Early-Stage Investor @ Antler | Tech, Startups, VC

I actually canceled my family's health insurance before the government shutdown. Here is what I did instead. 

I was about to personally pay $20k this coming year for my personal portion of the premium and out-of-pocket max if something happened. My employer paid for my premium (and some for my dependents, pretty standard) but you can pay cash for a LOT of things, even surgeries, with $20k. 

So I enrolled myself in the HDHP. My employer pays the premiums and I get to keep the HSA account, max it out, put the rest of the $20k aside in another investment account for medical expenses (or eventually other things). 

So what about catostrophic coverage for my family? Well, the ACA made that illegal. The best workaround is faith-based healthshares. I found one that cost ~$250/mo for my wife and ~$250/mo for dependents for up to $1m in coverage for a catostrophic incident (cancer, car crash, etc). We already live the required healthcode that was easy (no alcohol, drugs, weekly church attendance, etc). 

So my stack is:
- keep myself on the employer plan, max out the HSA (~$8k). 
- take the rest of the baseline and invest it
- healthshare for the family for catostrophic care
- if this works I may check out the math next year of my employer paying me cash instead of covering my premiums as well 

Hopefully this helps people if they are looking for options.

In startups, progress happens slowly then it happens all at once. 

What do founders do to create these breakthrough moments? A few I see...


- Figured out at least one GTM channel that is working well enough to really start building around. 
- Bring on someone truly impressive as a cofounder/early hire in either building or selling. 
- Redefined what they are doing in a way that truly resonates to team and investors. 
- Find the first believer that opens up an inside track of relationships. 
- Converted first design partner or pilot into a paying customer. 
- They fired someone who was holding them back. 

Capital follows these changes, they don't cause them.

Learned that a deeptech investor I respect (was successful across 3 funds including In-Q-Tel) was also in the room when Nintendo struck the deal with Magic the Gathering for Pokemon Cards. ....The nerds have been in charge for a long time.
