“Get off your phone.”

That’s what my 8-year-old son said to me. 

His little face was red with frustration.

And in that moment, my heart sank.

Like so many of us, I was “just checking one more email.”

I told myself I was multitasking. I told myself it only took a second.

When my son snapped, I felt the sting. 

He wasn’t just annoyed. 

He was craving my attention, not the distracted and disconnected version of me.

The leading cause of burnout isn’t only the workload. 

It’s being always on.

Another text message or Voxer message, email, phone call, social media message.

📊 Research shows people touch their phones 2,617 times a day (Brussels Times).

That’s 2,617 tiny interruptions.

2,617 moments pulled away from what matters most.

So I created a new ritual.

A small wooden box that says: “It’s Family Time — time to unplug.”

At the end of my workday, I hand my phone to my kids and let them put it in the box.

The shift is immediate.
✨ For me: my mind rests, my shoulders drop, I’m actually present.

✨ For them: they feel important, valued, seen. They know they outrank any notification.

It’s more than a box. It’s a boundary. A choice. A promise. 

It's intention to be present with the people that matter most in my life. 

Burnout doesn’t just happen at the office. It creeps in through the constant connection.

But you get to choose: presence over pings. 

People over push alerts.
