Hi 👋 I currently lead marketing at Owner.com. I've built marketing teams at companies big and small, from public companies ($HUBS, $EA) to early stage startups. I spend a lot of time thinking about marketing and how to be a better operator, teammate, leader. I post hot takes now and then. Follow along! There are 3 types of marketers: Artists, Soldiers, and Gamblers. You can avoid so much career misery by knowing which one you are: 1. The Artist Artists are the best storytellers in the company. They have a deep understanding of psychology. They care about craft. As a result, they create work that makes people feel things. They make people proud to be a part of that company. They need environments where they have autonomy and creative freedom. Measurement, budgeting, org design -- Artists view these as necessary evils that drain energy away from what they view as real work. Artists typically thrive in companies with strong founder vision. Where vibes are part of why people buy. Apple, Airbnb, Patagonia. 2. The Soldier Soldiers are incredible at execution: after all, a business is just a system of inputs and outputs. You can trust them to know the numbers cold, and get along great with sales and finance. They thrive when structures are in place, when there are well-defined targets to be hit. They love taming chaos and instilling predictability. They will make the numbers move. But they will not make hearts move. Soldiers typically succeed in stable orgs or public companies. Or in any team that idolizes Frank Slootman. They should stay far away from seed stage or pre PMF startups. 3. The Gambler Gamblers see marketing as a numbers game. They think in experiments, arbitrage and asymmetric upside. The best Gamblers remove bottlenecks — or unlock new channels — and 10x growth. Gamblers can only succeed when leadership that has the same risk appetite, or the resources to take big swings. This is why Gamblers typically thrive in early stage (try anything yolo), or B2C (numbers game) or pre IPO startups with ambitious growth goals. Knowing your "type" matters: Type-Company mismatch is one of the root causes of professional suffering. Put a smart marketer in the wrong system, and everybody loses. Pick the right company, and that's where careers are made
