I have always loved to be out of my comfort zone. Whether while serving in active duty military for 10 years, working in federal law enforcement for almost 9 years, or guiding backcountry adventures, I have always wanted to live my life to the fullest. 

My goal as a Certified Professional Wellness and Spiritual Coach is to enable you to do the same. To give you the space and confidence to try, so you can discover your personal strengths to succeed. 

As a combat veteran suffering with Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), it took me time to rediscover my strengths and find the courage to let go of fear. So taking the first step towards self-discovery, required much reflection and action. Nature and adventure gave me this. Once I embraced this mindset, I realized that there were no limits to what I could achieve.

Since becoming an adventure wellness coach, I have intentionally surrounded myself with individuals who inspire me and have something to teach. I believe that continuous learning and personal growth are essential, and with the right skills and abilities, there are no boundaries to what we can accomplish.

My personal struggles with PTS have been the catalyst for the creation of my unique enterprise. Drawing upon my extensive background, expertise, and my degrees in outdoor adventure education, I have gained valuable skills, knowledge, and opportunities to connect with individuals who are seeking positive change in their lives due to trauma and burnout. This journey has allowed me to provide support and guidance to those in need, helping them navigate their own paths towards healing and transformation.

I believe my purpose is to become the fullest expression of myself and to help others do the same.

High performers have a different mindset.

I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) from National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians!

I've been putting in the effort since January to complete this certification, so that I meet the necessary medical requirements to continue my volunteer work with the Southern Arizona Rescue Association.

Warning:  Long post . . . 

Yesterday, I had a really interesting chat with some members of IronTribe.  

We got into a discussion about discipline, which was sparked by Cornelius Kirk’s post. 

During our conversation, I had a realization that made me view discipline in a slightly different way.

To me, discipline is like a double-edged sword. 

On one side, it's a necessary skill that requires consistent practice to improve. 

But on the other side, the only way to get better at it is to make it a cyclical process where you're constantly making progress. 

This is where having an accountability partner becomes crucial.

In the military, they excel at instilling discipline because they have strict policies, procedures, and protocols in place. 

There are consequences for not adhering to those standards. 

Even though that kind of lifestyle requires instilled discipline over time . . . 

what happens if you don't have that built-in accountability?

For me, starting my coaching business was a way to create my own accountability. 

I'm passionate about the program because I've experienced its benefits firsthand. 

I know it works!

But what I discovered was that purpose and discipline go hand in hand.

Let me explain. 

When I wake up in the morning, I don't dread my day. 

I don't think, "Oh man, I have to do this or that." 

This new chapter of my life has become my purpose. 

It's why I do what I do!

And what I've found is that while discipline is still necessary, the root of that discipline lies in my purpose.

Think about someone you know who is driven and motivated. 

They seem to have endless energy, and you may find yourself wondering how they do it. 

Well, it all comes down to their "why." 

When someone discovers their purpose, whether it's 

~ helping others
~ making a difference
~ overcoming struggles

they tap into a deep well of discipline.

They:

1. give their all
2. show up every day
3. spread love to others 
4. maintain a positive attitude

It's not just discipline; it's a sense of purpose. 

They believe in what they're doing, and they know it matters. 

That's why they're able to stay committed and disciplined.

So, while I believe that discipline is a skill that needs continuous practice, it's essential to look at your purpose in life and understand why you're doing what you do. 

When you can see the impact it has on yourself and those around you . . . 

discipline becomes more than just a skill . . . 

It becomes a driving force!

Today, I challenge you to reflect deeply on what you're doing and go beyond that. 

Think about why you're doing it. 

Is there a passion that fuels you and allows you to wake up every day with determination? 

Or are you just going through the motions of life? 

Finding your purpose will instill a level of discipline that can propel you forward in your life and those lives around you.

Traditional therapy only did so much for me!


My own personal experience with PTSD and the transformative effects of ‘natural medicine’ in wilderness settings 

led me to create my business and Adventure Wellness Coaching program. 

But don’t only take my word on it . . . 

the data supports this system of healing.

In a study published in the Journal of Experiential Education

14 veterans joined and were evaluated during an extended thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail.

What the respondents highlighted were 4 major themes:

Theme 1: Social Reconnection
Theme 2: Life-Improving Change
Theme 3: Inner Peace/Psychological Healing
Theme 4: Processing and Reflection

Now I wasn’t apart of this study . . .

In fact . . . I was still in federal law enforcement when this study was published.

But what I discovered years later 

. . . on accident . . . 

was much like the veterans in this study mentioned.

