Retelling the Paystack acquisition story:

On October 15, 2020, Stripe acquired Paystack for $200 million.

To unpack the deal, we spoke with Shola Akinlade, Co-founder and CEO of Paystack, and Matt Henderson, former Business Lead for EMEA at Stripe, in 2020.

Paystack had just become the first Nigerian company to join Y Combinator accelerator in 2016.

There, Shola met with Patrick Collison, the CEO of Stripe.

As Shola picked Patrick's brain that day, he had no idea Stripe would soon become Paystack's biggest investor and partner.

Fast forward to 2018. Stripe led Paystack's $8 million Series A round, alongside investors like Visa and Tencent.

For the next few years, the two companies continued deepening their relationship as Paystack rapidly grew across Nigeria.

Then, in 2020, the conversation turned to the future.

Shola reminisced that it had become very obvious that Stripe would be a very good partner because the incentives were really, really aligned. He said they were ready to start putting on the accelerator and just moving faster.

Stripe saw amazing potential in Paystack as their platform for conquering Africa's massive fintech opportunity.

As Matt Henderson put it, "We're tremendously bullish on Africa. It's 17% of the world's population, but only 2% of online transactions."

An acquisition made perfect sense.

In Shola's words, "It was just like a very natural evolution...Stripe was already my largest investor, so it was really a natural progression." No heated negotiations, just mutual belief in building a fintech juggernaut for Africa.

The deal was a huge win for the African tech ecosystem.

It marked one of the most successful exits in the African tech ecosystem behind WorldRemit's $500 million acquisition of SendWave the same year.
