In short. Yes.

To be slightly more nuanced…

Purpose doesn’t have to be altruistic.

It just has to be beyond the product or service you’re selling.

For example, take Bose Corporation.

They build their brand on the belief that Sound Is Power.

Their purpose is applying the highest level of scientific inquiry and invention to the discovery of new concepts and the development of new products.

Why?

To help their customers have wonderful experiences, powered by sound.

Whether that’s:

→ A blissful moment in a crowded train
→ An intimate conversation with a quiet backdrop
→ A supercharged run with your favourite tunes

That’s what they want to create…

Is that altruistic?

Not necessarily in the context people usually expect…

They’re not planting trees, offsetting carbon or feeding homeless (they might be BTW, but they’re not overly talking about it)…

Instead, they’re focussing on their skill set.

Helping their customers enjoy life with sound.

And I think that’s as good a purpose as any.
