I’m a sensitive soul.

I am sensitive to others’ emotions and experiences. I’m a deeply self-aware person with a disliking towards conflict. I get pretty easily startled, so don’t creep up on me. I care, a lot.

For a long period of time, I assumed my sensitivity to be a weakness.

I believed that sensitivity and resilience were mutually exclusive qualities.

You were one or the other.

One trait to describe the successful leaders, who have faced storms and battalions on the journey. And the other is often associated with the likes of care brands, non-profits, charities and nursing care.

I felt like I had the wrong trait to ‘go far’ in the biz space.

After all, aren’t business owners these aggressive, profit-obsessed sharks who seem to be the exact opposite of sensitive?

But after 3+ years of networking, I see that sensitivity and empathy are common attributes of success.

A trait to be celebrated. An unfair advantage. The secret ingredient to a creative’s recipe.

I own my sensitivity like a badge of honour, especially when my clients share their success stories.

Yes, I may often take on the burden of others, and suffer from the personal attacks of road rage drivers on the M25, but that’s only half of it.

My sensitivity makes me great at what I do.

I’ll start taking it as a compliment, rather than devaluing it as an insult to my character.

6 months ago, I invested in a service I was pretty cynical about.

If you’ve been living under a rock, or only followed me recently, you may remember I raved on about GoFounder last year.

6 months of accountability coaching and we’ve ticked off A LOT.

But don’t get me wrong, I was sceptical about the idea at first.

“Why pay someone else money when I’m the one moving the needle?”

Okay but, why hire a PT when you have to work out? Why hire a counsellor when you have to make action?

The same applies.

Before this, I had soooo many inconsistencies in my business, even my personal brand.

My ADHD brain lacked stability in my sales pipeline, brand messaging, marketing funnel, and most of all, my personal habits.

Now, half a year later, it feels like I’ve experienced a mini “reawakening”.

- Improved sleep hygiene
- Poor dopamine habits kicked
- Integrating mindful activities for my wellbeing (gym, running, walks, reading, learning a language, journalling)
- Repositioning my services + tone of voice
- A healthy pipeline of qualified leads
- A new service offering I’m proud to share
- Dozens of frogs eaten

All because I pulled my finger out and got on.

I’ll be honest with ya: I am no productivity guru, or self-development goddess.

But I gave this a go, took responsibility and the outcome has been invaluable.

I used to sit lurking and scrolling on LinkedIn for HOURS, then moan about the stagnant position my business was in.

I’d have countless networking calls at the expense of my social battery.

I’m sure many of you resonate.

Must we have a badge to loudly state our “anti-engagement pod” affiliation on here?

I’ve been aware for quite some time of the surge of engagement pod use.

I am aware that these very pod users are individuals I once worked alongside, buddied up with, or looked up to in the early days.

I am also aware that upwards of 40 people in these so-called ‘pods’ are the very personal brands and creators that we idolise, praise, and celebrate. The users we fangirl when they respond to our DMs, comments and even connect requests.

Some of these creators will throw you a bone, exclaim they’re not part of an engagement pod, and explain the concept of a paid, third-party app that every Tom, Dick & Sally can buy into.

Lempod and Podawaa ringing any bells?

But, they’re not including the manual sharing activity that goes on in those private Telegram and WhatsApp group chats.

I’ve had invites to join these very communities, hidden behind blanket statements of “good authority” and “collaborations between creators of similar size followings”. Yelp.

Some are founders of well-established businesses who solve REAL problems, so it’s a real shame to see their values diminish here.

A conga line of validation-seeking scoundrels, creaming over each other’s motivational posts and begging for the constant ring of the notification bell.

This is inherently fuelling a culture of comparison.

People starting this personal brand rat race are eagerly watching these creators, under the illusion that their hard effort has been wholly organic.

An unhealthy expectation has been drilled into their mind that every post must go viral, or attract hundreds of likes at the very least.

Another social media platform placing emphasis and rewarding vanity metrics and creatorship, rather than building meaningful, quality business relationships.

Another social media platform selling the white picket fence dream of 6-figure salaries on 4-hour working weeks with no real arduous work being done.

