I'm not officially a travel advisor but after many years in Spain and lots of travels around the world, I dispense some advice now and then!

This write-up from Martin Rosenberg on visiting the vineyards of Lanzarote highlights something very special about the Canary Islands archipelago.

Much of the terrain is dry, almost lunar landscape, but it reliably produces some incredible wines. 

The process of watering the vines comes directly from nature- the porous lava gravel absorbs the dew that forms overnight as temperatures fall, and the roots in turn absorb that moisture. The vines are also grown in shallow depressions that protect them from the wind and trap even more moisture.

As an experience, visiting the bodegas is one of my top recommendations for Lanzarote. Few places on earth showcase such an incredible landscape, and if you can have some great tapas and wine along the way, what's not to love!

An interesting afternoon as I discovered the wines of Lanzarote and more especially how the vines grow on land that is covered by lava stones and how they are protected from the wind.

The photograph of the lemon tree during the off-season perfectly shows how growth is horizontal rather than vertical.

Well worth a visit if you're in the area and I strongly recommend combining it with a Tapas lunch.
