The Beauty We Forget We chase success. We hustle. We forget to look up. This morning, on my drive to work, hot air balloons. Three of them. Suspended in perfect blue. Colors alive against the sky while cypress trees stood watch. The road stretched forward. My calendar beckoned. Yet for a moment, time paused. Our DISC profiles drive us differently. The D pushes forward. The I craves the next conversation. The S maintains steady rhythm. The C perfects the details. All valuable, yet all potentially blind to what hovers above. Ancient wisdom whispers: true wealth is awareness. When did you last stop? When did you last truly see? The morning commute. The school run. The business meeting. All necessary, none essential. Look up. The balloons drift. The sky holds them. The mountains wait patiently. This moment - gone now - was everything. The rat race has no winners. Only those who forgot to breathe. Your turn. Look around. What beauty waits for you to notice?
The Earthquake felt in Southern California yesterday made me write this leadership post. You won’t see the collapse. You’ll feel it. And by the time you do, your best people are gone. Indecisive leadership. Contradictory communication. A culture of secrecy. These aren’t quirks. They’re silent tremors for the “next big one” (earthquake that is). And they’re decaying your business from the inside out. I am seeing it firsthand in my Coaching praxis —companies that looked great on the outside, but were crumbling from the top down. The leader who needs “one more meeting” before making a move? He’s not being thoughtful! He’s playing not to lose. But exactly this will be the mindset which will lead to a loss. The exec who tells customers one thing and employees another? He’s not managing stakeholders! He’s managing his own fear of confrontation. And the “one” hiding behind closed-door decisions, calling it “strategic confidentiality”? He’s not building trust! He’s building distance. And people don’t follow leaders they don’t trust. They misunderstand this simple rule. Great leadership isn’t about being liked. It’s about being followed. And no one follows indecision, inconsistency, or silence.