I declined the invite. No conga line joined.

P.S. If you’re taking time out of this bank holiday weekend (UK) to write LinkedIn posts, write from the heart. Not for the framework. Oh, and go stuff your face with that extortionately priced Easter egg. Happy Easter, you lovely bunch.

Company: We need more brand awareness and sign ups. Social media isn’t working for us.

Me: Okay, right, I see your copy is flooded with jargon and corporate language. Unfortunately that isn’t connecting with anyone, especially your customers. You need to write like a human.

Company: But this is the brand voice we’ve used for 10+ years. We must be professional to our target audience!

Me: So you're intentionally choosing a dull, unrelatable brand voice that connects with no one?

Company: Yes…

Look, you’re not expected to make a 180° flip and embellish your copy with sarcasm.

Being ‘unhinged’ isn’t the criteria here.

But, you’re a group of humans behind that organisation name. And your customers are human beings — so write like a human.

LinkedIn is starting to feel like a regurgitated explore feed.

Motivational mantras, hastily scribbled cheat sheets and 7-step blueprints to success.

Some folks are turning their personal brands into influencer gold mines, raking in cash from 4-figure brand deals and high-priced power hours (props to them, no shade here, unless they're pulling pod shenanigans)

But they’re also the same individuals sharing advice on how to build a personal brand that puts dosh in your digital wallet.

Their lavish formula of 10 million views per annum, 100k followers, and sexy short-form video setups isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.

I think we’re forgetting that startup founders are often strapped for time, cash and the secret sauce knowledge to rally together that ideal personal branding toolkit.

Let’s be a little more realistic here.

I’ll hold my hands up and say jumping on the LinkedIn bandwagon 3 years ago was a game changer for me. I caught the wave before it became a full-blown tsunami.

Since then, it’s a whole different ball game. A couple hundred million more LinkedIn users have signed up, and thousands more vying for eyes on their content daily.

But, that’s not helpful to those who started posting at the start of 2024, this month or even this week.

Because, right now, you’re fighting for a slice of victory in winning over your ideal audience’s attention.

That’s why I share advice (on my profile and to my paying clients) that doesn’t turn you into another cookie-cutter influencer clone.

But advice that helps you become an actual authority in your field, puts dosh in your bank, and brings a positive impact to your people.

Because that’s why you’re here, right?

Not to become another billboard influencer, but to be a well-rounded business owner that uses LinkedIn effectively and properly.

Carve your own footprint on here, instead of hanging off the coattails of someone else’s fame formula.

You’re always going to find a way to upset someone on LinkedIn.

You expand your team? Someone rolls their eyes.

You hit a milestone? Someone rolls their eyes.

You make a pivot? Someone rolls their eyes.

You launch a course? Someone rolls their eyes.

You have a polarising opinion you *actually* stand for? Someone rolls their eyes.

You ask for help? Someone rolls their eyes.

You breathe? Someone rolls their eyes.

Okay, last one was a joke, but probably true one way or another.

Yes, this platform is ridiculously supportive, filled with thousands of go-getter entrepreneurs and friendly individuals.

But, realise that there will always be people who ain’t your cup of tea. You’re a chai, they’re an early grey - it be like that.

There will be trolls and naysayers. There will be people who disagree. There will be people who feel a need to share their disgruntled views on the platform.

But, don’t let those pesky voices creep into your thoughts and tell you that you shouldn’t be here.

That ‘hesitation hurdle’ always feels ten times bigger when the crowd aren’t cheering for you.

But, YOU deserve to be here.

You deserve to shout your story aloud, network, and build your business on here.

Drown out the noise, put your blinkers on and keep shining your light on LinkedIn.

My first ever client paid me £99 a month.

He also gave me discounted physiotherapy sessions.

My second ever client was my Mum and her partner’s construction company.

She still does my bookkeeping for me three years on. (thanks Mumsy😘)

Another early client was a director of a pest company. 

We only worked together for 6 months but he still checks up on me every few months.

Sure, I priced myself ridiculously low at the start. It was all I knew?!

