I've gone through well over 500 job applications for go-to market engineering roles and evaluated a little over 50 skill tests.

This is the number one GTMe skill gap and how to solve it. 

List sourcing

List sourcing to me, is the most important skill a GTMe can have and yet its the one lacking time and time again.  

When done well it reduces the amount of list building work necessary to narrow the list and it does the brunt of the labor for the copy. 

As long as you believe the list is the message. 

And I am not talking about anything fancy - even apollo, clay, and sales nav are constant challenges. 

here's how to fix it. 

Talk to the data. 

List building is an iterative process, think of it like a conversation. You'll say something (add a filter) and then you need to listen to the response to figure out what to say next. 

This back and forth is typically informed by prior experience or something you picked up from AI. 

Either way you still need to have the conversation no matter how much of  a head start you may have on it. 

The longer your conversation the more you'll begin to understand each other. 

And when you understand the list fully and feel it has become the message. You've succeeded in list sourcing.

Sell technicians not maintenance men.

b2b orgs with tools that 'do it all' suffer from the 'we do everything' mind virus.

the problem is almost no one calls on the maintenance person to fix their plumbing. they call the plumber.

your job as a sales or marketing leader is to make prospect feel like you're a technician.

all of that comes down to the tangible data that lies beyond Firmographics. (examples to follow)

let's take Clay  as an example since Manav Makhija pushed me to do it.


Clay does a million things, but if they present this way they are only compelling to highly advanced users that understand the processes that enable their desired outcome. the piece it together folks.

instead clays best shot at resonance with broader markets is to embody technicians that certain people need.

1. A) b2b orgs with no public pricing page, sales personnel and over 10000 monthly site visitors and a lead form on their site.

technician offer: picture this: everytime a form is filled your sales team knows whos a priority and who's secret shopping in minutes. No cataloguing just dialing.

what would that do for your quarterly goals?

B) same org sales structure -> swap web visits + lead form for: split testing tons of ads and none older than 2 months 

this signals no winners. but what if the broken part is the speed to lead?

similar message, different pain and outcome. 

"noticed you've been firing out ad tests faster than {insert punchline}. what if the ads aren't broken, the bottom of funnel is? 

Offer = inbounds become qualified contacts in seconds so you can dial and make ad spend profitable

^this is likely even more compelling cause it's associated with an immediate spend that hasn't been going well for a while - which makes the offer a smaller ask and more immediate need.


2. Organizations that are series A or further and over 3 years old with a sales-led motion. 

SL: rotting gold

{FIRST_NAME} have to imagine your CRM is full of thousand of leads that never quite closed. But what happens when you re-engage and they've changed jobs?

We've got a system that will automatically give you their replacement to re-establish the connection to save the gold in your CRM from rotting. (P.S. on average people in {industry} change job every 18 months).


3. Organizations that are actively hunting down someone for a technical role. 

Hey {FIRST_NAME}, you're looking for someone to take care of building internal LLMs for you right? 

Was thinking if you want someone hungry, it might be best to find someone that's constantly grabbing materials for training and is active on Github. 

We've got this system that let's you pull everyone who engages with relevant posts from {highl;y technical ai influencer} and then look at their github activity and reach out. 

Can set it up for you on the house if it helps.

And these are just off the top of my head - 10 mins of thought.

3 bottom of the bell curve things to do when you have a winning cold email campaign that I see 90% of people skip

1. Add more steps - trust me a winning campaign with more steps - continues to cruise. Keep adding them until individual steps are producing sub 5% PR rates. Yes manual math is required. 

2. Immediately scramble to dump as much relevant data into it as possible. 

3. Implement time travel machine - Load up the delorean with as many healthy inboxes as possible + grab SMTP and ram.   

More winning campaign volume in shorter period = revenue time travel.

I stopped treating prompts like commands and started treating them like briefs.

Turns out shouting at AI in all caps doesn't make it smarter. Who knew?

Here's what actually works:

→ Give it context. Don't make the AI guess what you're trying to do. Tell it who it is and what it's helping with.

"You're an outbound strategist. We're writing cold emails for B2B founders trying to book meetings."

→ Be specific about the task. "Write an email" is lazy. "Write a 3-email sequence introducing an AI analytics platform to CTOs at mid-market companies" gives it something to work with.

→ Define your constraints. Under 80 words. No jargon. Conversational, not corporate. Whatever matters to you, say it upfront.

→ Show examples. If you've got emails that worked, throw them in. The AI will pick up on patterns you didn't even realize you had.

Most important → add structure.

I used to do it with [brackets] or with //slashes, but now switched to this format:

<context></context>
<task></task>
<output_specifications></output_specifications>
<examples></examples>

That's it. You're not trying to trick it into brilliance. You're just being clear about what you need.

The outputs got better because the inputs got better. Simple as that.
