3-hour Death Valley hike to plot my 11-year-old’s future: Same clarity method I teach senior execs— Because clarity isn’t a flash of genius. It’s a method. One that works at 11 or 101. We hiked from Golden Canyon to Zabriskie Point. 110 degrees. No shade. Just the two of us. And yes, we mapped her future. Step 1: Name your values. Hers? Helping others. Creativity. Step 2: Explore aligned paths. We tested roles: vet, designer, teacher, nurse, store owner. Step 3: Add color. → A vet for farm animals → A nurse in her papa’s hospital → A pet shop that rescues animals Step 4: Rank and reflect. Top pick? Pet rescue + store. Practical. Purposeful. Joyful. Will she pursue it? Who knows. But now she knows how to think clearly about possibility. It reminded me of a client—a powerhouse COO at a high-growth tech startup. In our 2-dad family, I often have to be “mom.” But that’s not the hardest part: Here’s how it started - A lot can happen in 2 years… but becoming a Partner at EY and adopting 3 kids?