But it got me in the door of the local business scene. A place where I had zero clue how to run a business, struggled to find my niche or comprehend business networking “etiquette”.

It hardened my skills, definitely, but it also taught me what kind of business owner I wanted to be. I was faced with a fair few bad eggs in the early days, doing some shoddy, somewhat illegal, business.

It filled my noggin with a shedload of business knowledge. Imagine little old Izzy coming away from her own sales calls with not only a NEW client but advice to grow, network, market! (I was chuffed, for £350 a month, heh)

I don’t regret those prices in the beginning.

I regret not raising them sooner. It took me a solid year of pep talks to slap a proper price tag on my services.

But oh boy, I am so grateful looking back on those times. I was absorbing new information everyday and so excited for the journey.

Coming up to 3 years since I left corporate and started Spark - what a whirlwind.

If you’re spending your Sunday evening writing LinkedIn posts for the week ahead, here’s 1 tip:

(Especially if your personal storytelling content performs better than educational content)

Humanise your educational content by relating it back to a personal experience.

Whether that’s you, a client, or another person.

Entice them with a story and consider the emotions, the transformation, the thought process you experienced.

Then, connect it with your insights, key takeaways and business acumen.

Most likely, your audience will engage, your impressions will increase and your pretty little face will land on the timelines of your ideal audience.

Remember — whilst it’s easy to share “Here’s 5 ways to achieve X”, not everyone likes to be slapped in the face with a textbook checklist.

This is Debbie, my mum.

And she is breaking the bias.

I have met hundreds of inspiring, ambitious women in my life since starting my business.

But I wanted to speak more on this special woman.

👉 She works in the construction industry — specifically a ceiling & partitioning company.

Within such a 'male dominated' industry, she is often met with surprise by her extensive knowledge of ceiling tiles and other partitioning related needs. Such an invigorating subject, I know…

It is seriously refreshing to see a growing movement to encourage more women to enter the STEM field, and break these taboos.

But there's still a lot of work to be done.

👉 Personally, my mum inspires me a lot. She brought my brother and l up as a single parent at a young age.

With the sacrifices she made to her own career development, she encouraged me to start my business in 2021. She basically wrote my resignation letter for me.

Her qualities inspire me to not only be a better professional, but a better human. She's unafraid to stand up for what she believes in and is proud to take up space in a room full of voices.

👉 Having her support in the early days has lead me to where I am today.

My first SMM client. My bookkeeper. My cheerleader and biggest motivator.

A lot of my close business connections know

I am so terribly grateful for her.

I've fallen back in love with writing again.

Ok, I'm not exactly caressing my laptop screen as it displays text on an open Google doc. I'm hardly writing love letters at a chic, Parisian café in the city of love.

But, l've started feeling passionate about my Linkedin posts again. It's been a good few months of churning content out of requirement, not for enjoyment. It became a chore.

Since surrounding myself with good people, they've encouraged me to strive for my potential - deservedly.

And I've felt growth in my tone of voice. Real authenticity, over performative.

What I stand for and what I can share.

I've stepped away from content frameworks, short sentences and 'rule of three' listicles that are an attempt to be engaging and memorable.

I got an A* in English writing. I was a bookworm. Stories intrigued me.

I've always been a creative for emotional connection and touching souls, not engaging minds for the pursuit of commodifying attention.

Yep, it gets less engagement in this attention economy. I'm not always presenting a 60-second masterclass with actionable, immediate value to be obtained.

But it provokes curiosity in the brain, and takes readers to another dimension. A nostalgic throwback of fictional feelings, escaping such seriousness and jargon.

I've returned to this writing style, proudly, and it's had a good response so far.

My audience feel heard and understood.
They connect and put trust in my words.

So, as soon as we hop on a call together, they are reassured that they're speaking to the same person as they met online.

This, for me, is my personal brand.

Descriptive writing that paints a vivid picture and casts you as the main character.

Writing from the heart feels effortless.

You don’t have to be best friends with everyone on LinkedIn.

There’s a prevalent, yet unspoken, pressure to give unwavering support to everyone we come across on the timeline. An unwritten expectation to nod our heads and agree with every story shared.

