My first experience of it was many years ago – when I was appointed to a GM role - and tasked to turn-around a habitually loss-making business. I did all the usual things to improve performance – and they helped – a bit. But it was still returning losses each month. Only when I delved back into my Management Accounting background and used a technique from that - did things really improve. (I’m an FCMA with an MSc in Business Improvement - in addition to being an experienced Business Manager) That was 30+ years ago, now - and I’ve learned a lot since then. I’ve learned turning-around a loss-making business is no ‘one-simple-trick’ solution. But there is a process - and there is a toolkit. And for the last 15 years – I’ve been helping businesses follow that process and use that toolkit. The process has three distinct stages – each with a clearly defined objective. How long each stage takes - depends upon the size of the business and nature of the problem. (But no stage should take more than 90-days) When a business asks me to help... I explain and asynchronously coach someone within that business to follow the process and use the tools and techniques I recommend. Usually (but not always) that person is the business’s FD, Finance Manager, Management Accountant or similar. But it doesn’t have to be a ‘Finance’ person. The process works. But its ‘success’ and the business’s profit improvement depends upon its Management ACTING on what is discovered.
