Pursuing the concept of “imbedded branding,” I went client-side for the second time in my career at Marketwire, the pioneering wire and social media company. In just four months, we built an in-house creative team and rolled out sexy new branding and materials.

After working on the Great Gulf account at Ariad, I switched sides of the table and joined this groundbreaking international developer, helping to re-brand Great Gulf and usher in a new generation of marketing. Going “client-side” for the first time in my career was a great adventure and helped round out my experience as a marketer.

After running my own agency, I switched gears and joined Ariad as a strategic planner (and occasionally wrote some copy, too). At this progressive agency, I had a chance to help lead the redesign of TD’s retirement site, took on some cool projects with Unilever, did some brand work and made many a new friend.

Common Inc

As fate would have it, I took on the Microsoft account next with my own firm, Common Inc, which I founded in 2007 (years before content marketing became so trendy). In addition to all kinds of content projects for Microsoft, my fellow Commoners and I re-branded the design company Mayhew and IT company TNG.

My long-time mentor and friend Andrew Crighton launched his boutique, iPrimate, in 2001 and I came on board as employee #3. We had a great time working on the Microsoft consumer business, creating Microsoft Home Magazine (Microsoft Canada’s longtime online consumer portal) and did some cool stuff with Bell Sympatico, too.

Operating from a little office in the Beaches, I went freelance in 2000 and worked as a planner and writer with several agencies on a whack of projects. While I wrote corporate sites for clients like Mazda and AstraZeneca, many of my projects were events. And after 9/11 those event projects abruptly disappeared…

The next stop was at Mosaic, where I worked primarily as a strategic planner on the Kraft account and supported multiple Mosaic business units as the agency morphed into a full-fledged integrated shop. Had a chance to work on CIBC, dabbled with Labatt and met another amazing mentor, Cathy Preston.

My first big shop was Communique, which in those years was rocking and rolling with an amazing roster of clients. When Communique became Microsoft Canada’s agency-of-record, I was brought on board to provide creative bench strength and worked on all kinds of experiential, channel and employee communication projects for them.

I was invited into the marketing business during my university years by my first mentor, Michel Neray, who taught me how to write copy and to do strategic planning. We did some really fun work for the software company Alias, a bit of naming for Ontario Hydro and a bunch of other cool stuff. Talk about a lucky break for a 20-year old!