You MUST share the same values. You MUST agree on the same perspectives.

And for the love of everything, you should not disagree with your comrades.

Maybe it’s because we KNOW founding a business is difficult.

We KNOW that attaining investment is like facing a never-ending obstacle course.

We KNOW that being a founder is actively choosing the less-trodden path of life because we want the challenge, the risk, and the chase.

But it’s counterintuitive to seek comfort in the echo chambers of our like-minded friends.

Diversity of thought and constructive disagreement is valuable. It has its place.

We can still resonate and support one another’s journeys without seeing disagreement as hostility or a personal attack on one’s bloodline.

Sure, I’m not saying we should take a page out of Twitter’s book and draw blood over every differing opinion and debate we are faced with.

But a culture of respectful dialogue (rather than conformity or unquestioning agreement) is so important for the startup founders and business owners here.

Founding a business doesn’t look like skyline offices, early Friday finishes, and checking off investment rounds like a bingo card.

It’s hard work.

That’s why we need a platform where diverse perspectives are not only tolerated, but celebrated.

To push our mind’s boundaries. To offer innovative solutions to our struggles. To enrich our experiences in life.

So, yes, I stand by the point that you don’t have to be best friends with everyone on LinkedIn.

A “yes-man” culture serves no one.

Little bit of a different post from me today.

I’m working on some interesting projects with interesting startups this quarter.

I’m looking for:

I’m often seeing the same creators in my timeline each week, and I know there are talented freelancers & creatives that I’ve not come across (yet).

I’ve lost over £12,000 of projects this month.

I’m not sobbing into my pillow at night or kicking myself over lost revenue. It was never mine to begin with.

In fact, I disqualified these prospects on the basis that they weren’t ready.

People encourage you to - “just get started” and “take the leap NOW” but there are some exceptions.

One prospect was an award-winning actress and film director with 2 million followers across social media platforms. She didn’t have the funds to work together until later in the year.

Another was a C-suite executive at a large tech company overseas. A client with positive impact to make in this space, but with a tough social media policy at the company, she’s pretty restricted.

One was a CEO at a social mobility organisation across 4 countries, changing the lives of children globally. She’s filled with fear and imposter syndrome that building her brand would exaggerate her name, instead of the team behind her.

All of these prospects had a barrier.

Whether it be mentally, financially, or red tape formalities holding them back from cracking on.

Yet, ALL of them are solvable.

I’d never force a client to work with me if it meant paying my invoice was their final pounds and pennies in the bank account.

But, the mental obstacles and red tapes? Changes can be implemented.

To allow freedom from social media policies. And freedom from that nagging voice telling you that you’re not good enough to shout.

So, yes, it’s a bummer to lose out on three new clients with AWESOME stories to share.

But I’m not some snake oil sales(wo)man, shoving my offer down prospects’ throats and not taking ‘no’ for an answer.

Those clients may return to my DMs when they are ready.

And I can be assured that I’m sticking to my values of honesty, when I know of many who don’t.

I never paid much attention to the LinkedIn testimonials section.

That was until I wanted to invest in someone’s services.

Scrolling down someone’s profile seemed far easier and accessible; there was little to no friction in me confirming my buying decision.

And it's far better than trigger-clicking my cursor on numerous website pages and eventually arriving at a “case studies” page, where previous client names are hidden behind single initials and codewords.

Sigh.

Do these people even exist?

But it also prompted the question – are MY testimonials up to date?

At the time, they weren’t. I hadn’t had a testimonial in over 6 months. Yowza.

So, for the last 9 months, I’ve been booking an end-of-month Google calendar meeting with myself.

With the sole purpose of reaching out to existing and previous clients and asking them to write a cheeky testimonial.

Not everyone replies - which is fair.

I felt awkward asking at first. The sheer audacity in asking for public praise on the services you’ve provided. Proper internal cringe, that.

But, it’s days like today when you’re sat on the couch, smiling ear to ear and reading a lovely testimonial - from none other than the brilliant John Mouratis 🎬. Thanks, buddy.

