Today I think about it differently:

As a friend, I should be the one supporting your idea the most - not the one asking for a discount.

Starting a business is brutal. You're dealing with cash flow issues, product development, customer complaints, team issues, and a thousand other problems.

The last thing you need is your friends treating your business like a favor factory.

Now I happily pay full price.

Actually, I try to go further than that. When friends launch something, I'm usually one of their first paying customers. I share their stuff. I provide feedback. I connect them with people who might help.

Because that's what real support looks like.

Your friends' businesses aren't your personal discount store.

They're dreams someone is trying to make reality.

Please treat them accordingly.

My goal with this post: At Perspective, we've learned that doing the opposite of "best practices" often works better.

I want to encourage more people to think for themselves and ask what's actually best for them, instead of what the market thinks.

The one sales hack that helped me land clients like Mercedes-Benz, BVG, and Coca-Cola at 22 - I'm sharing it with you!

As a young agency founder, I had three major problems:

- Absolutely zero interest/belief in cold calling
- I had no big network of exciting people
- No budget for online marketing yet

Still, we needed clients and had to find a solution. Out of this need, I created a presentation where I introduced our agency.

But it resembled an Apple keynote more than a boring agency pitch deck, and the focus was on the solution we developed - not the agency itself.

And every time we ran out of projects, I followed the same playbook:

I went through my contact list and met with two entrepreneur friends every day for update lunches in Berlin.

But these weren't "normal" lunch meetings. I turned them into sales events. Even though the person sitting across from me wasn't even our target customer. 😅

So after my lunch partner gave me their update on how things were going at their company, I'd always pull out my iPad and start the "pitch." 

I was so passionate about our agency work, it wasn't salesy at all.

The person opposite me just saw a young guy presenting his solution with incredible passion and that made it authentic.

My CTA was always, "Do you know anyone this might be interesting for?"

The outcome: 2-3 intros to new people (per lunch)!

So if you want to fill your deal pipeline:

1/ Build the world's best presentation that's more like an exciting movie than a boring agency deck

2/ Meet with 5-10 friendly contacts every week.

3/ Pitch like a world champion.

4/ Ask for intros.

5/ Close 😊

What's your No. 1 sales hack?

Starting Perspective wasn't risky.

I grew up in a privileged family. Probably like most people in my bubble.
I had a stable home. I knew I'd always have a roof over my head if things went wrong. A strong support network thanks to family.

So jumping into entrepreneurship wasn't really a risk.

Especially with these 5 steps:

Step 1: Learn a skill
Step 2: Sell that skill as a service
Step 3: Build an agency from it
Step 4: Save your profits
Step 5: Build a (SaaS) product with that money

That's exactly what Marco and I did.

We jumped into the cold water, but there was never a risk I'd end up on the street if it failed.

We had nothing to lose except our agency profits. And making money wasn't the problem with our skills.

I think a lot of people romanticize entrepreneurship as this huge risk. For some people, it genuinely is. But for many of us with privilege and a safety net, it's actually the opposite.

The real risk would have been staying comfortable and never trying.

At Perspective, we talk a lot about taking bold moves. But I want to be honest about the safety net that made those moves possible.

Not everyone has that luxury. And pretending everyone should "just take the leap" ignores that reality.

What's your take on entrepreneurship and risk?

We managed to bootstrap Perspective to 10M+ ARR within 5 years, despite the existence of hundreds of landing page builders before us. So how do you succeed in a red ocean market?

Looking back, I've identified an 8-step playbook with concrete examples that you can replicate 👇

1 - Quality:

I'm sorry to say, but most industries don't prioritize high quality and design. We knew we had to become the "Apple" among landing page and funnel builders.

2 - Customer Success:

Support responses usually take days. From day one, we had live chat support that helped our customers within 10 minutes. Customer success is priority No. 1 (for all teams, all the time).

3 - Narrow your niche:

Most focus on mega markets from the start, aiming to reach everyone and thus no one. From the beginning, we focused in performance marketers and founders, instead of trying to serve everyone.

Over time, we became even more specific, i.e., when we saw many companies using Perspective for recruiting funnels.

4 - Education & Content Marketing:

Most solutions offer only technology without strategies. However, technology is worthless without education.

That's why we produce over new content pieces every month that show you how to use funnels for your business + run weekly live calls.

5 - Innovation:

Many don't dare to think for themselves and just blindly copy. We saw that 90% of funnel traffic comes from smartphones. So we focused on mobile, interactive funnels. A small change with a big impact for our customers.

6 - Brand:

We live in a time when people trust individuals more than brands but very few founders are active as a personal brand. That's why Niels Klement and I share the journey of building Perspective.

7 - Closer to customer:

The purpose of a company is to build good products for customers. Many prefer to build products they find cool themselves, rather than systematically listening to customers.

8 - Community:

A tool should never feel like a single-player tool. There are thousands of people trying to solve the same problem. The solution? Build a community and let your customers learn from each other. 

We have the largest funnel community in the German-speaking world (10,000 members), and the international community just crossed 3,000 members a few weeks ago.

That's about it. Something you would add?

I've never really understood why people say B2B works completely differently from B2C. At the end of the day, we're all humans. Why do we make this distinction?

We're all consumers in our personal lives.

That's why I believe the biggest opportunity for B2B companies is to take inspiration from B2C companies and align their business the same way.

Honestly, Perspective is only as successful today because we handled it exactly like that:

1/ We started early with Facebook performance marketing, even though everyone told us: "Don't do that, it doesn't work for B2B companies."

2/ We built online marketing sales funnels inspired by B2C companies - demo funnels, webinar funnels, etc.

3/ We designed our product as simply as an alarm clock app, so anyone can use it.

4/ You never had to talk to a sales team for our product - you could convince yourself and buy directly.

5/ We recorded YouTube videos as a B2B company from early on.

Plus, right now we’re building out our partnerships with creators (s/o Alex Llull & Leon Wosko).

So here's my take for all B2B companies: Be like B2C companies - it works.

At Perspective, we've seen this play out over and over.

When we act more human, more approachable, more like the consumer brands people love - that's when we connect.

Do you still make the distinction?

It shouldn't be a secret, but every successful company I've seen masters two skills at the highest level:

There's this notion that "if you have a strong product, customers will come automatically."

That doesn't work for startups (99% of the time).

Sorry, but you need to learn sales and marketing too.

The problem: I keep meeting founders who fall in love with only one area. Depending on which, either "product" or "marketing/sales" suffers.

So here's my appeal to product-obsessed founders:

You don't have to do traditional marketing. There's a marketing approach out there that fits you. And you don't have to do what everyone else does.

BUT you MUST do marketing.

And for all the marketing-obsessed founders:

A great product will make good marketing 10x easier. So it's worth focusing on building the best product too.

At Perspective, we've experienced this firsthand. When our product got better, our marketing became more effective. When our marketing improved, it helped us understand what product features actually mattered.

They feed each other.

I believe both sides need each other, even if one feels more natural to you.

Are you team product or team marketing/sales?

I truly believe the best product wins.

But here's what I've learned "best product" actually means:

- The best brand
- The best solution
- The best support
- The best partners
- The best content
- The most trust
- The best communication
- The best sales processes

It's not just about features or code.

We've experienced this firsthand.

You can have the most technically brilliant software, but if your onboarding sucks, you lose. You can solve the right problem, but if people don't trust your brand, they won't even try it.

The "product" is everything your customer experiences.

From the moment they hear about you to the moment they get their first result.

That's why we spend so much time on things that don't look like "product development" but I believe it's really the biggest lever for scaling your company.

Everything else feels like noise to me.
