I quit my job with £1400 in my bank account to start a personal branding agency in the middle of the pandemic.

My ex-employers thought I was delusional.
My accountant thought I was making a huge mistake.
A well respected industry figurehead told me my business would (and I quote) “crash and burn.”

The average age of starting a business is 35-45 years old. I started my 1st business at 21.

The average age of getting married is 38 years old. I did that at 26.

The average age of having your first child is 31 years old. I did that at 26 as well.

The average age for a woman to get divorced is 42. I did that at 30.

Career change? The average age is 30ish. I’ve changed careers at 22, 25, 27 and 30.

Societal timelines used to weigh quite heavy on me when I was younger. I thought because I didn’t have it all figured out by 25 or hadn’t made my “first million by 30” I had somehow failed myself and failed to prove I deserved my place in the world.

I think we all have so much pressure on us to have accomplished X, Y and Z by this age or that age. But NO ONE’s timeline should be the same.

Because none of us are the same person.

Starting your first business at 21 or 65 is still an achievement.

Getting married at 26 or 56 is still beautiful.

Buying your first home at 30 or 70 is still a MOVE!

You have NOTHING to prove to anyone by but yourself. Life is not a race - and knowing what’s at the end of it, why would any of us want to get to the finish line early?!

Progress takes time and happens in layers. You’ll get to where you’re meant to get to, even if you’re not there today.

So stop living your life to other people’s timelines. Your life will be 10x better if you don’t.

90% of people on LinkedIn don't comment on other people's posts. 

Here is why those people are losing: 

#1 Commenting gets you comfortable with putting your voice out there.

#2 It's easier to add to someone else's conversation than start your own.

#3 If you're adding VALUE, there's a high chance that other people will want to piggyback off you and keep the conversation going.

#4 When you regularly appear in the comments section, the audience that those thought leaders have accumulated will start to recognise you. 

#5 If you do it enough, you're going to bring people from their profile to yours so it's a great way to introduce yourself to a new audience.

#6 If your comment does well, or sparks an interesting reaction, you can turn it into content for your own page. One of my best-performing posts was a comment I'd made on someone else's profile, copy-and-pasted. 

Who knew NOT sharing content could be so powerful.

I started building my personal brand because I couldn't be bothered to DM 100 people when I could do one post and reach 10,000. 

When I was a recruiter, I would DM the CEOs of companies I wanted to work with. 

I sent them high-value information about their industries and their competitors, and pretty quickly they started saying things like:

"Hey, how the hell do you know more about my company than I do?!"

(Thank you, Google Alerts). 

That opened doors.

Those doors led to opportunities, which became leads, which turned into more commission for me. 

But after a while I realised how inefficiently I was working. Those individual relationships were paying off, but they weren't worth the time and effort I was putting into nurturing them. 

Plus, I'm a really lazy marketer. 

So I started posting the same kind of high-value insight and advice on LinkedIn for all the world to see. 

My reach soared, my commissions quadrupled, and that's how I stumbled upon the power of building a strong personal brand. 

And now I run an agency doing it for other people. 

If you can connect with the people who matter to your business and create real value for them 1:1, then odds are you'll be able to do the same on a much larger scale. 

That's all personal branding is: building relationships at scale. 

Work smarter not harder.

People assume that you have to be ruthless to get to the top.

You have to be sneaky. 

Having met and interviewed some of the most successful founders in the world this year and I can confirm good business people are good people.

They’re kind. 

They care.

They’re interested in what each other is doing and what they have to say.

The people at the top are NOT competing against each other, they’re collaborating. They’re finding ways to win, together.

So, share your spotlight. Support people, in public. Even your competitors. And connect great people with other great people - without wanting anything in return. There is enough business to go around for all of us.

Successful people don’t put others down - they lift people up.

And by the way, when you lift other people, you also lift yourself.

I genuinely think that confidence comes from asking the barista at your local coffee shop for 10% off your morning brew, knowing damn well that he’s going to say no, but asking for it anyway.

I always receive DMs asking about confidence and where I found mine. 

The honest answer?

By exposing myself (not literally 😂) to a lot of opportunities, that if they went wrong would really hurt my ego. 

I’ve put myself in a lot of “no” or “you’re wrong” situations. 

And I continue to do so, every day. 

- My podcast.
- My TikTok.
- My YouTube Vlog.
- The content I post on LinkedIn.
- And to be honest probably the decisions I make and the things I say offline too. 

But confidence isn’t about always being right, it’s about potentially being wrong. And being 100% ok with that outcome. 

So, here’s my challenge to you. 

If you lack confidence in any area of your life, the next time you’re in the supermarket ask for 10% off your basket. 

Ask your barista to give you your coffee for free.

Politely inquire with the sales associate whether or not a small discount would be possible. 

Chances are they’ll say no. 

Which is great news for you - Because confidence needs to be built up across “nos” (and yeses) over time. 

And the more you expose yourself ‘no’ the more confident you’ll becoming in finding the ‘yes’. 

Whether that be in asking for a discount on your morning cappuccino - or pitching for that game-changing client you so desperately want to win.

