I remember it clearly, the hangover that transformed my life,


I was living in Dubai. Had the nice car. Brunches and yacht parties every weekend.

From the outside, it looked like I had a it all. But on the inside? I was miserable.

Waking up feeling like sh*t. Underperforming at work. Easily irritated by people I cared about. Anxious, low energy, foggy.

That morning, for the first time, I became curious and asked myself:

“What would life be like without alcohol?”

I even googled “how to have fun without alcohol”. That’s how f**king clueless I was!

I decided to take a 30 day break from the booze. 30 days became 90. 90 became 7 years!

Since then?

Most business networking events are awkward. A hotel conference room. 60-second intros and surface-level chats.

Managing hangovers vs mastering mornings,


Managing a hangover: It’s Sunday morning, you slowly open your eyes, realise it’s 10am and have instant panic. You told your partner you would take the kids to football and dance class but slept in so she had to do it. 

You’ve got the dreaded message. “We need to talk later”.

You promised her that it would be a couple of quiet drinks and you didn’t get home until 2am again. 

The morning is spent in a shame cycle and the thought of exercise or eating a healthy meal are rock bottom on your list of priorities. 

You have no energy to tidy up around the house so you go back to bed feeling like shit. 

Mastering your morning: You didn’t drink the night before. You’re up and have prepared breakfast for the entire family. You’ve journaled and got your goals written down for the week ahead. 

You take the kids to their respective activities and you’re present the entire time. No need to check your phone as Sunday is family day. Nothing else matters. 

You return home, go on a lovely walk together and sit down to enjoy a Sunday Roast Dinner. Football is on the tele and everyone is happy. 

The kids get put to bed and now you and your partner can enjoy a nice evening together.

Your family doesn’t need your money, they need you


“I do everything for my family”

Yet you get home after spending another 5 hours on a deal and now they’re in bed.

Someone chopping onions anywhere?

Don’t worry, it was ages ago. He had a great quote...

“The nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strength”

Those are the words from Marcus Aurelius.

I used to think that showing anger was a sign of strength, and this is what it meant to be a man. 

Marcus was the most powerful man on the planet. He knew that showing anger wasn’t strength, it was weakness. 

He knew that regulating his emotions was essential, and it's evident in his Meditations journal that he recognised the power of mindfulness and the benefits of daily journaling. 

For over 7 years, I’ve made M.E.P. a daily non-negotiable:

M = Mental State. This is the content you consume from the moment you wake up. 

E = Emotional State. This is regulated through morning meditation/breathing exercises, gratitude and journaling

P = Physical State. This is your body, and is often a direct reflection of the other two states. You must move and train it daily.

Do I still get angry and irritated? Yes, but the tools above help me to regulate my emotions and not sit in anger and frustration for hours. 

Anger is a common, misunderstood human emotion. But as a man, you must learn to understand it. 

Put in daily practices to regulate your emotions so you don’t take it out on your partner, your kids or when you’re in your “safe space” AKA your car. 

Or don’t and keep getting pissed off when someone doesn’t use their indicator…. Up to you 🥴.

P.S. How do you regulate your emotions?

Moderation is a myth for high performers,

“I want to moderate my alcohol intake”

No you don’t. You want to stop, but you’re holding onto your old identity. 

You’re fearful of losing your friends or being judged. 

High performers don’t do things by half. You don’t moderate your effort when it comes to building your business. 

You don’t half arse it when you’re in the gym. 

So why are you trying to give yourself a get out clause from the very thing that is holding you back? 

Change is painful, but it’s only outweighed by the pain of staying the same when you know you’re capable of more.

No.

But alcohol was causing me a lot of problems. Some of them were easy to spot:

- I was getting fat
- Low energy and mood swings
- Anxiety through the roof

Since then, every area of my life has become exponentially better. Not overnight but steadily, and in ways I never expected.

Would you stop drinking and get healthy for them?

I hear this line all the time. Parents say they’d do anything for their kids. But when it comes to alcohol, most still cling on.

Before you come at me with your pitchforks, this isn’t to judge. I see the challenges with my clients daily, and when they remove alcohol, it becomes so much easier. 

I’ve always been a sober parent. I stopped drinking four years before I even started a family. Back then, I thought my main driver was performance…more clarity, more energy, better health and it still is today. 

But the moment I held my first son, everything changed. My reasons for not drinking instantly shifted. 

As I looked down at him, I told myself he never deserves to meet the old me.
The version that drank.
The version that woke up tired, hungover, irritable and with regret. 
That version who could not regulate his emotions.
That version who pretended everything was fine while stinking of booze from the night before.

That man is not the father I wanted to be. And it wouldn’t just be unfair on him, it would be unfair on me. Because when you drink, both you and your family suffer.

“What about when he’s older? Won’t you take him out for a pint?”

Of course I will. But mine won’t have a drug in it.

How I became the father my kids deserved, 

For years I was stuck in an old identity. Pretending to be someone and something that I wasn’t. 

Living up to a character I had created in my mind. The one I thought I needed to be for people to like me. 

I began meditating around 8 years ago. It gave me the clarity and awareness to revisit old habits that were no longer serving me. 

