Nerd

Led a team on a large initiative to implement NFTs for all brands in the Nerd ecosystem, which includes several different types of NFTs such as those that provide rebates and coupons to users that receive or purchase them, and others that provide reward boosts through daily reward distribution for users running Blockchain nodes.  I built a Go service that includes features such as NFT collection creation, IPFS storage for NFT images and metadata, along with several RESTful endpoints for collections, individual NFTs, minting, etc.  Other team members developed features such as the deployment of a smart contract for each created collection, and the minting process for NFTs.

Built and maintained several other Go and C# services, some of which are part of a process related to distribution of daily rewards given to all users for each brand in the Nerd ecosystem (estimated to be more than 50,000).  Also added several new packages to the Chain team's Go common library, which is a shared set of Go packages that can be used in any Go project.  Some of the pkgs I added include JWT authentication through Google Firebase, a common API authentication package, a package for database connectivity and database migrations management, a Geth RPC client, and an IPFS client.

Principal Software Engineer - Blockchain Team

Nerd United is an incubator for Blockchain companies, referred to internally as brands. Each brand has its own unique goals, but one common goal is to create a token economy through tokenized goods and services that provide value to consumers. We built a core platform as a basis of what is implemented for each brand, which includes a crypto wallet service, token rewards distribution, testnet/mainnet services for running a Layer 2 blockchain, a charter voting service built on immutable infrastructure, a shopping service for selling goods and services that allow users to utilize the token economy, and more. Services are deployed to each brand's own cloud infrastructure.

I lead an engineering team in building Web2 and Web3 software and dApp solutions for some of the brands. When I started, some good engineering practices were missing due to a very fast-paced environment, so I've worked to fix some cultural things and implement practices like unit and automated testing, monitoring/observability, documentation, feature flagging, and CI/CD, while preserving a fast pace. I also spend my time writing lots of code, creating architecture specs and diagrams, coaching/mentoring, helping team members to work through difficult problems, and helping product and project leaders with backlog grooming.

Lead Software Engineer - Multiple Brands

Moov Financial

Moov Financial makes it easy for software companies to add money movement to their software products.  We integrated directly with the payment rails, rather than through third parties, which is a big differentiator.  Moov also leads a vibrant open-source fintech community with thousands of members, offering dozens of open-source repositories widely used by organizations to embed banking services in their apps and other technology stacks (for example, moov-io/ach has been used by companies to move more than $3T a year).

Moov's paid platform (separate from its open source offerings and where I spent a majority of my time) is highly distributed (composed of 50+ microservices), is extremely secure due to both SOC2 and PCI compliance and the inherent risks associated with moving money, and is in a Cloud Native environment with hybrid synchronous and asynchronous communication.  Client apps communicate with API services; an eventing architecture is heavily used for asynchronous service-to-service communication.

Some accomplishments:
• Architected an orchestrator for ACH payment facilitation, and led a team in the design and development of a robust, fault-tolerant, highly scalable, and performant set of ACH services that have allowed customers to move millions of dollars each day
• Implemented highly scalable infrastructure solutions in GCP and Kubernetes.  The platform has the capability of handling more than 5000 requests per second, which allowed us to onboard a number of enterprise customers that brought huge volumes of daily payment transactions, opening up millions of dollars in annual recurring revenue

One of my accomplishments was leading an engineering team in building a data orchestration flow that featured the ability for a customer to extract data from their database by selecting from a list of database types and providing a SQL query, at which point the data, once extracted is dropped into a data processing pipeline, which runs through several transformation steps including mapping, cleaning, enrichment, and analysis.

Banjo (now mi|im) was a live capture of events happening in the world. Its mission to save human lives and reduce human suffering was driven by its ability to find and capture important events and provide law enforcement and emergency responders with information to quickly make decisions.

As a lead software engineer, I oversaw and had my hands in the development of real-time data pipelines enabling ML analysis and in-product features and developed RESTful and GraphQL APIs at a massive scale for customer-facing products (AWS spend was more than $1 million per month).  I also oversaw a team of 5 engineers in the design, development, and maintenance of 20+ REST and GraphQL API microservices.

The pipelines and services my team developed handled data on the scale of billions of messages (TBs of data) per day from hundreds of unique sources, including computer-aided dispatch, highway/CCTV camera feeds, and social network posts.

I implemented cloud solutions in AWS supporting five engineering teams on many simultaneous development projects on a few different platforms and tech stacks.  I came as a subject-matter expert on Magento and Linux and provided significant experience with AWS, which most of the engineering teams were just starting to use when I came on board.

Cricut products are used by millions of customers worldwide on a daily basis, so the systems I worked with generated very high amounts of traffic.  For example, the Aurora database backing Cricut's e-commerce website averaged more than 12,000 queries per second.  And the APIs supporting Cricut Design Space averaged thousands of requests per second during peak loads.
