I've been a data scientist since finishing my MS in Applied Statistics in 2010. It all started with building neural nets and ARIMAs in the utility industry, then I moved to building models for winback campaigns in healthcare, but the majority of my data wrangling, model building, and hypothesis testing has been in marketing analytics in e-commerce.

I’d say that the 4 years I spent heavily hypothesis testing UI, product and marketing changes was probably my favorite.  Consumer behavior is fascinating.  The most important thing I learned is that customers sometimes do things that make no sense, so don’t make assumptions, use data.

More recently I've ventured into working with image and text data.  I built a school bus detector using YOLOv8, and I'm currently building an LLM-powered app for a healthcare use case.

I post blog articles about machine learning projects I complete for work, how to create effective data presentations, data science trends, and about products I believe would help my audience of data professionals and decision makers.

The most important thing I have learned throughout my 12 years of experience as an analytics professional is that customers sometimes do things that make no sense, so don’t make assumptions, use data. Consumer behavior is fascinating.  

Everyone loves to wear their modeling projects like a badge of honor, I’m certainly no different.  Most of my modeling projects have been in e-commerce, while working for companies whose products supported SMBs.  Things like cluster analysis, retention modeling, and I’m most proud of an off-label use case of the TBATS algorithm to determine customers with a seasonal usage pattern, so that we wouldn’t assume the customer’s quiet season was a retention risk.  The first 2 years of my career, as a wee data scientist, I built 100’s of econometric ARIMA models and neural net models in the Utility industry for electric and gas load forecasting.  

Passions include diversity in data and bridging the communication gap between data scientists and the business.

This holiday season, I've given myself the gift of being less busy. I've said "no" to additional contracts. I'm rocking the Mavens of Data Podcast, and I have one additional contract. That's it. Life feels so manageable. If you see me a little less, it's because I plan on keeping things simple until the New Year.

My kids still believe in the magic of the season 🎅, and this year I'm going to enjoy delivering it. The Secret Santa gift exchange, the sock swap, getting gifts for family, and making something cute to bring to get togethers, rather than stopping by the grocery store for something prepackaged on the way.

This year, when something is added to my to-do list, it's going to be a fun opportunity to celebrate the season, not a reason to stress. 

Wishing everyone extra yummy treats and healthy boundaries this year.

At the moment, I believe (to quote myself from the pdf) "The next five years will reward companies that align data with the business, prioritize
ruthlessly, and respect the complexity and craft of software.

Everyone else will drown in proof-of-concepts and abandoned projects.

Teams that enforce testing, observability, governance, smart prioritization, a customer-centric focus, and don’t try to replace senior talent with AI will have something to show for their efforts. 

The next five years won’t punish data science, they’ll punish indiscipline."

Presentation pet peeves.  I'll go first.

In 2026, I hope that I don't see a single chart that tries to depict two different types of information on a single chart.  You know the charts. The y-axis will be something like "sales", but then there will be some additional axis on the right side of the graph, with a different scale. Often, they're trying to smoosh a bar chart and a line chart on the same graph, and I am not a fan.

In a world where we talk about simplicity, the intentional use of color, and making charts intuitive..  for some reason this one slips through as a novel use of space, or something.

My other pet peeves are obviously:
 - putting p-values, correlations, etc., on slides for a non-technical audience.
  - not aggregating information so that I have to hunt and peck across multiple slides to understand the big picture.

If you could survive all of 2026 without seeing one presentation misstep, what would you want it to be?
