How I went from selling jeans to breaking into tech:

(and it only took me 3 months)

It's 2016 and I just graduated from college. 

My first job was working retail at a menswear store in San Francisco.

I loved the apparel industry.
And that's where I wanted to be. 

Then one day I felt like I got smacked in the face. 

I was commuting two hours each way, making no money, and hated my job.

"What am I doing with my life?", I asked myself.

I rode the train with young professionals who looked, talked, and recently graduated just like me.

They were beaming with life.

But I dreaded waking up for work every day.

The worst part was they all got off at the same stop.

"Where do they all work?"

It was downtown San Francisco and they were all going to work at the tech offices you dream about.

Somehow I missed the memo. 

That's when I knew I needed to get out of retail.

And 3 months later...
I landed my first role in tech as an SDR. 

The trajectory of my life changed forever. 

I still commuted on the train like everyone else.

But it felt different now. 

I got off the same train stop with the rest of the 21-year-olds feeling proud.

1. "I'll be stuck in this role forever."
   
Solution: I stopped complaining and got curious about what my future career could look like. 

2. "No one will ever hire me again."

Solution: I turned my curiosity into action and landed new roles at the world's fastest-growing startups.

3. "They'll realize I'm incompetent."

Solution: I accepted that nobody has it all figured out. I focused on learning and stacking new skills. 

4. "I'm falling behind everyone else.

Solution: I realized that I'm running my own race at my own pace. Your career is a long journey to enjoy. 

5. "If this doesn't work then I failed." 

Solution: I learned that failure means I'm growing. Embrace the challenges and seek them out.

In 2019, I dreamed of moving from CS to Sales Ops.

But there was a huge problem.

I had zero Sales Ops experience. 

So I obsessed with finding learning opportunities in my role that could build my case. 

And one fell right into my lap.

We just launched Salesforce CPQ and our Customer Success team felt anxious learning it. 

Light bulbs go off in my head. 

This was my chance to prove myself. 

I obsessed over:

-Recording training videos
-Creating documentation
-Helping other CSMs

And became the internal expert for CPQ.

This experience showed me I could show initiative and upskill myself to a new career path. 

It was empowering. 

And our leadership team saw my value. 

8 months later I pivoted to a Sales Ops role. 

Mission accomplished. 

Lesson: Don't let your current role stop you from finding opportunities to make an impact.

5 Lessons from working at the fastest-growing startup in history:

1. See Something, Say Something.

There are a ton of things that can break internally with how fast Wiz is growing. So I made it my mission always to stop, share, and solve an issue if I see it. 

2. Represent For Your Team.

Our RevOps org holds ourselves to a gold standard and I make sure every interaction I have with any cross-functional team is a positive one.  

3. No Band-Aids.

Every solution I have is built for scale because I know how badly the problem will compound in the future. Band-Aids aren't a long-term solution. 

4. When in Doubt, Talk it Out. 

Every day I'm moving at a million miles per hour and I always have a ton of questions. The best part about Wiz is that everyone is willing to answer them. 

5. The More Complex, The More Fun.   

You would think working at a hypergrowth company is all business. But the problems we are solving at Wiz makes me feel like a kid at Legoland. Endless fun.

My 3-step framework to ace every interview question.

(reduce your interview anxiety for good)

Step 1.) The "What"

-What did you work on?
-What project did you have?
-What problem were you facing?

Step 2.) The "How"

-How did you find an answer?
-How were others involved in this?
-How did you decide what tools to use?

Step 3.) The "ROI"

-Why was this an impact?
-Why did your solution work?
-Why will this new process scale?

Here's an example...

Question: "How did your SDR role help with RevOps?"

Answer: "My time as an SDR...

↳(What) Helped me understand how inefficient
↳(How) SFDC was so I created a new process
↳(ROI) that decreased our speed to lead by 3 mins. 

Super precise.

And always concise. 

This 3-step framework helped me get rid of my interview butterflies for good.

The brutal truth I discovered chasing my "perfect" role:

So I was sold early in my 20s that I should find that "perfect" role which would be the ultimate career win.

It'll be...

-Financially rewarding.
-Emotionally fulfilling 
-Mentally engaging.

Throw in a perfect work-life balance, a ton of equity, and a manager who invests in your career growth.

You're in right?

Of course. 

Everyone would be an instant "Yes!".

But here comes the truth no one wants to share.

That "perfect role" doesn't exist. 

You'll never have a role that checks all the boxes. 

I tried chasing that "perfect" role early in my career.

And I sacrificed my...

-Mental well-being
-Time to decompress
-Personal relationships

All for it to lead to nowhere.

Later in my career, I realized that chasing the "perfect role" was a bad addiction that I was able to learn from. 

So here's my lesson for you:

Every role has some good and some bad parts.

Focus on what works best for you at this stage in life.

Because "perfect" roles don't exist.
