For sale: baby shoes. Never worn. This is a six-word story written by Ernest Hemingway in the 1920s. Rumour has it he was having lunch when he got into a debate with a bartender that he could write a story with a full narrative in six words. The bartender, a big fan of Hemingway’s work, was sure he’d fail to do it with as much depth and emotion as his famous novels. Hemingway disagreed. And after offering a $10 wager, leant over the bar, picked up a napkin and wrote six words: “For sale: baby shoes. Never worn.” Like all the best novels, it invites The Reader in to fill in the details. You can imagine the mother (or father) writing the ad, caressing the tiny, box-fresh shoes with their free hand. Okay, Zack, but why are you telling me this?
