Introduction

Welcome to the Mat

Parenthood is not what I expected. People warned me it would be hard, but in my head that meant sleepless nights, extra laundry, and maybe stepping on a Lego barefoot once in a while. 

I am a father of two boys, Alexander (7) and Magnus (4), and husband to Wilna, who is the calm in the storm and the reason our house still stands. By day I am an entrepreneur, wrestling coach, podcaster, and occasional adult. By night I am referee, medic, motivational speaker, short-order cook, and reluctant clown.

The title of this book is not an accident. Wrestling and parenting have more in common than you might think. Both require stamina, patience, quick reflexes, and the ability to get back up after being taken down by someone much smaller than you. 

This is not a guidebook. I have no secrets to perfect parenting. If anything, I have a list of mistakes long enough to qualify as its own appendix. What I do have are stories. The funny, painful, sticky, chaotic stories that make raising children feel at once impossible and irreplaceable.

If you have children, you will recognize yourself in these pages. If you don’t, consider this fair warning. Either way, I invite you onto the mat with me. The match is messy, the rules are unclear, and sometimes the referee is eating cake with his hands. But I promise you this: it will be worth the read.
