In Summer 2025, LinkedIn's hired a law firm to go after me, to try to take us down.

They killed Aware. But all that did was cut one head off the hydra.

I grew three more heads and am feeling more ferocious than ever.

(Instead of retiring on a relatively nice but not inordinately lucrative passive income stream from our portfolio, I have been blessed with a HUGE dose of energy to keep building.)

At first, we thought we'd mostly grow ViewExport (our legal tech product), and launch the waitlist for ChurnZap (our SaaS management tool), and push on marketing + product for those two.

We thought we would keep our social media tool internal (scheduling, engagement, social listening, etc) and have it be our "secret superpower".

But it occurred to me:

"What if people are still REALLY needing something like what Aware had to offer, but in a fully TOS compliant way?"

It seems like ex-Aware users are hitting me up every day, saying they still need support with social.

And many of them haven't found a tool they absolutely love.

So, I bring you the most teasier-iest of teasers:

for 80% of my entire career, I've done sales

it's been a decade since my job was 100% sales focused (these days it's maybe 20%)

but for almost all of our portfolio companies, when a would-be customer requests to speak with someone, it's on me to respond and take up that mantle

to all founders who want to "get sales off their plate", either to a new hire or a VP Sales or an AI agent:

you'll be much happier in the end if you don't.

let other things go first

not sales

keep sales on your plate as long as possible

really, i should rephrase that to:

"keep *talking to your customers and hearing their needs* on your plate as long as possible"

even when it IS, finally, time to bring in some help - stay close to it: how the calls went, what people are needing, saying, asking for, what their tone is

it'll help you stay current with the pulse of your market

there is little more valuable than that:

intimate, direct knowledge of what the people who you most want to serve, are thinking and feeling

Sage carries blessings from Mestizo elders to facilitate this ceremony and will guide us through a traditional sweat lodge. His role is to support safety, attunement, and inner inquiry so participants can meet themselves with humility, grace, compassion, and love.

Having partaken in this ceremony recently, I cannot speak highly enough of how it reached to the deep parts of my soul and helped me clear and purify the spirit. I am in deep reverence at the prospect of sitting under Sage's guidance in this lodge.

Some of you know Ken as the guy who taught me SEO.

Wildfront is exploding.

We're on track to add $1M of enterprise value by the end of Summer across our SaaS portfolio.

We get 2-4 acquisition leads per week from SaaS founders doing $10k-100k MRR (and we start active discussions with ~10% of them.)

We deploy and reinvest capital back into initiatives that have promising returns, both within AI/SaaS *and* outside of it (like real estate and finance).

We are even buying hardware whose sole purpose is to run AI bots which are starting to power more and more of our daily operations. Including in lead gen and lead qual. Because as I've been saying for a while: AI is f**** powerful for automating back office tasks of all kinds (just not for spamming comments on LI or handling important customer communication).

We are compounding gains over time and at this point have a solid track record as operators.

It's very exciting.

...but what is the PURPOSE of building a $100M+ company from a cold start?

Why do I bother doing all of this again?

Why wouldn't I just sit on our dividends and interest and relax?

Two reasons:
1. Staying engaged and active is stimulating and interesting to me. I'd be bored without it.
2. Also because I believe the world needs more powerful defenders.

I can do a lot more, stand for a lot more, show up a lot bigger, with greater wealth and power and influence than I have.

There are many negative role models: people like Elon Musk, who accumulate hundreds of billions and use their wealth for scorched-earth campaigns that damage the world around them. Ouch. That sucks.

But there are positive ones too.

People who use their platform, their wealth, their voice, for good ends. Tony Robbins has fed tens of billions of people, Barack and Michelle Obama showed us that politicians can be bringers of light and hope, and Malala Yousufzai has campaigned from a teenager for women to be able to attend school around the world. To merely scratch the surface.

No matter how large our impact scales, following in these steps seems like a goal worthy of aspiring to.

And now...

I keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Grow MRR. Spread a positive message. Repeat.

It's been rough out there for a lot of folks.

The world is in flux. And yet while the tides are changing, the pace of change is less than you'd think if you were just reading headlines.

Not to mention it's a quasi-recession (if you take out AI CapEx...). Neither full-blown downturn, nor economic boom time.

A few founders are raising billions. And others are stepping back from failed AI projects.

But quietly: so many entrepreneurs are just continuing to do their thing.

Talking to customers.
Experimenting with new tech.
Building businesses.
Solving today's problems with an eye to tomorrow.

That, if you're curious, is the bucket I fall into.

Watching, observing, testing, and learning all of the fancy new stuff we have.

But not getting completely sucked into it either.

Staying grounded through the whole ride.

You feel me?

Well that escalated quickly.

593 founders on the waitlist already and it's increasing every few minutes.

I'm stunned.

I thought our next launch would be our social media tool, but apparently it's going to be an AI coding tool that didn't exist just 8 days ago.

We posted a video on Twitter of Mac's internal autonomous AI coding tool.

And then:

Hundreds of thousands of people loved it, and several hundred indicated interest in being an early user.

Some social media pundits are criticizing how little Brex sold for $5.5B.

How liquidation preferences are going to eat into a bunch of that and so the founders are splitting something like ~$1B.

This is astonishing to me.

You know what?

Entrepreneurship is HARD enough as it is.

Even if the founders made only (...only!!) $10M each, this would still be a rare accomplishment worthy of congratulations.

