Have you ever tried to teach a bunch of third graders in a mountainside village while the power is out and while a few of them are trying to put a leash on a beetle? 🪲

No? Well, I'll save you the plane ticket and tell you that it is equal parts thrilling, frustrating, fulfilling, and maddening.  

This experience in rural China helped me discover my resilience, taught me a ton about structural power and poverty dynamics, and gave me an opportunity to perfect my Mandarin (albeit, I do have a very strong farmer's twang). 

In addition, I worked with the local government, school leadership, local teachers, and students to create community-centered social entrepreneurship projects. 

I also raised the average English scores of over 200 elementary students by over 40 percentage points.

I’ve managed my career to get upper-six-figure windfalls and great titles while creating substantial impact. In 5 years, I went from being $50K in debt to having $500K+ in savings - and I contributed to society along the way. 

I believe that having money is the ultimate freedom, and I want you to get your bag *and* build your legacy.

I got rejected from Harvard Business School.
Twice. 😅

At the time, it was brutal.

I’d been communicative about applying, and when two cycles passed with zero interviews, I was embarrassed.

So I stopped trying.

I already had my Master’s from Harvard, and getting my MBA there felt like the “next logical step.”

But now I know it would’ve been the wrong one.

✨ It would’ve distracted me from what truly lights me up (coaching)
✨ It was my ego chasing another shiny title
✨ It would’ve delayed my dream of building my own business

Turns out, rejection was just redirection.

Because without that “no,” I wouldn’t be doing work that feels this aligned or fulfilling.

If you’re facing a setback right now, here’s my best advice:

→ Feel it.
→ Process it.
→ Then reframe it.

You’re more than your rejection, you’re being redirected to something better.

The best interview of her life happened while she was battling imposter syndrome in real time.

A client of ours was recently heading into her final round interview, and it was a BIG one.

We’re talking dream-company-big. 
The kind of role that checks every single box.

And the wild part? It fell into her lap.
A recruiter reached out. Things moved fast.

After her first interview, she told me:
“That was the best interview I’ve ever had.”

And then she added,
“...but I was battling imposter syndrome the whole time.”

That hit me, because that’s what growth feels like sometimes.

If you wait for your performance review to prove yourself, 
you’re already too late.

Most professionals treat the review as the moment their manager decides their next step.

But that decision is usually made months earlier, based on the story your performance told all year.

By the time you sit down for that meeting, the “evidence” is already written.

If you haven’t shown clear growth, impact, or leadership signals by then, no amount of explaining will change the outcome.

That’s why I coach my clients to start their next promotion plan the day after their review.

We build a simple, 4-part system to track and communicate progress:

1️⃣ Clarify the criteria: Ask your manager what “good” looks like at the next level.

2️⃣ Map your proof: Document achievements tied to those criteria each month.

3️⃣ Close skill gaps: Identify 1–2 capabilities that will signal readiness.

4️⃣ Show visible growth: Share wins and learnings before review season hits again.

This turns the process from guessing into guiding, and gives your manager the evidence they need to advocate for you.

Last quarter, one of my clients, a senior engineer, used this exact approach.

She entered her review confident, data-backed, and aligned.

❌ Memorizing your STAR stories like a script.

STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is a framework, not a formula.

When you over-rehearse, you stop listening, and that’s exactly when your answers start sounding robotic instead of real.

Here’s what to do instead:

✅ Know your stories inside out so they feel natural, not memorized.
✅ Focus on your why: why you made that choice, why it mattered, what it taught you.
✅ Stay present and adapt your story based on how the interviewer probes.

Because here’s the truth: Amazon interviewers aren’t testing your ability to perform.

They’re looking for evidence that shows good judgment, ownership, and reflection.

Your best answers won’t sound perfect.

They’ll sound authentic.