I found social reconnection and lifelong friendships through my outdoor adventures. 

The isolation of the wilderness gave me the time and space . . . 

. . . to reflect on my life and make positive changes

. . . just as with these respondents. 

Adventure and wilderness provided inner peace and psychological healing

. . . allowing me to accept myself and heal from past traumas. 

The processing and reflection that occurred during my time in nature helped me clear my mind and find clarity. 

These themes from the studies validate the importance of my program 

. . . and its focus on supporting the veteran and first responder communities. 

And through my own journey

—> I have witnessed the power of nature in promoting well-being and guiding personal transformation.

Exploration and exposure to new things hold immense significance in our lives. 

I recently went on a hike to a known location by many in the local area 

. . . where I had the privilege of encountering some petroglyphs

. . . ancient rock carvings made by the indigenous people who inhabited these lands long before us. 

To me . . . petroglyphs symbolize not only the rich cultural heritage of Native American communities 

but also serve as a catalyst for personal growth and reflection.

Exploring these petroglyphs allowed me to connect with the past and honor the resilience of those who came before us. 

It is a humbling experience to contemplate the hardships and challenges the Native American people endured

their deep connection to the land

and the wisdom they passed down through generations. 

I’m not Native American 

But wife is . . . and is a member of the Sioux Nation (Rosebud Tribe)

I believe that by acknowledging and respecting their legacy . . .

we can learn valuable lessons about sustainable practices in our own lives.

The petroglyphs serve as a reminder of our responsibility to preserve and protect the environment . . . 

. . . and what was lost. 

Native American communities are known for living in harmony with nature

And I think we can adopt some of those sustainable practices that ensure the well-being of our planet. 

From reducing our carbon footprint to supporting local and indigenous initiatives . . . 

we can contribute to a more sustainable future.

~ I believe in the spirit of exploration
~ honoring those who came before us
~ weaving their wisdom into the fabric of our lives. 

By doing so . . .

we not only gain a deeper understanding of our shared history 

but also inspire others to appreciate and respect diverse cultures.

Do you ever have those days when you feel overwhelmed by fear, shame, and anxiety? 

Yesterday was definitely one of those days for me

. . . and some of those feelings are still lingering today. 

Actually . . . when I woke up this morning . . . 

. . . the first thing that came to my mind were those feelings.

But what is this fear based on?

For me . . . it's the fear of failure.

When you've experienced multiple setbacks in life like

~ losing income
~ a loss of purpose  
~ a sense of losing community

it tends to wear you down without you even realizing it until something triggers those thoughts. 

Even the smallest thing can make these emotions HUGE! 

But here's the thing: 

I know that beyond that fear lies growth and better days. 

And one way to move forward during these tough times is by sharing it with the world. 

by writing it down
sharing it with others
simply expressing that fear 

This begins the healing process and the journey towards progress. 

So, here's my challenge for you today . . . 

if you're feeling any of these emotions

—> share it with someone. 

Share it with 

1. A close friend 
2. A family member
3. Your online community 

Or do what I did —> and do all 3

Because when we put it out there for others to see

. . . especially those who genuinely care . . .

it's real and gives credence to our feelings.

Oddly . . .that's when the healing begins 

. . . and the fear and anxiety become easier to handle.

Ever heard of slow adventures?


At the heart of slow adventure lies the concept of . . . well . . . 

. . . slowness!

And further requires an awareness of two main principles:

1. Speed
2. Place

Which when written out . . . 

. . . involves engaging in place-based activities at the right pace . . . 

and forming genuine connections with the environment around you.

Slow adventure encourages us to understand our local ecology and culture through our senses

. . . rather than solely relying on a photograph. 

While photography can be part of the slow adventure experience

~ the art of storytelling
~ immersive encounters in nature
~ inspiring connections with the outdoors
 
are essential elements. 

Slow adventures can also include certain engagements in outdoor activities like 

—> animal watching
—> long-distance bikepacking trips
—> appreciating your local food and drink culture 

This ensures smooth transitions between activities without relying on fast-paced transportation. 

And allows us to truly experience ‘place’ with our senses . . . 

. . . fostering a commitment to sustainability and the art of slowing down.

As someone who had to shift from a career in the federal law enforcement 

And as a new business owner and graduate student

—> I understand the struggles of comparing myself to others. 

It’s so easy to see what you haven’t accomplished. . . Yet!

But I've learned that true success comes from within. 

And it starts by recognizing a few key elements. 

