? It’s pretty much like life.

Almost Anything Can Be a Business: My Mom Started A Couple You Wouldn’t Expect

My mother, Jacky Peterson, taught me a lot about business. More than almost anyone else. She was one of many working women and entrepreneurs in my family. When I reflect on it, it’s pretty amazing. My grandmother helped found a construction company, her sisters launched a restaurant and a small hotel, various aunts had a real estate agency, an insurance agency, and even owned a Mercedes-Benz AG dealership – all decades before it was common. The one who started the car dealership? She has a street named after her in Stamford, CT: Olga Drive.

Jacky was very much a product of this mix, the definition of vivacious. Always living life, loving life – and making things happen. She had a whole series of interesting jobs before she met my dad (they met at work, by the way!). She also had some hobbies she turned into businesses. The primary one: A contests and sweepstakes company. Yes, a business. 

She started, as I mentioned in an earlier post, doing radio trivia contests as a kid. She would keep track of which stations did them, when, what the themes were, etc. and she’d head to the library if needed to read reference books (remember, this was pre-Internet!).

As time passed, she learned that there were also many brand contests and sweepstakes (the difference is that contests require skill or knowledge, and sweepstakes must legally be by chance). She entered and won dozens – eventually 100s and 100s – of prizes, after she found out that people had started clubs and newsletters to share info about how to enter, what the prizes were, etc. She had her own newsletter, too.

Among the prizes my mother won, over the course of decades: THREE cars including a baby blue Ford Motor Company Lincoln Continental, a pool, a pool table, tool shed, patio furniture, jungle gym, a DOZEN TVs, stereos, radios, clothing, jewelry, all the furniture in our house, toys, money, and more, more, more. Mom won our washer and dryer from The Price is Right “home game” – and was mentioned by Bob Barker on TV. 

Jacky also won various prizes in the Pillsbury Bake-Off and from Betty Crocker and others – and then started a recipe business – with cards typed and themed each month, and mailed to 100s of subscribers.

She rarely entered prizes for trips, my parents really couldn’t travel because of my dad’s job and my brother’s health issues. But. She did enter and win her honeymoon trip with my dad. It was a contest to guess how many passengers – exactly – were on a certain cruise ship in 1961 (she entered in 1962). She got the plans for the ship somehow, talked to travel agents, etc. and then calculated out a range, sent in guesses in that range, and was the only one to get it right! See pic below of my parents in front of the Queen of Bermuda.

And there you have it: Post 3 of about 30.

As my grandmother used to say, “work with what you’ve got!” 

This post, like most others this month, is a walk down memory lane. But. There are professional and life lessons embedded in each. Like “Where’s Waldo,” they may not always be obvious, but they are there, nevertheless.

Today I want to touch on media. And embracing change. Media – of all types – has played a role in my success since I was born. It will weave its way into many tales. My entire family had a certain media savvy, my parents and grandparents were often appearing in newspapers, and were occasionally on radio or TV. My mother was on radio trivia shows as far back as the 1940s and interviewed in the 60s and 70s on both her business and my brother (more on that another time), my dad was often upfront talking to the press for his job at the United States Postal Service, starting as early as the 1930s through the 80s. My maternal grandfather was a cigar-chomping union boss, too, always in front of crowds and reporters. And so on.

Let me put it this way: NO ONE in my family was shy.

As a small child, my parents brought me and my brother (one year my junior) to tapings of children’s TV shows in New York City. We both appeared on “Romper Room” in the 1960s and “Wonderama” in the 1970s, among other shows. By the 80s, I was old enough to do my own thing and I volunteered my opinion on politics as early as 1980 and was a “student voice” on a range of topics. This continued through college, but I will save more of that era for an activism post coming up.

One thing I was really passionate about as a teen was helping out my high school, #Masuk High in Monroe, Connecticut. I was a student leader and pep rally leader type, constantly trying to get our world in front of the community. One of many opportunities we saw, aside from being on the local news and in the local papers, was the TV quiz show “High School Bowl.” My friends and I found out how the process worked, got in the official competition, and ended up on TV (see pic below with Jeff Mulholland and Matthew L. Anderson).

Although we didn’t win, the exposure was unbelievable in a pre-Internet world. It even came up in college for me the next year, since folks had all watched it “live.”

The lesson is simple here. Many folks wouldn’t have done what my family and I did, getting out into the world in that way. But. Getting in front of others and becoming known has always been something I’ve practiced. I have been on TV, radio, in the papers (front page more than once), and kept going to today. I have a niche but popular podcast with almost 125 episodes, I am networking behind the scenes here, and I will be streamed live from a conference later this month. I haven’t followed the same path as everyone else, but I have used my winning personality (!) – I’ve “worked with I’ve got” – to continue to get in front of others and stay top of mind for decades. I’m not stopping now.
