My career story could be called “The Accidental Executive.” How else do you explain a guy with an undergraduate degree in English and a Masters in Higher Education Administration (who bombed every business class he took) rising to lead national teams and divisions for Fortune 500 companies successfully? Why? Because I paid attention. And through perseverance, a willingness to say yes, and a little luck, I rose through the ranks of these companies. For me to be successful, though, I needed to understand why they were successful. And I learned that what drove them forward was relentless attention to numbers, people strategies, processes, and planning. I want to say everything was easy over my career trajectory. That would be a lie. It was challenging and difficult. I suffered from imposter syndrome, and I didn’t always know the right answer. I second-guessed myself and made things harder by putting off difficult conversations. And there were sleepless nights too. When I hired an executive coach, I began the journey to put all of that behind me. I realized that surrounding yourself with a great team and leading it well was the key to success. Having a plan and not putting off the hard stuff was the best way to grow. And throughout all that, I realized one of the things I enjoyed most in my career was developing and coaching my team. When we sold that business, it made sense to transition into a coaching career. And when I’m not working on my business, you can find me co-hosting the Q&A on Breakthrough Leadership podcast, catching up with my adult sons, curating my comic collection, or watching my Florida Gators. Let’s connect for a consult. Please send me an email at craig@clearpathcoaches.com

I have many "To Dos" to keep track of as a solopreneur. A few weeks ago, I started a trial of Motion to see how that would help. Here is what I found so far. 1) It has started to help, although writing down all your To-Dos can feel overwhelming when collected in one place. 2) I severely underestimate how long it takes me to do something. 3) I enjoy clicking something as "done" far more than I realized going into this. Any experts out there using motion as a solopreneur with suggestions, insights, tips, or tricks? #solopreneur #motion #projects
Last week, I posted about the tension between giving your all at work and still facing a layoff when the business undergoes a shift. I shared how that happened to me before both times I was laid off. I was all in. I worked hard. I got results. Then one day, I was out. In the comments, I said something blunt: "Most leaders stink at handling layoffs." That stuck with me. So I updated an old blog post where I laid out what I’ve learned from leading layoffs—what works, what doesn’t, and what real empathy looks like in those moments. But here’s what I’d love to hear from you: What does the right way to handle a layoff look like? If you’ve seen it done well—or done poorly—what stood out?

I am so excited about this networking event coming up on June 5th. It can be lonely being an SEC grad in Big 10 country. As President of the Indy Gator Club, I have wanted to build this event for years. Over the last two years, I have been fortunate to connect with other local SEC Clubs, and we all generated the energy to make this event happen. So, if you know of a local SEC School alum or fan, please share this event with them. It's our fifth event, and they just get better and better. And a quick shoutout to the University of Florida Alumni Association (Heather Ashley, David Rountree, Kiefer Fairbanks, Shirley Lynn, and more), who have helped our club grow beyond watch parties to genuine alumni engagement. #SECAlumni #GatorNation #UFAlumni #Networking #IndianapolisNetworking #GoGators https://lnkd.in/ghzq3t2m

Are you promoting your top performers into leadership roles... and setting them up to fail? In this week’s Evolving Leader newsletter, I share takeaways from my #ExecutiveEvolution podcast interview with Ben Pippenger, co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Zylo. We talked about why leadership isn’t always the right growth path, how to make time for your people, and why peer recognition might be more powerful than anything coming from the top. Here’s a quick preview: ✅ Not every high performer should manage people ✅ Leading well takes intention, not just time ✅ Recognition means more when it comes from a peer If you want to build a team that grows, supports each other, and actually enjoys showing up, this one’s worth a read. #Leadership #PeopleDevelopment #TeamCulture #EvolvingLeader
Still trying to be the leader you think you're supposed to be? In this week’s Evolving Leader newsletter, I share insights from my conversation with Dr. Debra Chromy, President of FAS. Her leadership story is a powerful reminder that connection and trust don’t come from perfection—they come from being real. Here are three lessons from our conversation: ✔ Lead with authenticity. Bring your full self to the role. ✔ Let go of mistakes once you've learned from them. ✔ Listen first when stepping into a new role—change starts with understanding. If you're looking for leadership you can feel good about—and tools to help you do it better—this one’s worth a read. I’ve seen a few posts lately about layoffs, and why you shouldn’t give your all to an employer who might let you go without notice or reason. I get it. But I want to push back a bit. When I was at Chase, one of my team members told me, “I bleed Chase blue.” At the time, business was strong. I looked him in the eye and said, “Right now, your interests and Chase’s are aligned. And that’s great. For now. But when that changes, Chase won’t hesitate to let you go.” I was right. A few years later, the student loan industry shifted, and both our jobs were eliminated. That sucked. But I don’t regret the early mornings, late nights, or business trips I gave to Chase. I was rewarded financially. And, more importantly, I grew significantly as a leader. So yes, work hard. Give your best to the company that values it. Just don’t confuse alignment with permanence. It may not last forever, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your full effort. - Put in the effort. - Take the reward. - Stay ready for what’s next.
