The world's current energy system is incredibly INefficient, which is why energy demand will FALL as we electrify everything and move away from fossil fuels. 

In a decarbonised world, *final* energy demand would be much lower than it is today due to the efficiency gains from #electrification and more efficient appliances.

But factor in the enormous waste heat losses from the combustion of fossil fuels to generate that electricity in the first place, and *primary* energy demand will fall even further.

Naysayers like to point to charts of global primary energy demand and then laugh at the current contribution from renewable energy. This is misleading, because that primary energy demand is going to fall significantly. 

Let's use lighting as an example.

The old system:
➡️ 75W incandescent light bulb, illuminated 1600 hours and consuming 120kWh per year. 
➡️ Power it with electricity from a coal plant at 37% efficiency and add in 10% grid losses.
➡️ This gives primary energy demand of 360 kWh. 

The new system:
➡️ The same amount of light could be delivered by an 11W LED bulb. 
➡️ Used for 1600 hours and with the same 10% grid losses this would consume 20 kWh per year. 
➡️ Powered by wind, solar or hydro, we have just reduced primary energy demand by 95%. 

We've also eliminated the associated CO2 emissions in the process. 

And this is just lighting, the same principle applies for transport and heat as well. 

So bear this in mind next time someone tries to tell you renewables are never going to make it. They won't have to.

Here's an excellent video about the "primary energy fallacy"- the result of the commission of what I like to call the 2nd Sin of Thermodynamics.  This sin against the 2nd Law is to confuse a joule of heat or fuel chemical potential energy with a joule of work (electricity, mechanical energy) as if they are WORTH the same because they're both measured in joules, kWh or the like.

They're both energy and measured in joules, but they're not WORTH the same.  Just like an American dollar and a Jamaican dollar are units of money measured in dollars, but are not worth the same.

There's an exchange rate missing, called a conversion efficiency.  And for conversions of heat to work, that efficiency ranges from poor to positively craptastic.  Thermodynamics sets no limit for how POOR that efficiency might be.  The original steam engines were much less than 1% efficient, as just one example- though we might rival them with some of the dumbest e-fuels schemes some people are trying to sell us...

And some people assume the exchange rate is 1, because that supports their ideological or business interest.

In a decarbonized future, we don't need to replace every joule of heat energy we currently make by burning fossils, with a joule of electricity- at most, we need to replace the energy services we currently use.  It's my hope that we also get smart and find ways to deliver the things we value- mobility, transport of goods, comfortable homes, food in variety and quantity etc.- in return for fewer joules worth of "energy services" (useful energy) too.

Decarbonization is 1/2 to 1/3 as hard as the Vaclav Smils of the world would have you believe.  To be fair, even Dr. Smil has gotten this message of late.