You’re raising the next generation of human beings. 

You’re Mother Earth. 

And there is NOTHING more important than that.

HERE is why you will tell everyone you don't care what people think of you – but you really do. 

Our million-year-old brain is designed to protect us from being kicked out of a tribe (because being ghosted by all your mates used to mean getting eaten by a sabre-toothed tiger). 

But sabre-toothed tigers don't exist anymore. And we're not going to get eaten if we get ditched by our friendship group, our job or our local yoga studio. 

However, our brains have not evolved. So we still believe there is genuine danger in raising eyebrows. 

The problem with that is:

If you only do the things that make you fit in with everyone else, you're NEVER going to stand out and you're NEVER going to get the opportunities that you deserve.

You want the world today to give a sh*t about you? 

Then you have to be able to stand up and say THIS IS WHO I AM. And you have to be okay with other people not liking that. 

Yes, wanting validation is normal. It's biological. 

But that doesn't mean it's a good thing to go out seeking it.

Your Monday morning reminder that when you improve your life, people will tell you "you've changed".

They mean it as an insult but actually, I hope to God that you've changed.  I don't want to be the same person all my life. I want to grow. I want to expand. I want to evolve and become and experience something new every single day. Don't you?

When people say "you've changed" 95% of the time it's because you're acting in a way that they can't. They've not done the work yet. And that's ok, we're all on different journeys.

But you're under no obligation to stay the same because your realest, most vibrant self makes other people uncomfortable. 

Because of course you've changed. 

You've not worked this hard to stay the same.

It doesn't matter if you're trying to build a personal brand online or not, people are going to judge you. You kind of have to accept that. 

If you're allowing other people's opinions of you to:

Dictate your actions.
Dictate the content you post. 
Or dictate your ability to build your personal brand.

You will always lose. 

Because those people are not going to be there at the end of your life to congratulate you on the life that you've lived.

You need to be in charge of you want to achieve.

If you're always listening to other people's opinions, you're never going to get there. 

And trust me, people will have an opinion whether you post content or not.

So you may as well accept all the tools you have in your shed and just f*cking post it.

If you want to build a strong personal brand you have to give 100% of your knowledge away for free.

When it comes to posting content online, the Number One thing executives worry about is giving too much away for free when they could charge for it. 

That is a huge mistake because putting all my cards on the table is the REASON my business model works.

Let me explain.  

99% of the people who read my content about personal branding will not do what I'm giving them the knowledge to do. They just don't have the time/resources/skillset. But they DO trust me because I've given them my knowledge for free.
 
So, instead of going out and building their personal brands themselves, they'll ask me to do it for them. 

Every successful person in their field follows exactly the same formula:

- Elon Musk did it when he made Tesla’s patents open-source to encourage the development of electric vehicles.

- Kim Kardashian's makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, did it when he shared how he contoured Kim's famous face with the world (thanks for that, btw).

- Gordon Ramsey, Jamie Oliver and literally every other famous TV chef do it when they share their best recipes and "secret" ingredients online. 

So that's one thing I have in common with Elon, Mario, Gordon and Jamie: we've all shared information for free, but that information has turned into attention, credibility and ultimately long-term revenue. 

That's why there is absolutely NOTHING to gain from gatekeeping your expertise, and EVERYTHING to gain from being generous with it.

To all the women and girls who are labeled 'aggressive' - keep being assertive, queens. 

To all the women and girls who are labeled 'bossy' - keep leading. 

To all the women and girls who are labeled 'difficult' - keep setting your boundaries.

To all the women and girls who are labeled 'too much' - keep taking up space. 

To all the women and girls who are labeled 'complicated' - keep asking the hard questions. 

And to all the women and girls who are labeled 'angry' because they had to put up with assault, harassment, and missed opportunities - be f*cking FURIOUS. 

Change only happens when people get ANGRY enough to make it happen.

It's hard to create if you don't consume. 

A big part of why I spend so much time on LinkedIn and social media generally is to consume content. 

Because it's really hard to create anything interesting if you haven't consumed interesting content first...

The HMP WANDAWORTH female prison officer being filmed allegedly having s*x with an inmate wasn’t a mistake.

It was strategic.

It was a carefully plotted out launch campaign to drive traffic to her Only Fans account, in my personal branding opinion.

I don’t think she was tricked. 

Or coerced. 

Or even in love. 

I think she plotted this out carefully to create a viral moment that would guarantee her name hit the press - and subscribers paying her for her content. 

I’m no legal expert, but from what I can gather she’ll receive a suspended sentence. And even if she is under house arrest, she can create content, and capitalise on her ‘moment’ for many months and years to come.

Remove the ethical, legal and moral aspect from this case (would we be talking about it like this, if it were a male officer and female inmate?), this is a pretty impressive - abiet shocking strategy.

And it’s worked. 

She’ll probably make 6 figures from this moment. 

Was it worth it? Only she can answer that. 

But what I will say, is Anna Nicole Smith reportedly earned $14 million through her career for her outrageous persona…

And she famously said “I make more money when I do bad things, than when I do good.”
