I'm an experienced SaaS CTO, working on a 'Fractional' basis, meaning that companies can hire me part-time as their Interim CTO, or as an advisor to the board. 

I work for startups, scaleups, ISVs and other software companies, or consultancies turning into SaaS companies.

My work is transformational: when I leave, a company should be better off in terms of their (tech) strategy and/or operational excellence.

Before becoming a CTO, I have been a solutions and cloud architect. I still code, as an open source contributor, and sometimes for 'my' startups, doing Proof-of-Concepts.

I'm a Web Standards evangelist, and a Social Impact Lover. 

I've seen it all, with more than 30 years of experience in Software Development, and I'm now focusing on Native Cloud as a natural fit for startups and scaleups.

Dear SaaS Community,
Not convinced that 𝗮 𝗖𝗧𝗢 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲?
How many reasons do you need? I’ll give you 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲:

1️⃣ Operational responsibilities conflict with strategic ones. 
And, as it goes, operation will then always win, because of continuous commercial pressure.

So if, as a CTO, you actively work on code, this will inevitably come at the cost of having to neglect strategic responsibilities.

2️⃣ The “flow” most seniors feel when being deep into coding, is counterproductive to strategic thinking.

It absorbs a high percentage of your brain capacity, at the cost of losing track of time and interest in other stuff.

Relationships have stranded because of it 😏.

Good strategic decision making, out-of-the-box thinking, putting things in perspective, these are all things that don’t happen when we’re “in the flow”.

3️⃣ It’s an unhealthy situation to be a C-level leader and a peer to developers at the same time, due to conflicts of interest for instance.

4️⃣ Dotting the i’s is extremely expensive for a CTO to do, the reality being that the last 10% of your software efforts accounts for 90% of development time.

5️⃣ It’s a much more sustainable growth strategy to empower development teams using your own skills and experience, than to keep doing production yourself.

This is part of an article I wrote to demystify the CTO role, a role that has suffered from the Startup World's hijacking of the role name to describe a Startup's Lead Developer.

Although it's perfectly common to call this Lead Dev a CTO, this "Startup CTO" type has tainted the actual role of CTO, and, even if the "Startup CTO" is important in the early stages of a Startup, it's important to keep in mind that an actual CTO is a strategic, business-oriented C-level player, and should be the one bridging the gap between the board and development.
