Serotonin might not be the endogenous ligand for 5HT2a receptors in the cortex. However, DMT is a greasy molecule which activates the internal membrane such as the Golgi body at the 5HT2a receptors. On the other hand, Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is polar. Therefore, it is water soluble, and it dissolves in water easily. As a result, it only reaches the surface of cell membrane. SSRIs increase serotonin in the synaptic cleft by blocking protein transporters. As a result, a flood of serotonin is released which binds to receptors. There are many unwanted side effects that can occur when one is consuming SSRIs. For instance, sexual dysfunction, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting can result to being on SSRI medication. Hallucinogenic and non-hallucinogenic psychoplastogens trigger neuronal growth in specific regions of the brain such as the prefrontal cortex.