Alcohol being one of them. So I took a break.

That break has lasted over 7 years now. 

I was broken and needed putting back together. I am so glad that I was already alcohol free before starting a family as it allowed me to prepare emotionally and physically for what was to come. 

It’s probably where you’re at right now isn’t it? Drinking to forget or keep up appearances. 

Addicted. Not to the drug, but to the avoidance of sitting with your own thoughts. You're addicted to pain as you don’t feel worthy of happiness. 

Not wanting to peel the curtain back and understand just how much of your life has been spent living out of alignment. 

Doing the deep inner work isn’t peaceful but it will bring your peace. 

Each night my wife and children are excited to see me. My phone goes away, bed and bath time has my full focus and I can be fully present. 

I’m not perfect. I still get agitated. I still have days where I let myself down but my emotions are regulated faster than they ever would have been had I been drinking alcohol and not nurturing my mind.

Checking your phone before you’re even out of bed.

Replying to emails at 10pm

Scrolling on your phone while your kids are asking for your attention.

Telling yourself you “don’t have time” to get  outside.

This isn’t to shame you. I’ve been there. It’s the silent trap of success where fear, insecurity, and not feeling good enough keep you chained to a cycle that’s quietly destroying you.

Yes, a business demands focus and hard work. But it doesn’t have to cost you your health, your family, or your sanity.

You’ll always get what you tolerate. If you tolerate mediocrity, disrespect, and having your schedule dictated by others then burnout is guaranteed. 

That’s exactly why I help founders through our SAS system:

S – Sobriety: Clarity and energy to set real goals, build healthy habits, and prioritise yourself.
A – Alignment: Defining your values and non-negotiables so you build a business you actually love.
S – Self-Mastery: Understanding your inner world, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions so you can lead yourself first.

P.S. How do you look after yourself while running your business?

You can’t lead at your best when you treat your body like a bin,

I see it daily. Founders are running themselves into the ground while treating their health as an afterthought.

❌ Not exercising because “the kids take up all my time.”
❌ Drinking alcohol to “de-stress” after a long day.
❌ Barely getting outside.
❌ Living off coffee and convenience food.
❌ Glued to emails and WhatsApp at 10:30pm, convincing themselves it’s “productive.”

Then they wonder why they feel burned out, short-tempered, and unhappy with their business.

Your business is only ever going to be as strong as the body and mind that runs it. Does that mean you need to be necking ginger shots every morning while ice bathing in a wheelie bin in your back garden?
 
No.

It means creating some simple non-negotiables: 

✅ Move your body daily
✅ Drink 3L of water
✅ Get outside often 
✅ Put your phone out of sight in the evenings when you are with family. 

Health isn’t a “nice-to-have.” It’s the foundations.

You’ve outgrown the life you’re pretending to enjoy,

I remember sitting by the pool in Dubai - No debt, high-paying job, luxury hotels, nice car, sun shining.

From the outside, it looked like I had it all. But I felt completely numb. Waking up with a tight chest. Dragging myself to a job that once excited me. Scrolling LinkedIn during lunch breaks quietly searching for...f*ck knows what 🤷‍♂️ .

I kept thinking Why do I feel like this? I’d ticked all the boxes. Done everything “right.” I had the career, the income and the status.

But I still felt like sh*t!

I eventually realised that success without alignment is just a more glamorous version of stuck.

I was out of sync with my values, my priorities, my purpose. I didn’t even know what the hell my purpose was, I was just waking up like it was an accident. 

Eventually, the pain outran the pleasure. 

So I made the hardest decision of my life: I walked away. 

From the alcohol, the mask, the people pleasing and the character that I thought people expected of me. 

Rebuilding from alignment is hard. You won’t get claps at first. You might get silence or raised eyebrows...well, I sure did!

But what you get back...your clarity, your energy, your authenticity - That’s when things finally start to feel like yours again.

Ok, can you make a load of money and still drink? Yes
Can you stay in shape? Probably.
Can you keep your relationship ticking along? Sure.

The High Performance Habit Almost Everyone Ignores

Stop tolerating bullsh*t,

Every day from the moment you wake up, you are teaching people how to treat you. 

Speaking to others, how you hold yourself, your daily behaviours, your silence and quiet desperation…it’s all teaching people how you want to be treated.

The common issues I see with the men that we coach are

❌ Not using clear and effective communication
❌ Staying quiet and expecting their partner will just understand them
❌ Using passive language 
❌ Not regulating their emotions daily
❌ Lack boundaries and non-negotiables. 
❌ Drinking to “feel better” or “unwind”

But, underneath all of this is something much deeper. They don’t know where they are heading and who they are becoming. 

So, they’re “fine” and respond to with “yeah not bad mate”. Things in their life are ok but not quite shit enough to make changes.

So they accept it and settle for what is. But deep down they know this is not how they want to spend each day.

So you end up hating yourself and stuck in a shame cycle. Wishing it could change and not knowing where to start. 

You don’t need another f*cking podcast or YouTube video, you need clarity, strategy and accountability. 

This is what I do. Day in. Day out.
