The next word brands need to remove from their copy voice lexicon:

"Let"

You don't "let" your customer do anything. They don't need your permission.

Specifically...

Stop saying you're, "letting them in on a little secret." What are you, a Bond villain? Sitting over there twisting your little pencil mustache laughing into your cold soup?

Stop it.

What you do is:

- Help
- Guide
- Teach
- Give
- any other verb that doesn't posit you as being in control

But, you do not "let" them do anything.

I cut A LOT of classes in high school.

My (second…) freshman year, my buddy and I would escape across the field behind the girls’ gym. 

We'd scramble over the tall wooden fence lining the football field into the backyard of a friend's house, praying her 200 lb. Rottweiler was asleep and dreaming of mailmen.

This jailbreak had nothing to do with my belief in the importance of education."If you want to do anything with your life, you have to go to college," had already been drilled into me. And I loved learning. I enjoyed the practical application of new knowledge even if I was a crappy student. My favorite was any time I got to write and create. So I was mostly miserable.

Halfway through my junior year, I dropped out. The monotony had bored me into rebellion. That and the 50 hours a week I was working at Chilis breaking my baby back ribs.

When I breezed through the GED program, I was pretty sure I'd made the right decision. When I graduated in the 98th percentile, I was absolutely vindicated. The confines of traditional school just weren't conducive to my best self.

26 years later, I had a second epiphany: 

I’m a creator. My creativity inspires me to break free of boxes and scale fences. But I don’t want to do it alone.

I’m still a bit of a rebel, but my creativity functions best in a collaborative environment—when I have someone to hop that metaphorical fence with me.

And as much as I enjoy the challenge of balancing multiple clients, my creative process needs the fenced-in constraints of an in-house role.

I know my timing couldn't be much worse, but I had my first daughter while unemployed during the pandemic (and she's amazing) and my second daughter shortly after my second layoff. Which is to say, timing isn’t as important as living with passion and being present.

Do you need a creative storyteller? A collaborative creator? A partner in crime?

I’m not scared to get grass stains on my Levi’s.

Does all journalism have to be written through an SEO lense nowadays to be worthwhile?

Is there any romance left for the written word? Or is everything a funnel, lead, ranking?

Where can I read a good opinion or hit piece without feeling like it’s just funneling me?

Are you writing with hidden biases?

Nobody has to fit your view. Not your friends, not your family, and least of all strangers. 

Those biases are the silver bullet for even the strongest creatives howling under a full moon. 

The easiest way to ditch them: stop writing for you. 

Start writing for them.