I'm the middle of a pivot.

You may have noticed my headline has changed.

And if not, I'll spell it out to ya. I've added
"Fractional brand strategist".

A decision I've been slowly moving towards in the last 4 months, but even more so after the Seychelles business retreat last month.

It's not a complete transition, simply an expansion of my work.

With clients, many of the deliverables have been outside the scope of their personal brand, and more so their business. From the organisation's brand strategy, positioning, and creative campaigns.

I thoroughly enjoy it, and seeing results made in both the personal AND business brand, that's cool.

Yet I must state that I am still:

— amplifying the personal brands of social impact and purpose-led leaders through consultancy and ghostwriting
— taking on projects to devise strategies and revamp Linkedin profiles
— delivering personal branding workshops to employees and communities

Look, I'm a people person and the sheer amount of empathy I have means I can grasp people's mission, purpose and tone of voice pretty quickly.

This part of my work is here to stay.

But, I am human: I grow, evolve and refine who l am over time, and that includes the career path I'm on.

I'm spending a fair amount of time this month revisiting my positioning on my profile, the pending (!) website and my slide decks. (Also a lot on scalable processes to be sifted through)

So, bear with me a little.

Just over a week ago, I shared that I’m offering a complimentary brand audit for April.

A good dozen people hit up my DMs, curious to pick juicy flesh from my brain and hear my thoughts on their brand.

Here are 4 common themes I saw:

1. They’re not optimising their headline.

The first thing people see when you send a connect request, upload content, comment, send a DM. First impressions count, folks!

Make sure it tickles their brain the right way. Add personality. Speak the same language as your audience.

I waded through 1,000 connect requests yesterday. There were MORE boring, snooze-worthy headlines than not.

2. They’re reposting their company page posts, other team members’ or random creators.

Your profile should be your brand's pièce de résistance, not an advertisement hub for others.

A sprinkle of reposting is fine, but drowning in others' content? Not cool.

3. They’re not networking enough.

I don’t mean this as in commenting and engaging - that’s different.

But, our 15 minute call gave them a sh*t tonne of perspective on their brand identity, their stories and their untold business wisdom.

They know they need to make changes yet they can’t locate the starting point. Having conversations and talking about YOU uncovers real gems.

4. They’ve built a content funnel for other marketing mediums, yet forgotten about LinkedIn.

A sweep of their website and I see tonnes of free resources and materials, and none displayed on their profile.

Missed leads, missed nurturing, missed opportunities.

Get that free resource in your profile link, your featured section and talk about it.

Take your prospects through a simple commitment curve and build up that mailing list. It’ll take under 5 minutes to add.

Pleeeenty of other things we walked through, but some key things I noticed.

I've started asking my clients to give me an elevator pitch.

Unprepared and without a framework. I ask them to speak to me as if I was an ideal prospect wanting to learn more.

Because a business owner's personal brand goes beyond a mere Linkedin post.

And since you're responsible for practically everything in your business, you're also responsible for how others perceive you.

So, when it comes to...

Introducing yourself. Communicating your expertise. Explaining your story and services. Addressing your customers.

They all play a ridiculously important role in leaving a lasting impression.

Think about it: introducing yourself is usually the first interaction in networking.

And, obviously, none of us want to experience cotton mouth when we’re asked the typical question - "What is it you do?"

Neither do you want to stumble over your words, veer off on a tangent and lose focus with those constant 'umms' and 'ahhs'.

That isn't giving the WOW factor. It won't make you memorable.

So, l've been encouraging clients to introduce themselves to me spontaneously, just as they would to a potential client.

Then, we analyse and refine the pitch together:

- ﻿﻿Distilling their essence into a brief 60-90 second statement
- ﻿﻿Revealing any inconsistencies between them and their service offering
- ﻿﻿Being able to succinctly articulate their
"unfair advantage"
- Rehearsing the elevator pitch until it feels natural and flows smoothly

Those seemingly minor details really do matter. Especially when someone is considering investing tens of thousands of pounds in your services.

Attention to detail pays off - don't underestimate it.
