In 2020, I left a miserable HR job. No savings, no backup plan. Just fear.

My dad was furious. 

Understandably, I had just walked away from what so many considered a golden opportunity.

I felt like a failure. 

But deep down, I knew I had to make a change. Because staying meant being stuck in a life and career I had no passion for. I was also trapped in:

🛑 A relationship I thought would last forever
🛑 The house I had lived in for 25 years
🛑 And Sundays spent with my mom’s delicious rice and chicken stew

It seemed too comfortable for my growth.

So, I took the risk. Learned social media management and quit my job.

With no formal training, I hustled day and night, looking for internship opportunities. After months of rejection, a marketing and brand manager for an Edtech company took a chance on me.

It wasn’t easy. But that first step opened doors I never imagined.

Since then, I’ve worked with some of the biggest tech brands across Africa and beyond. Today, I manage social media for a New York-based startup, earning 100x more than I did back then.

In my current role, I’ve:

1. Helped monetize our YouTube channel
2. Created the company’s top three viral posts
3. Increased brand presence on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Q: “How did you break into social media management?" 
A: I slipped in by accident. 

Before marketing, I worked in HR. 

→ Dealt with a toxic work environment  
→ Realized I never wanted to practice HR again  
→ Needed a skill that would be relevant for the next 10 years  

Social media management was the answer.  

Here’s how I got started:  

→ Took an unpaid internship at an EdTech company  
→ Worked for FREE at a FinTech brand  
→ Landed my dream job after building real-world experience  

The lesson? 

Sometimes, you have to prioritize learning over earning. 

→ Work for free if it means gaining valuable experience  
→ Absorb as much as you can from the best in the field  
→ Use what you’ve learned to open new doors  

Win or lose, you always walk away with skills you can leverage elsewhere.  

How did you get into social media marketing?

My goal for the last six months? Level up with my peers globally.

Here’s exactly what I did to achieve it:

1. Upskilled
2. Got virtual mentors

Why does this matter?

I don’t have a traditional marketing degree. I started with an engineering background, transitioned into HR, swore never to go back...

And eventually, I found my love for marketing.

I’m also convinced that over fifty percent of top marketers didn’t learn marketing traditionally either.

So, if you’re looking to improve at social media marketing—or marketing in general—these three things will change the game for you:


1. Upskill

LinkedIn Learning and HubSpot will teach you the fundamentals of being a social media manager. You’ll learn workflows, best practices, and how to stay updated.

But here’s the catch: you also need platform-specific knowledge to truly stand out at work.

Look for top creators and resources for the platforms your company prioritizes.

- Buy their courses
- Watch YouTube videos
- Immerse yourself in their strategies

Learn directly from those crushing it on the platforms.


2. Virtual mentors

Courses will get you started. But mentors? 

They’ll keep you sharp and help you navigate the nuances of the industry.

Right now, I follow Jack Appleby, Darien Payton, Brian Da Silva, and Brandon Smithwrick 🧠 for this exact reason.

They’re my “virtual mentors” even though I’ve never met them. Their insights inspire me to keep pushing boundaries.

Remember this:

If you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far? Find a group of individuals in your industry that you aspire to be like.

∙ Study their DNA.
∙ Model their habits.
∙ Learn how they think.


3. Copy great art

So, you’ve upskilled and found mentors. 

Now, you need to know what great social media marketing looks and feels like.

Find accounts crushing it in your industry and vertical industries. Dig into what they’re doing and why it works then take those insights, apply them to your company, and crush it.

That’s how you become a world-class marketer.

I just spent 3 hours refining a framework for building scalable social media programs. 

It’s something I struggled with for a long time. 

But I landed on this Triple W framework that works like magic every time I consult for a client: 


Here’s the breakdown: 


1. WHO (...You Are and Who You Are Targeting)

Start with clarity. Get crystal clear on your company’s short-term and long-term goals. 

This will shape your direction, KPIs, and the energy required for your campaigns. 

Then, define your company’s unique personality and perspective (Taste Profile). 

Ask: If your brand were a person, what would it believe? How would it behave? How would it look? 

This is the foundation of everything. 

And don’t forget your audience. Learn who they are, what they want, and where they spend time. Your audience drives both your content and your platform focus. 



2. WHY You (Competitor Analysis)

Once you know who you are and who you serve, ask, Why you? 

A simple SWOT analysis will answer this question. Write down your brand's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. 

Next, analyze 5–10 of your top competitors. What gaps can you fill? What trends can you jump on early? Even small wins can position you as an industry standout. 

This will guide you toward building a program that drives brand equity and pipeline. 



3. WHAT You’ll Be Doing  

Now that you know WHO you are, WHO you serve, and WHERE the gaps are, define your content cadence and mix. 

If your goal is sales, prioritize content that drives people to a landing page. If it’s engagement, focus on what starts conversations. 

And always aim for the sweet spot: the intersection of your brand’s POV, your product, and what’s culturally relevant right now. 


TL;DR:

1. WHO You Are and Who You Are Targeting = Foundation  
2. WHY You = Differentiation  
3. WHAT You’ll Be Doing = Execution  

Clarity, analysis, and alignment make all the difference.

Every social media marketer needs to study beehiiv VS Kit (formerly ConvertKit)

Four weeks ago, I spent an afternoon dissecting the Beehiiv vs. Kit showdown.

Here are three lessons I learned about competitive positioning:

1. Picking an enemy = free buzz

When Beehiiv called out Kit’s rebrand, they went viral. Posts jabbing Kit’s logo talk and slow updates spread like wildfire.

Takeaway: Having a competitor to contrast yourself against grabs attention, and fast.


2. Boldness wins hearts (and clicks)

Beehiiv didn’t go subtle on kit; they were cheeky and direct. The result? More engagement and curiosity about their platform.

Takeaway: In competitive positioning, don’t shy away from being bold. Just make sure it aligns with your brand voice.


3. Humor humanizes brands

Beehiiv’s not the only brand crushing competitive positioning. Cal.com, Inc. has been taking a playful jab at Calendly with memes and witty posts. People love it.

Takeaway: Humor makes your brand relatable and memorable, especially in B2B where it's almost nonexistent.

TL;DR:

1. Identify a competitor to position yourself against.
2. Don’t be afraid to stand out.
3. Use humor and authenticity to connect with your audience.