First —> cultivate self-awareness through reflection. 

This identifies opportunities for 

~ practicing gratitude on a daily basis
~ setting realistic goals that match your values 

This is what really began to transform my mindset. 

I've realized that my journey is unique . . .

and my progress (even small) matters. 

Also . . . limiting social media exposure was another big one. 

I left FB and also stopped watching the news in 2016

And it was the best thing I could have done for my mental health. 

Mind you I’m on LinkedIn 

Which can lead to some of this comparison

But I’m on no other social media platform. 

What LinkedIn has provided is an opportunity to seek supportive networks   

This has been a game-changer. 

Because of this 

I’ve helped found two other networking/business opportunities that I believe in. 

. . . And now confidence has flooded back into my life

Allowing me to embrace self-compassion 

and focus on personal growth. 

It hasn't always been easy

. . . but I've seen the positive impact it has had on my wellness and business prospects. 

You know you better than anyone else in this world.

You have the power to overcome comparison and create a fulfilling future

I've gained valuable insights from countless hours spent tracking in the wilderness. 

Tracking is all about following subtle signs and picking up on small disturbances in different environments. 

Mountainous terrain
Hard and soft dirt
austere environments

It's a powerful metaphor for life . . . 

. . . reminding us that we may occasionally veer off our own path and lose our way. 

When this happens

~ we must pause
~ assess alternate routes

. . . and if necessary . . .

~ return to our last known location of sign (tracks). 

Just like a tracker remembers specific details from that previous location 

we too can rely on our strong foundations and expertise to course correct and get back on track. 

Time and experience teach us the importance of reestablishing our original framework 

. . . and relying on what we know to confidently move forward.

As an outdoor adventure educator and certified Adventure Wellness Coach . . . 

this is what I can provide to my clients.

You’re so Lazy!


But it’s not your fault. 

I understand the challenges of overcoming laziness in today's modern world. 

Here’s the deal though . . .

when it comes to exercise and being uncomfortable . . . 

Our brains are wired to conserve energy

a trait inherited from our ancestors who needed to survive in harsh conditions. 

And with our access to technology and abundant food

. . . we have become too comfortable. 

But here's the exciting part: 

—> it is possible to break free from this cycle and push our limits. 

By taking small steps towards exercise and pushing our discomfort levels

. . . we can retrain our brains and make physical activity easier and more enjoyable. 

It’s the same with getting outdoors.

Reconnecting with nature can be a very difficult and stressful process for some

. . . because we have separated ourselves from this transformative experience. 

—> making access to nature difficult. 

But by testing the thresholds of our comfort 

We are breaking the chains from the laziness trap. 

What does this mean for you?

~ step out of your comfort zones
~ explore the wonders of nature
~ prioritize wellness into your life

Your brain will fight you each step of the way. 

But the more you test those boundaries 

. . . the more flexible your brain becomes.

Want to know one of the earliest documented studies on the benefits of nature in the U.S.?


In the early 1900s . . . 

an administrator at Manhattan State Hospital East found himself facing a serious tuberculosis outbreak. 

To prevent further infection . . .

he decided to set up tents on the hospital grounds for uninfected patients. 

The outcome was remarkable! 

Not only did these patients show significant improvements . . . 

. . . but the hospital also discovered 

(in separate events) 

that placing patients in outdoor natural environments yielded similar results. 

Later studies conducted in 1946 by Campbell Loughmiller 

focused on orphans and disadvantaged children

while in 1971 . . . educators and administrators from Outward Bound created Project Adventure.

This involved designing and experimenting with outdoor curriculum. 

Time and time again these types of studies showed striking results. 

Patients or participants showed vast improvements.

In the OB Project Adventure program . . . children who were previously described as:

~ lifeless
~ lethargic
~ irresponsible 

returned with renewed vitality and exhibited positive changes in their behavior like:

—> responsible decision-making 
—> increased alertness
—> intelligence

These early studies were instrumental in defining what is now called Adventure Therapy.

Since then . . . the field has expanded beyond adventure therapy to include therapeutic adventure programs. 

These programs prioritize improvements in

1. health
2. wellness
3. behavior 

through action-oriented interventions in nature. 

While my own program is not therapy or counseling . . . 

. . . it is a form of therapeutic adventure coaching. 

Together we embrace challenges and struggles

. . . and empower individuals to take action in their lives to achieve better outcomes. 

I firmly believe in the healing power of nature!

But sometimes we all need someone to guide us on that journey. 

So we can discover its true potential —> and ours!
