Shadow AI is already in your business. 

And here’s what the latest MIT research from project NANDA says:

 👉 40% of companies have official AI tools in place

 👉 But over 90% of employees are using their own AI tools at work

That’s shadow AI and it’s happening right now.

So when we think about employees using shadow AI, here are my top 3 risk considerations...

- Sensitive company/employee data pasted into free tools with no protection

- “Hallucinated” outputs passed off as fact

- Compliance and IP exposure you might not see coming

I like to think of shadow AI not as an enemy, but as a signal. 

A signal from your people telling you they need faster, smarter ways to get work done. If you don’t provide it, they’ll find their own.

So what can we do? 

 ✅ Acknowledge AI is already part of how work happens

 ✅ Put the right, secure tools in place

 ✅ Set the boundaries clearly, what AI can draft, and where human judgement is non-negotiable

I've been reflecting on the incredible YWCA Canberra She Leads Conference 2025, and I'm still processing the powerful conversations around this year's theme: 

"UNITE"

The caliber of speakers was fantastic - from Professor Megan Davis AC FAHA FASSA FAAL sharing post-referendum reflections to Hannah Ferguson Sharing authentic leadership insights, and panels featuring leaders like Katie Kiss Cassandra Goldie AO Leanne Ho and Raphaelle Kennedy expertly facilitated by Nadia Pessarossi. And the awesome seminar I attended by Jo Shapley, the inspiring key note by Hannah Diviney (cant wait to see the princess). 

Here are four takeaways that I'm carrying forward:

🌟 True unity requires dissent, not agreement - The most powerful teams aren't echo chambers. Real leadership creates psychological safety where people can confidently challenge ideas and bring diverse perspectives to strengthen the collective vision.

🌟 Build from your supporters, not your critics - Instead of exhausting yourself trying to convert everyone, focus on strengthening your foundation of allies. Whether it's organisational change or social movements, your existing supporters are your launching pad for broader impact.

🌟 You don't need permission to lead - Leadership is a mindset that starts with how you show up every day, regardless of title or formal authority. Don't wait for someone to tap you on the shoulder - start acting like the leader you want to become.

🌟 Don't just break through barriers - demolish the wall next to them - When you achieve success, your responsibility is to actively lift others up. Some of the biggest obstacles come from those who believe "I struggled, so you should too." That mindset has to end with us.

What struck me most was how these women leaders from completely different sectors - law, politics, media, corporate - all emphasised that authentic leadership means staying true to your values while building genuine coalitions.

The conversations challenged me to think differently about how we create inclusive spaces and drive meaningful change together.

To everyone who shared their stories, wisdom and vulnerability - thank you for reminding us that leadership isn't about having all the answers, it's about creating space for everyone to contribute to the solution. 🫶

She Leads once again brought a day of thought provoking conversations, inspiration and unity- truly one of my favourite events to attend, I hope to see you there next year, So good to see you Penny Nesbitt and massive thank you Nadia Pessarossi for inviting me along (again)  ❤️