(Maybe not if you're hyped up on Silicon Valley and you're taught that you have to become a centibillionaire if your life is to matter.)

But to the rest of us, it's a big deal.

I'm not even a centimillionaire yet 😂 and you can bet that when I am, I won't look down on people making their first $1M or their first $25k or $100k from entrepreneurship.

Not now, not ever.

A heartfelt congrats to the Brex founders from me and the team at Wildfront.

Now that AI is making coding more accessible than ever, people are saying how marketing (call it "GTM" if you want...?) is the final moat.

I don't necessarily agree, but one thing is clear:

Back when I was the founder of a SaaS marketing agency, so many people were not at ALL convinced that founder brand mattered.

They were skeptical of building up the long term pipeline-generating asset that is Organic Search (call it SEO, call it AEO, GEO, whatever).

And now?

I stopped selling marketing consulting services.

I put my money where my mouth is.

We started starting, buying, and growing our own portfolio of SaaS products at Wildfront.

Across them, we get millions of impressions on social, we get tons of traffic from search engines (AI-enabled and otherwise). We're building up an email list of thousands of people who enjoy hearing our contrarian take on growing a SaaS portfolio.

So if you blasted money into sprawling, unoptimized Google Ads campaigns and bloated BDR teams to get a 1.2X ROAS (at best) and are now scrambling to save your Zombie Unicorn because your demand gen fundamentals are out of whack:

It's never too late to change. Start again fresh. Build your brand first.

Really play out in your head what the 2030s are going to look like from a marketing lens.

And start doing that stuff, today.

I asked my cofounder how much faster he is at coding since adopting Claude Code:

"Dunno, a lot. Maybe 5X, 10X faster at shipping product?"

Let's take the middle range and call it:

Coding is 7X faster when you take an experienced engineer and give them Claude Code.

Okay, that's really cool. But here's the problem:

When it comes to getting customers? AI has only made us... maybe 30% faster at marketing and outbound sales.

That gap is where most founders are dying right now in a cycle of hope vs FOMO.

Here's what nobody seems to want to admit:

Social media feeds are drowning in AI tinkering. People sharing their latest prompt hack. Their new agent setup. Their "so game-changing it'll make all SaaS free within 6 months" workflow. Don't get me started on "omg this guy replaced all his employees with agents"... sheesh.

(Admitteldy it's actually not quite as bad on LinkedIn as it is on Twitter, and to some extent Reddit)

But when you press these people, most of them won't (can't!) give you revenue and MRR numbers, heaven forbid there be any actual profits. They're just having a grand old time "building tools" and telling everyone who will listen how amazing it is and how it'll wipe everything else out yada yada.

Meanwhile, the actual builders went quiet.

Most are not posting about Claude vs Codex.

They're in customer calls. They're analyzing churn data. They're fixing the onboarding flow that's bleeding 42% of free trial cancellations.

The truth about building a real SaaS company (or any business for that matter):

→ Starting is about solving one painful problem really well.
→ Growing is about talking to customers to learn, fixing your product, and talking to them some more.
→ Scaling is about retention, not acquisition. LTV has to exceed CAC by an ever-increasing margin.
→ Exiting requires a profitable business that isn't a job in disguise.

And AI helps with almost none of that, at least directly.

Sure: it helps you build features and LPs faster. Test ideas faster. And it at least would seem that the AI coding platforms are making a mint in gross revenue and ERR.

But AI just plain **doesn't help much** with deeply understanding why customers churn. Or with finding product-market fit.

It certainly doesn't help you build trust with your first 100 users, and might even REDUCE trust if used unwisely.

The starry-eyed AI bullsh!t continues to be a distraction.

The real work is the same it's always been: understand your customer's problem better than anyone else, solve it better than anyone else, and build a business that prints actual bottom-line net income. Not low-margin gross revenue.

Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked about how fast it's made us and many others at coding. That part rocks.

But there's a whoooole lot left that GPTs can't do well, or can't do at all.

And hey, if you're in total disagreement with me, I'd love to hear from you in the comments (with specifics please, not the tired "you're getting left behind" stuff)

Being an entrepreneur is simple but difficult.

1. Work like a maniac to get a services company off the ground in the early days
2. Then, cool off a bit so you're not killing yourself from stress
3. Save 40%+ of your income
4. Reduce taxes where possible
5. Invest as much as you can of your savings
6. When your investment gains are about covering your lifestyle, move toward building products vs selling services
7. Continue to reinvest in the product business as you please without needing your business to pay your bills
8. Not totally sure what's next since I'm still at number 7...!

My last SaaS company acquired customers for <1 mo CAC Payback Period with influencer marketing.

Here's my playbook on how we're playing the game differently 👇 

Old Influencer Marketing:
→ Pay big influencers $1-2k per post (or a fat retainer)
→ Focus on highest # of followers to pick influencers
→ Goal is to create "buzz" (!!)
→ Brand writes (boring) posts for influencers

New Creator Marketing:
→ Close partnership with creators where they retain most creative control
→ Smaller budgets for a wider variety of creators
→ Prioritize and measure "Creator Audience Quality" (CAQ) ratio
→ Prefer 2-10k follower counts where possible, but exceptions do apply
→ Pay healthy commissions when you *actually acquire* creator-sourced customers; when you can verify audience quality, move toward fixed fee
