I was 19 when I started my first business.
 
I made a significant mistake in my greeting cards venture. 

You probably want to avoid this mistake, as it can leave any business in ruins.

I discounted prices for friends and family, which also extended to friends of friends automatically.

Back then, I didn't fully understand the power of social media, so I missed out on leveraging valuable data for further expansion. 

Instead, I relied solely on discounting, referrals, and word-of-mouth marketing. 

While effective for initial sales and building momentum, in the long run, businesses need to diversify their marketing channels and utilize data for better decision-making. 

Today, I heavily rely on data from Google Analytics 4.

Last week, I received a lead requesting a GA4 audit, and here's what concerned him most as an ecommerce store owner:

I had shiny object syndrome as a kid!

At fairs or exhibitions, I'd spot

(just like I already had at home)

and what not!
things a 5-year-old didn't need. 
But coming back empty-handed left me sullen.

This connects to emerging businesses online. 

In the eagerness to be discovered
they jump on any and every bandwagon
wasting resources chasing opportunities.

PS: What did I miss?


Client: We have switched providers four times due to communication issues and unactionable suggestions.

Me: I’ll put my best foot forward and make sure to maintain transparency. 

(Consistently delivers work with 100% accuracy)

(Dedicates 5 hours to meetings)

Upon reflection:

The client appears to have trust issues.
They may have unrealistic expectations regarding free services.
They seem hesitant to accept suggestions they don't fully understand.

Most concerning is their focus on self-optimization rather than meeting their audience's needs.

In my experience, success typically requires diligent effort rather than relying solely on luck.

Here's why your customers left!

What may work for them might never work for you. 
Here's why:

Picture this scenario of a local cottage cheese brand that tried to upsell by bundling products. 

They provided bundled products like curd and masala sachets with their cottage cheese.

But then, they suddenly stopped that offering. Now, think of a reputed brand such as Apple; they have stopped giving chargers, adapters, and any other accessories.

While both of these have a key similarity of cost-cutting, 

blindly following trends backfired for the local brand.

Three reasons for this:

1. Transparency: Apple was transparent about the move, while the local brand wasn't, leading to customer dissatisfaction.

 
2. Value Perception: Apple's core product (iPhone) remains functionally unaffected. The local brand now gives less for the same price, resulting in lower perceived value.

 
3. Codependency: Apple's move is strategic, as they know that people will have to buy the charger and adapter separately, while the bundled products were just extras. 
Therefore, no upsell is expected here.

Ask yourself these 5 questions:

Do you manage or exceed expectations?
Is there constant back-and-forth about scope?
Do deadlines constantly shift and seem unrealistic?
Are clients micromanaging, hindering your process?
Is communication unclear, leading to misinterpretations?

If you've answered "YES" to any of the above, then there's something you need to do about it.

I lost a client this week, but guess what? I was happy about it. Why? 

Because the client was:

Insecure: 
They couldn't entrust the job to my team's expertise.

Unclear: 
Their expectations were a moving target, making success impossible.

We could have never satisfied the client.

This type of client dynamic can become a black hole, sucking the energy and focus from your entire organization.

I've seen it happen: one demanding client takes center stage, and everyone bends over backward to satisfy them, pushing other priorities aside.

But that's not how we build sustainable success.

So, I let them go. And I don't regret that decision by any means.
