11 years ago, it was exactly today that I arrived in Estonia. 

It was a cold and rainy day and I remember my first ever picture in Estonia was of the bus schedule. 

Since then I have had the experience of my life. I have been through ups and downs, I have been through heartbreaks, layoffs and met some amazing people. I learned to work, run a business and most importantly understood things about myself I would have never anywhere else.  

But my biggest achievement is becoming the face of Estonia online. 

6 years ago, I started creating content around my life and that turned into the most recognized and trusted place online about life in Estonia. I didn't know anything about content creation, I learned everything myself but even more importantly, all of that was done without any government support or sponsorship.

I am certain to this day, there is no other online resource, whether free or paid that talks about life in Estonia in such detail. (I have a 3 video series just on *renting* apartments in Estonia).

Thanks to everyone whose words of encouragement kept me going. Lets what the next 10 years bring.

How does it feel travelling on a powerful versus weak passport?

I can tell you that it feels like nothing else.

I recently travelled abroad with my brother. When I reached immigration it took less than a minute with my EU passport, the officer didn't even ask me anything. He yawned, and scanned through my passport and stamped it right away with a 30 day visa on arrival.

My brother on the other hand, with a weaker Pakistani passport, had to apply for a visa first, (which he got 3 days before his flight), but despite having a valid visa, valid funds, valid accommodation, was interrogated for 15 minutes.

What is your purpose? What are you doing? Where will you stay? When do you go back?

Imagine going through a 8 hour flight and facing such scrutiny despite having gone through the tedious process of getting a visa.

And knowing fully well that if the immigration officer doesn't like you, they can very well deport you.

The anxiety is nerve wracking.

Now I used to be the same, so much so that I preferred not to travel unless I had some really urgent need. It is only when I got my EU passport that I realised how much of a difference it can be.

The difference between a powerful and weak passport is so huge it is not even in the same league. It is like going from a bicycle to a car.
​
No more visa applications with absurd visa fees, No more documents proving your character, No more documents proof of funds, and tickets and bookings.
Imagine that all of that time and effort and money that you spend is not just needed anymore.

You can take your passport, buy a ticket and then just leave.
​
But the most important aspect of that is not just the visa, it is the anxiety. Because I don't have the same anxiety anymore. The anxiety when you get when you show your weaker passport. 

Even if you are the most upstanding, most law abiding, most professional person in the world. The color of your passport is how everyone sees you at first.

You are suspicious, you are a flight risk, you are a serious liability.

And if you change your passport. EVERYTHING else being same. The world looks at you completely differently.

This isn't right. This is VERY wrong, it is a form of a neo-colonialism because it is nobody's fault if they are born in a developing country. But as much as I hate it, this is the world that we live in and 11 years ago I decided that I will not let my passport dictate my future.

So yeah, it took me 10 years, I paid a heavy price for it but I finally got there.

So what can you do?

The best way to move is still getting a job abroad and LinkedIn is the best platform to find one.

So yeah you are in the right place, just make sure you start and make your presence known.

For the last few years I have been helping professionals with their LinkedIn profiles and content creation.

One of my first viral video was about cost of living in Estonia.

Back before COVID, I went to grocery stores in both Sweden and Estonia and compared the cost of similar items. And I was shocked to see that in some cases same items were more expensive in Estonia.

At that time there was a lot of criticism, but a couple of years later the reality has sunk in that Estonia is definitely not a cheap country. People used to come from Finland to do groceries here and now it is the opposite. Estonians are going to Finland for groceries (as told by first hand accounts).

It is no wonder that almost 98000 people signed the petition to lower VAT on food items from 24% to 10%. 

So what can you do? 

What I did was to start working on more streams of income and not just rely on my salary.

Should you move to Estonia?

If you are a tech worker, then definitly yes.

If I divide the ad revenue for all the 400 videos I have created vs. the number of hours put in..

Guess how much do I earn per hour?

It is less than 15 cents/hr.

It makes no business sense. 

But it makes perfect sense when you realise you can dominate a niche and built a trust capital that can outlast any trend. Because every business is built on a foundation of trust.

Once you establish trust then business will follow. This is the slow road, very long and very isolating. But it is well worth it. 

So how to establish trust through content:

1. Keep Consistent: Keep showing up and add value to one specific target person.
2. Keep getting better: whether it is quality of idea, or quality of packaging, just be 1% better than the last time.

These are the only two rules that have ever worked for me.

After working with over 200 professionals on LinkedIn, here’s the biggest mistake I see in their headlines:

Trying to sound smart.

Smart-sounding headlines usually confuse more than they impress.

You’ll see things like:
"Empowering transformation through innovation."
"Bridging gaps between people and possibilities."
"Crafting stories that move hearts and markets."

But what do you actually do?

Here’s what simple, specific and authoritative looks like:

"UX Designer with 10 years in fintech | Helped reduce churn by 30% at 3 startups."

"HR Consultant with 7 years in tech | Built performance systems used by 500+ remote employees."

Or to take even more concrete example, my friend Alejandro has this very simple and specific headline:

I teach scaffold design in simple language | CEng MICE

It shows what you do, who you are and also your authority.

He isn't wrong.

LinkedIn can be very cringe.

Look at the feed, a couple of years ago it was filled with people promoting hook templates, then AI came and those same people swapped templates with prompt generation and now the same people are promoting automation hacks. 

But the good news is that the cringe is only a miniscule part of LinkedIn. The reason why we see on our homepages so often is because the algorithm actively promotes it. So I don't blame the creators for riding the wave. More power to you.

LinkedIn is so big, so vast and so diverse that you can find a community of people that are interested in whatever you want to share. True, the algorithm won't promote it and you won't be able to find it so easy, and also you will not have hundreds or thousands of impressions. But whatever you are looking for, you can create a small, mini community around it. You will meet professionals, you will never have met otherwise.

It will be a long and hard journey, but it is definitely worth it. Because I have seen with my own eyes.

So yeah, LinkedIn can be cringe, but either you can scoff and dismiss it or you can use it to create a mini community for you among a billion users.
