The Australian federal government, under the direction of Home Affairs, will conduct a comprehensive "stocktake" of all its internet-facing systems and services by June next year. 🕵️‍♂️🛡️Here's what you need to know:

🔍 Pressing Need for Security: Australian Department of Home Affairs Secretary Stephanie Foster emphasised the urgent need for Australian government entities to strengthen their technology management practices.

🛠️ Comprehensive Audit: Government entities must audit all hardware, software, information systems, platforms, mobile applications, and as-a-service offerings that handle official or security classified information.

📋 Technology Security Risk Management Plan: Each department and agency must develop a plan detailing lifecycle management practices, controls to mitigate cybersecurity vulnerabilities, supply chain risks, and continuous visibility and monitoring. 🔒🔎 🏢 

🌐 FOCI Risks: A related directive requires managing risks of foreign ownership, influence, or control in technology procurement, likely in response to concerns over Chinese-made drones and CCTV cameras. 📡

🔗 Cyber Threat Information Sharing: All 189 government entities subject to the protective security policy framework (PSPF) must share cyber threat information with the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) via the cyber threat intelligence sharing (CTIS) platform. 

💬 Industry Insight: Sarah Sloan, head of government affairs and public policy at Palo Alto Networks, highlighted that this is only the second time the government has used its binding directive powers, the first being the prohibition of the TikTok app on government devices. She noted that the "stocktake" is well-placed to help the government secure vulnerable systems promptly.
