I've tried, but I can't find a better analogy for a cofounder search than marriage. And would be shocked at how often people jump from asking for a phone number to getting married in startups. 

For whatever reason, it feels weird to ask people to dedicate nights and weekends to work with you, to test things out, with no guarantee on either side it will work out. 

We do it in dating all the time though, and it is critical to do before you get more serious with a cofounder. Spend time together. Work together. Really test things out. If the other person isn't willing to take that shot, that's something to take note of. 

Gate the commitment on both sides (time, projects, etc) and work toward something bigger. Even after you become true cofounders, make sure vesting is in place. 

Still learning lots of lessons here and how to help founders figure it out fast and get it right.

Finding that my closest friends are ones that...

📖 Love learning and are curious about everything (work, books, hobbies, research).
🥊 Have high expectations and are tenacious in hard times (family, career, character).
🧪 Good communicators (appreciate nuance, good at making plans, often good storytellers).
😅 Don't take themselves too seriously (humble, vulnerable, giving). 


The nice thing about these kinds of friends are that the relationship doesn't really need a ton of maintenance or work. You can have a lot of them and feel connected to all of them. 

This combo often simultaneously inspires me to be better while also making me feel comfortable with who I am. 

If we connect and you are like this... sorry but you are probably going to be added to this list for me :)

So many people talk about cofounder nightmares. Conflict management advice is good, but most people actually made damning cofounder mistakes far before the conflict started. 

For example, some common mistakes when >finding< a cofounder...

No real progress every week on things within your control. You simply can't close a Tier 1 cofounder in a single conversation, so you will have to show meaningful progress every time you connect (this goes for most people you want to recruit to your cause). If all you are doing is talking to cofounders and nothing else, you are dead in the water.

Or the opposite problem: not making it a core priority (10-20%+ of your time a week). If you don't talk to enough potential cofounders, you will take months longer and be way more likely to settle for someone who isn't a good fit. The longer you go without a cofounder the longer you are stuck with 1 founder's effort. 

Probably the biggest mistake - Not doing real work together. Sounds obvious but sooo many people skip this. Please, for the love of all, do real work together in a trial period. Do it in multiple stages: a few conversations, a few days of working together without formalizing things, a few months before any equity is vested. 

Reference calls and life conversations. It's not appropriate to ask much about someone's personal life before offering a job, but it is critical for a cofounder. Things like risk tolerance, how they think about money, how they manage conflict, how stable their core relationships are, what happened at their past companies. You know the ones that matter and the ones that don't. 

Finding the right cofounder changes everything.
